Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Erin, if you can't cover the ones that are left: science fiction and NPR, let me know if you want to trade out for 6,7 or 10.

i Read a book with green writing on the cover where the title contains the letters A-C-I-D (doesn't need to be in that order)

I sorted my TBR by length and looked through everything up to 350 pages long, and found nothing. So hopefully someone else can cover this!

ii Read a book with a bright/neon green cover (>50%) where the author contains the letters B-U-R-N (doesn't need to be in that order)

I browsed my ENTIRE TBR (over 3k items) and found nothing. One book I thought was possible was nixed over in the the "Does this work?" thread due to it not having enough bright green.

iii Read a book with something nasty on the cover (open to interpretation) and that contains the word LEMON in the text or title

I have something for this, but haven't put it in the spreadsheet yet, because...

iv Read a book with a green item on the cover and that contains the letters A-C-I-D in the author's name (doesn't need to be in that order)

I have something for this (put in spreadsheet as maybe) but it's got an "X" character that I would prefer to save for difficult letters in a future round. So if someone else wants to read for this task, I will just do #iii instead.

SZ1:

I am picking up Recursion from the library on Saturday! I just cannot start it until the BOM discussion in early-Sept (else it might not be considered a "current or prior BOM" lol) so we will need to do SZ2 before SZ1.
If anyone else wants to read this book, I think it can be used for the Sci-Fi countdown task and you'd still get discussion points but I'm not sure, due to the timing (i.e., Is it okay to read a book before the BOM discussion starts, and then still participate?)
And it can certainly be used in Spell-Outs if it fits, in this round or the next. :)
I also very much want to read Breakaway.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments FYI, I went ahead and put one finished word in the main spreadsheet :D

ETA: FYI, the current #1 crater team (Pompeii or Bust) will top out at 40 books/1240 points. They have completed 39/1210 so far.
But I still think Molten Magma Mambas are the team to beat. They will top out higher than that if they finish their 40.

I haven't checked all the others. I need to actually get some RL work done today. ;D

Are you saying you don't want to read it? Like, you might DNF?

message 405: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Oh no I can read it. But if someone happened to finish one that works for it and there's place else to put it, I won't be mad. I'll probably read it tonight.

The green writing, acid on cover one has me stumped so far too. I thought I found one. The lettering looked very green on my library website but very blue on goodreads.

Then I thought I found another one but one of the letters comes from the sub title and I believe they vetoed that.

message 406: by Mary X (last edited Aug 22, 2019 08:03AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I found one! And I own it on Kindle. It's 400 pages but I'll do my best to read it quickly. eta: score, it's on audible escape.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Thanks to the Volconologist thread:

These work for the other 2:

bright green cover with BURN in author's name.

The Cat Who Talked Turkey (Cat Who... #26) by Lilian Jackson Braun

something nasty on cover with lemon in title or test

Vampires in the Lemon Grove by Karen Russell

( I think bats are cute but then I also like spiders and snakes so...,)

I'm interested in both books and have the cat one checked out. But I can't read 3 for this zone. So we'll see who wants/can read which task when we get closer.

I put "Alysa/Mary/?" on the spreadsheet just as a reminder that we both found something. But we'll see what happens.
Esp with my "maybe" on the "green item on cover/ACID in name" book.

Okay, will do. I haven't looked for books yet for next week.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I borrowed Vampires in the Lemon Grove but I can always read it for something else. I have it for 21 days.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments This is my "something nasty". Isn't it disgusting? :D

Sycamore (Sycamore, #1) by Craig A. Falconer

message 414: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'd say yes. It kind of reminds of a painting a fellow student of my daughter's did. It really caught me off guard. I walked into her classroom to help her clear some of her artwork out. Right by the door is this giant painting of a woman's spread legs and vagina with an eyeball right there. Not a baby coming out but a giant eyeball.

OMG, that is worse. So gross.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments My friend did a photography art showing reflecting women. One person did a large photo of a woman naked on a heavy period cycle. She said it wasn't anything she'd want to see again.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Okay, finished another, only one book left to go.

message 420: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments You both saw that part about it having to have lemon in the text or title right?

message 421: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments yup.

message 422: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I swapped a finished N for an unfinished N (between words) and posted another completion to the official spreadsheet.

We have 24 books logged in there now.

message 423: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'll probably have both my outstanding books finished tomorrow. This was one of those weeks at work where I wasn't left alone much.

I saw one of the teams requesting to move up to Crater.

message 424: by Alysa (last edited Aug 22, 2019 01:34PM) (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Yeah, and they are currently right behind us in points! Hopefully they won't have as many in the end because they weren't originally planning to read that much. Or they will get dinged on something.
Although they won't matter if we move to Magma. Heheheh.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments What time do we have to have everything finished?

message 426: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Assuming R1 ends when R2 begins, we have until early Monday morning. Since we are all in EST, that probably means we'll be wrapping whenever the last one of us goes to bed the night before!

