Alysa H. | 3840 comments Ah, okay.

Any idea which you might finish first?
It's just that if someone else can & wants to cram in a short extra book any sooner for either task 8 or task 1, then we'd all be able to start reading for Safe Zones as soon as you finish one of your two books, as opposed to both of your books. Megan, Mary and I will all be done and waiting as of tonight anyway, if we aren't done already (*cough MEGAN cough* ;D)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Following up --
At a glance, the shortest book I would have for Task #1 (debut novel) is about 180p. Unfortunately, I don't think I'd finish it any sooner that tomorrow afternoonish, when Erin expects to be done anyway.

So I dunno about Mary & Megan, but personally I'm out of the running for an extra Top 10 Tasks book.

When I'm done with #10, I'll just spend tonight & tomorrow morning on writing reviews, or maybe start chipping away at that giant pile of magazine and comic books that's been sitting. Or... watch some Orange is the New Black.
LOL, I think I could kinda like this waiting business! :D

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I finished Dragon's Baby. Let me know if you want me to read something for 1, 8 or 10.

I'll be done with #10 in about 1 1/2 hours.

Re #s 1 & 8, see Message 251.
We're waiting on Erin to see which she will finish first and/or whether someone else's possible book is short enough to finish before Erin finishes hers anyway.

message 255: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Task #10 finished. Spreadsheet updated.

message 256: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I have a carnivorous animal book on audio that's only about 6 hrs. I could start it in the morning. But I have a meeting tomorrow evening so I also might be iffy on getting it done. I had a meeting tonight and couldn't have gotten about a hour of one done in the car but I didn't want to waste a book. I won't be in the car alone going to my meeting tomorrow. Although he does like audio books.

message 257: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Erin said she'll be done with both of her books tomorrow afternoonish, so unless someone has something like 100-150 pages that they could bang out tonight, it's probably not worth it.

message 258: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments OK, I say we just let her finish her books then. I mean getting into Zone 2 by tomorrow evening/Thursday morning is pretty darn good in my book. I was hoping we'd hit Zone 3 by this weekend and we're on track to do that.

My guy is more likely to let me play No Country For Old Men in the car tomorrow than the Agatha Raisin book I have for task 8. I'll save that one for the spell out.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Happy Wednesday, fellow Krakatoans!

message 260: by megan (new)

megan | 1492 comments Is there a rule for getting burnt or injured? Or do the chipmunks just spin the wheel and dole out injuries?

message 261: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I've been wondering about that myself. Like what is the countdown thing? At some point will they decide that we should all be through the first 10 tasks and those who aren't will get injured?

As far as injuries, it will probably be something involving weird tasks, like someone must read a book with a gremlin named Leroy before you can continue.

message 262: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Teams Pompeii or Bust and Lava No More are already done with the first section. But they look like the only ones. After those 2 is us with 8 books finished and Great Tetonics with 7.

message 263: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I bet the injuries are just point deductions, or having one of your books removed, and the ability to "regenerate" is weird tasks to earn your points back.

Hopefully not gremlins names Leroy, LOL.

This morning one of those 10-book teams was tied with us for 8, and the other I think had 7. So there’s some good wrap-up happening today. Hopefully Erin will chime in soon with her two books. I am looking forward to entering Safe Zone 2!

message 265: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I wasn't suggesting that were behind or anything. Just updating. I figured we wouldn't get into the safe zone until tonight or tomorrow, possibly Friday if someone had unforeseen issues. Then I figured a couple of days in zone 2. That gives us more than a week to knock out spell out books.

Hahaha! Giving them ideas.

I was curious on the countdown too. I figured the longer it took to finish the lava area, people would start getting singed/injured? Dunno.

message 269: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Go Erin!

No injuries for us, at least in the Countdown Stage.
There's a chart in the spreadsheet, on the right where it says "MOD CHECKS AT END OF ROUND", where some stuff is explained. Not everything, but a good bit.

I will start my Safe Zone Group 2 reading as soon as I leave work. Should be pretty quick because YA PNR.
And I might be leaving work early today! woohoo!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I am hunting for mine right now.

I love when we get to leave work early - thankfully today is going a bit faster for me at work than it did Monday and Tuesday.

BTW, If you don't find anything good for Safe Zone 2 Task #IV, you can also start reading for Zone 3 as long as you don't finish anything. It'd be fun if all 4 of us have a Zone 2 book each, but it's not a big deal if it's causing anybody to stress.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I'm going to work on a semi-sedate, cozy mystery for IV, so it should be fine.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments If we have four read for four tasks, are the points equal to having 3 books/3 tasks read in Zone 2?

message 274: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments No -- we have to complete the entire group (all 4 tasks).
We get either all the points (50x4=200) or none of the points (incomplete group).

