I finished The Old Man and The Sea. I put it into the spreadsheet linked in Message 2. That's the official one, right??
My employer took a long lunch and I was able to finish my book for task 4. Spreadsheets updated. I no longer have to read my book for task 2 by Tuesday. But it's short and I have it on audio from Kindle Unlimited so I'll go ahead and read it. Plus- it's an alien dragon shifter.I'll start it tonight.
I added my current "The Hiding Place' to the empty slot on the spreadsheet that is under 'with at least nine characters (need to have a speaking part, do not need to be main characters)I started today instead of yesterday and have to have finished by tomorrow for book club meeting, so won't take long to read it.

Mary, I reserved that one because I thought it was empty and have to read a book by tomorrow that wasn't on the planned spreadsheet. I didn't reserve it because I thought I would start it over the weekend instead, but ended up getting busy.
If you finish yours first you can knock mine out of there. I'm about halfway done with mine.
We are doing so great so far! Go Krakatoa Go Go! Erin, re your 9+ characters w/speaking parts: I dunno how specific we need to be in our language for "reason it fits" -- Maybe list the characters?
Alysa wrote: "We are doing so great so far! Go Krakatoa Go Go! Erin, re your 9+ characters w/speaking parts: I dunno how specific we need to be in our language for "reason it fits" -- Maybe list the characters?"
I can do that after finishing the book and seeing all the characters.
I know there will be over 9, so will list just in case.
Erin you have 3 other books on there for the top 10. I could cover another task if that book only works for task #2. Otherwise, I'm at a stand still until you guys finish the other books. The one I was going to listen to for task 2 also works for tasks 9 & 7. (I imagine most books work for those)
There was a big book that I really wanted to read during Wheel, but my library hold didn't come in until I'd left for France, and I didn't have enough time to read it when I got back.If only it weren't so damn long. It's an epic fantasy w/well over 9 major speaking characters. Book 3 in a series that I have really enjoyed so far:
I'm trying to avoid chunksters during Lava, for obvious reasons, but since the book will def have to be returned in early-Sept, I may break down and read it anyway at some point. Maybe read it on the plane when I fly to WI for Labor Day Weekend.

We both had two before this.
I will remove my book and you can use it for your task since you have already finished one. I do have to finish this book by tomorrow, so will read it with one that fits this challenge. Sometimes 10 seems like a lot, sometimes it doesn't ;) At least we ran out of task room instead of not filling out the 10 completely.
I don't know what task to start a book for now. My boss is leaving early so I could start an audio this afternoon. After aerobics, I go in the steam room and listen in there for a bit.
Just take the one I had reserved this morning - it makes sense since you are ahead of me by having one book completed already too.
I don't want to see your book get wasted either when I could switch tasks. I was going to put it in for task 9 but now Alyssa says she's reading one for that along with 3 others she's got marked on there. I'm not dying to read this book and could easily read something else.
I guess I misread post 211 because I thought you wanted to use your library book that just popped up for task 9.
How about when I finish my book I'll check in and see if it's not filled? It shouldn't be, but just in case, don't want to leave you hanging without anything to do while I have three unread.
Well I'll read the alien dragon book and it can be put in spot 2, 9 or 7, wherever it's needed most.
I ended up re-subscribing to Audible Escape. I dropped it and my monthly audible credit, in part to cut expenses and in part to catch up on audio books I've paid for already. I got offered Kindle Unlimited free for 3 months. So I go to get the audio version of Dragon's Baby and oops the audio version doesn't come with KU. But Audible Escape is only $6.95/month for KU members. So I'm going to keep both for 3 months. Already knocked a large chunk of it out while experimenting in the kitchen. I had an idea for a baked eggplant dish. Came out ok but needs some tweaking.
Did you do that task a while back (I think it was in Upside Down Summer?) where we had to cook something and post a picture? That was fun. :)One of these days I need to use the free month trials of Audible Escape, and also Scribd. But first I need to make a list of what books available on those things that I would most want to read/listen to, so that I can maximize the trial periods.
I have an audible escape shelf if you want to check it out. I didn’t do the Upside Down challenge but I wish I had.
I am actually contemplating trying my hand at a cooking blog.
I have a Kindle Unlimited shelf. I use Scribd as well. I moved a little over a year ago and went from a community with limited ebooks and audiobooks to one that has a dedicated online/digital librarian. So I’ve rediscovered how wonderful it is to have a community that funds and supports all kinds of arts, including literature.
I finished Task #3 (the trilogy —> longer series one) and put it on the spreadsheet.(The book turned out to have at least 9 speaking characters, too, just in case it needs to be shuffled around between tasks.)
I have an audible subscription right now, won't keep it forever, but having fun with it for the time being. I also subscribe to Kindle Unlimited
Planning ahead...@Megan: Which of your Safe Zone 2 ideas are you most interested in?
Because the one you pick first will determine the one I pick first...
ETA, I think will probably start w/the Devil one when the time comes, if you don’t mind reading for #III instead of #I.
I will let y’all know if I end up DNF’ing it. But on the flip side, if I like it and finish quickly (it’s YA), I can then also read fast for #IV if you or Erin don’t have anything.
Nice. We're already half way through our first 10. I'll be finishing Dragon's Baby today. Works for 2, 7 & 9 but I was planning to put it under task 2.When I finish that should I start something to cover 1, 8, 9 or 10 or is someone already definitely covering those? If not, then I'll just wait until we can start safe zone 2.
So far I only have No Country for Old Men in print which means it will take me a little longer to get through. Ebook version just says "available soon" and I'm hoping that ends up being tomorrow. Much easier to carry my ereader around than a hardcover book. Also I have an old Kindle Touch that will read to me.At least we can start zone 3 books while we're in zone 2. I have a couple of longer library audio books that I can have going for the spell out for when I can't sit and read No Country and I just won't finish any.
Am I the only one thinking there might be teams chatting through secret groups and messages? Also waiting to post finished books?