This is the R2 start countdown the mods posted:
https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Thanks I was confused on that, worried I'd run out of time.

message 428: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Yeah we are still super ahead of ourselves, hence the question of whether we should move to Magma.

message 429: by Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (last edited Aug 23, 2019 07:38AM) (new)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Do we know how long audiobooks have to be? I know with Wheel it was at least 4 hours but the books also had to be at least 160 pages. Here they can be 100 pages, so wasn't sure. I have an audiobook that fits a task that's a little over 2 hours, but I can't find a count anywhere on audiobook length. Am I missing it somewhere? If it's not mentioned I will ask in the mod thread

It's an Audible Original Production, so there isn't a page count equivalent from another version.

message 430: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments In the rules re Childrens, it says
"you can check if audible has the unabridged version as more than 3 hours"
So I would assume that goes for the length of a non-childrens book/audiobook too, if that's the edition you are shelving. You may want to check w/the Mods though.

FYI about spell-outs for Round 2, I realized I made one (hopefully just one!) math error on one of the words having a higher value than it actually had, so I swapped something else in. We should be good to go. :D

Lastly, has anyone else checked for stuff for Safe Zone Group 2 Task IV (green item on the cover/ A-C-I-D in author name)?
Just in case my book should be saved for a future "X" in spell-outs. I will look for more stuff for that task too, but it's be good just to have a back-up.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments It probably won't work then. I will ask to make sure. It's a little over 2 hours audio. However, since book count is so short (to 100), that could easily be read in under 2 hours so would be nice/fair if it counted IMO.

Right now I'm looking to find a book for my task of bright green color with burn in the author name.

message 432: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I may have found my own back-up for the Green Item on Cover/ACID in name task actually...
Need to see if I can pick it up from library tomorrow.

I'm just rushing around a bit because I fly out of town next Thurs, and come back the following Tues.
So, anything that I don't have in E or can't easily get in E, I need to get print before I leave!

message 433: by Mary X (last edited Aug 23, 2019 09:33AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I accidentally found one for green item on cover and ACID in author name.

I noticed the discs for one of the books I checked out for task 4 and then didn't use. There are green leaves on the cover and the letters ACID are in the author's name.

message 434: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Awesome. So that can be our back-up.
It might make sense for you to read 2 books in that group anyway, since I am reading 2 books in SZGroup 1.

I just finished a book. Our third word for Round 1 is added to the main spreadsheet now :D

message 435: by Mary X (last edited Aug 23, 2019 10:04AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I completely forgot to even look for a zone 1 book.

So that would work. I just won't finish the 2 books I read for zone 2 until zone 1 is done.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I found one that works well for my zone with bright green cover and burn in the author's name. Her last name is Washburn :p

message 437: by Alysa (last edited Aug 23, 2019 11:25AM) (new)

We have to do Zone 2 first, actually, because Recursion won't count as a "Current or Prior NBRC BOM" until 2 Sept. (I will try to plan to finish it that same day, 2 Sept, if that helps, and depending on when Zone 2 is done.)

So if I'm no longer reading for Zone 1, then after the Countdown tasks are complete, I will start reading for Zones 2 and 3 and just not finish anything. Which will actually work out great for me because I won't get as much reading done as usual while I'm out of town over that holiday weekend.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Looks like Alien III is too short (mods answered), so I may go with Flowertown. It's a 10 hour audiobook that is long, but I've been doing a lot of audio-reading over the weekends so can start tomorrow at the latest, tonight at the earliest, while getting stuff done. I needed something that fit Sci-Fi MPG, and was looking specifically for an audio for this because of my weekend plans meaning less physical reading; this way I'll get more done earlier.

You can't start Round 2 books until Monday morning 7am EST!

message 440: by megan (new)

message 441: by Alysa (last edited Aug 23, 2019 10:30AM) (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments We only need 2 (or 3 for Magma), but it doesn't hurt anything if we have 4.
Unless of course someone doesn't actually want to read the book they put in there.

message 442: by megan (new)

megan | 1492 comments Okay. Works for me, unless we think we will run out of BotM to read for the next rounds. But I don’t think that will be a problem.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments But now that you mention Cynthia Eden I might peruse her books. I think I have a couple Kindle Freebies of hers.

That didn't seem like a task that had to be run through tin eye.

eta: I found a couple of Cynthia Eden books with green on them. So I might switch that book out. I'll see what mood I am in on Monday.