It's just that not all 4 of us have to participate in the group, just a minimum of 2 people (crater) or 3 people (magma) reading for all 4 tasks.

Does that make more sense?

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Yes, just making sure I wasn't doing a slot we didn't need at all.

message 276: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I am really curious when the Mods will do the countdown.

I bet there are teams holding back their books out of secrecy, who have finished the first stage but won't enter all their stuff in time because the Mods'll do the countdown when everybody is sleeping due to differing time zones or something. That would suck to be them!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Yes, I think these first two weeks will be telling on more with how the game works/will work in the future. I'm sure they have plans.

message 278: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I will start No Country tonight but unless my guy wants to listen in the car, I won’t get much done until tomorrow.

message 279: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Cool.

The way I see it, we should all assume finishing Zone 2 on, like, Saturday, and plan any Zone 3 “reading-ahead” accordingly.

That way if we finish Zone 2 any earlier, it’ll just be a nice surprise. 🙂

message 280: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Eh, my book is pretty bad, but at least I’m already halfway through it! Goodnight everybody!

message 281: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments It's possible that there is no actual countdown other than getting at least those 10 books done during the round.

message 282: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Mary, Mary, Just a bit contrary wrote: "It's possible that there is no actual countdown other than getting at least those 10 books done during the round."

I suppose so, but only because the Chipmunks like to be tricksy...

message 283: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Score. I get to take a little road trip to pick up some parts we need quickly. It will be about an hour of audio book time.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I finished mine last night because I ended up having extra time where my plans changed and got into the story. Was a cute, easy cozy mystery.

message 285: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I will finish mine tonight.
I started a book for the next safe zone group also. Just couldn't help myself :D

message 286: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I will probably finish early tomorrow. Then I will get a start on a zone 3 book.

message 287: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Done with my red writing/Lava in title book.
It was bad. The first half was kind of guilty-pleasure bad, with a lot of just plain laughable stupidity, but then it got actually bad-bad.
Well at least it's off my TBR!

message 288: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Countdown clock is up. We’re already in Safe Zone so we’re fine, but it’s interesting to note that different categories get different timing.

message 289: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Looks like Megan finished her zone 2 book and I just finished mine. So we're now in zone 3. At this rate we probably will be able to go up to Magma if you guys are willing to pick up my slack that last week.

message 290: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I have an X audio book unless someone else really wants dibs on that letter. I don't want to start it waste an X if we can use it in a later round.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Mary, Mary, Just a bit contrary wrote: "At this rate we probably will be able to go up to Magma if you guys are willing to pick up my slack that last week"

We'll see how the next week goes. If we hit 40 books a decent chunk of time before the end of the Round 1, we'll either pause reading and wait, or we'll ask the Mods to bump us up a level. Either way we have over a week to decide.
We should also try to see if any other teams decide to go up to Magma, since that's who we'd be competing against. I think we'd be in a close race if that happens: Like 2-4 teams just hanging on by a thread trying to out-do each other in the Mid- to High-40s range of book totals! We would have to closely track point totals as well as book# totals, to see how much slack we would need to pick up for Mary by the final week.

Re X audio book, Mary you should go ahead if you want to do yours.
I have a couple of X things that could be used in a later round but I'm not super excited about either one so I am hoping to avoid them ;D

message 292: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments What do you y'all think about maybe not putting our spell-outs in the spreadsheet until we have some finished words?
I mean, just a SMALL bit of secrecy would be okay, for not giving away any big-point word ideas ;D

message 293: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'm good with that. If we hold off on putting them on the main sheet than we can move books around and change words if needed.

message 294: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Yeah, that too! Hopefully we won't need to move stuff around too much though. Our spreadsheet isn't as organized for letter-switcheroos as our Wheel spreadsheet was (dunno about your Wheel team, Mary!) but at least we can try.

message 295: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Our Wheel of Brown captain, Deanna created a Masterpiece of a spreadsheet.

It makes sense to me. It's the last safe zone so our hands aren't as tied for time - my time was mainly worried about looking like we were taking too long to come out of the lava and getting singed feet or whatever.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Sorry I haven't been as talkative as usual, just been having so much going on, but I am checking in with the comments and will be able to start "talking" more :)