I would say use it for either #2 or #9, depending on where Erin is in her two current claims. We need to find that out before anyone considers starting anything else for this phase.
Mary, Mary, Just a bit contrary wrote: "Am I the only one thinking there might be teams chatting through secret groups and messages? Also waiting to post finished books?"Waiting to post finished books, absolutely.
As for secret groups and such, I know at least one group us using the Chat feature in their google spreadsheet (they mentioned it in their public thread) but otherwise it’s anyone’s guess.

Double checked some partner libraries and found an available ebook of No Country. Also someone put the audio on Youtube. So should be able to knock that out fairly quick. Tomorrow is a busy day for me and I don't know how much audio/reading time I will get. So if we hit zone 2 tonight or tomorrow, I might not get mine done until Thursday since I can't start it early. With all these partner libraries my system now has, I might drop my out of state cards with Brooklyn and Philadelphia. I'm in MA and we're now connected to the whole state and not just our region. MA is small but we have a lot of small cities all with their own libraries. So now there's 7 regional digital content libraries including the city of Boston.
Have we decided that we are each going to take a task for Group 2? Erin doesn't have anything listed at the moment, but I can take two of them if needed.
megan wrote: "Have we decided that we are each going to take a task for Group 2? Erin doesn't have anything listed at the moment, but I can take two of them if needed."Do you mean the spell it out of Lava that says we are going to skip? That is safezone 2
megan wrote: "Have we decided that we are each going to take a task for Group 2? Erin doesn't have anything listed at the moment, but I can take two of them if needed."See also Message 227 above ;)
And yes, like Megan said, Safe Zone 2 is the cover and text tasks (i, ii, iii, iv). The LAVA spell-out we are skipping is Zone 1.
I was going to cover task ii of zone 2. But I think I have something for everything except i. I don't think I looked for a book for that or I at least didn't mark a title down.Forgot that I had put the discs for No Country on hold at library. Got them at lunch today.
megan wrote: "Have we decided that we are each going to take a task for Group 2? Erin doesn't have anything listed at the moment, but I can take two of them if needed."Sorry was confused. Mary and Alysa both have two books reserved in the second zone, so I thought those spots were taken. I can find a book to work for one of those tasks, I'm pretty flexible.
I just put that I had 2 books I could read for it but if you wait for me to read 2, we'll be in that zone longer. Alysa and Megan also have 2 books each marked in there. It's just showing the possibilities. I kind of figured we'd each pick one task with someone jumping in do a 2nd if needed.
It was like the original idea for the Top 10: last week we put in ideas of what we each have available. Only we're now putting in actual claims. At some point @Message 160something we did talk about doing 1 book each, in an attempt to make the timing line up, but it's not a necessity so long as nobody finishes a Zone 3 book first.
In our category, we only need 2 members minimum, and if we move up to Magma we need 3 members minimum, so either way we are covered.
Based on various messages above, and assuming Megan is okay w/my idea from Message #227, it looks like we have:
Task i: Alysa (back-up is Megan if Alysa's book sucks)
Task ii: Mary
Task iii: Megan (back-up is Mary)
Task iv: I (Alysa) am the only one who put in a possible book. I can read it fast after I finish (or DNF) Task i, but it's totally fine if someone else can cover it faster. I can also read this book for Zone 3, or in another round :D

ETA -- nvrmnd, I don't know your 9 characters.

Nine Characters are:
Annie, Joe, Mrs. Grayson, Harry, Simon, Chris, Stephen, Marie, Gloria
Thank you :0)I have my book club meeting tonight when work finally ends (these two days are dragging sooooo much), but will work on Sharkwater Beach some before and after. It's a small read.
You're also reading the Xmas Murder one, yes? When do you think you'll be done w/with that plus Shark?I'm like 2/3 done with Task #1 and will finish right after work.
