Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion

Team Krakatoa Go Go
LOL, opinions may vary on, like, whether or not a cover model is hot, but better safe than sorry re "word" on the cover counting as hot. I'm going to ask...
Not a bad idea to check. NBRC is the pickiest I have found of the challenge groups on accepting tasks that are related to covers, so I think most long-time members have run into problems with that at least once here.
Some of you know that my first team challenge ever was Cutthroat -- which permanently scarred me into being super careful all the time, and this on TOP of my innate penchant for rule-following. Cutthroat 4 Eva!
I've identified almost 2 dozen eligible books on my TBR that I either own or can easily get, that are only 100-140 pages. Time and luck will tell whether any of them will fit tasks in Round 2, etc., but at least these shorties will be great for plugging into spell-outs.
Now I need to check all my 140-200 page TBRs too...
I didn't participate in that one, looked scary! I have been in many Team Towers and a few Wheels though. I loved Wobbles as well.
Wobble was before my time, but sounds amazing.Cutthroat was rather all-consuming... but exciting! Egde of your seat!
Also, my team won. So there's that.
And we actually played a pretty clean game, all things considered :)
So... there is a 2-word spell-out combination that totals 11 letters and 400 points — which is exactly equivalent to “carnivorous”. Can’t believe I didn’t notice that the other day. D’oh!Should be maybe go for the 2 words instead of the 1 long one, just on the off chance that we cannot finish something?
I'm not sure yet, Alysa. I'm good at strategy if I have done a challenge before, but with new ones I'm not always sure. You can lead the reins for the beginning of this one if you'd like ;) You and Mary are making sense with the theories so far.I'm going to focus on finishing my book club book this weekend (meeting is Tuesday night), leaving me with a fresh start Monday morning for Lava challenges.
This seems to say that, no, we can't use Fire in Title for "something hot on cover":https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
:(
Re changing the spell-out, let's make our way at least a little bit through Top 10 tasks, and Safe Zone 2, and also give people a chance to see what letters they would prefer to read for in Zone 3.
"Carnivorous" has the same amount of letters and points as the other 2-word combo, but different letter options. Some may prove easier/harder to fulfill.
I'll take a look and see if I find anything for that Zone 2 iv task that I can possibly read instead of i, ii or iii. If the timing works right, I could probably do 2 of those that first Friday/Saturday.
I've asked if LAVA coming out of 2 authors would be allowed. The cover only shows the last name once but oops. Removed the book since we are sort of trying to be secretive. But I found a book with LAVA in the author name if 2 authors can be used and it has fire on the cover.
But also wondering if a shirtless man removing a woman's dress on a cover would count as something hot on the cover.
eta: I found a couple of books that work for task iv of zone 2 that have fire on the cover.
So let me know which zone 2 task I should cover. I might even be able to do 2 depending on when we hit that zone. But probably not both in one day. None are over long but I couldn't find really short ones.

If "white lightning" counts, I also found one. It's pretty short.

Ditto for me, really. As of right now we (Alysa and Mary) are the only two who have put in possibilities for Safe Zone 2. So we could possibly take 2 each if Erin and Megan wanna start reading for Zone 3 instead -- but we would both have to finish both of our books prior to them finishing theirs, which could be a problem depending on timing/length.
@Erin and Megan: do you have stuff for Safe Zone 2? The timing might actually work out best if we each take one, or coordinate page counts or something. (Mine average to about 300 pages).
Okay, I need to stop thinking about Lava and go finish my last Wheel book right now. And also eat before I pass out...

I'm sure I could find something to fit the tasks easily enough. About to head out for now but can look later today after Wheel reading or over the weekend.
I picked up the print copy of the book I found for zone 2 task ii. The only zone 2 task I didn't look for is i because Alysa has something. I'm ok with reading 2 books for zone 2, but it might take me a couple of days. It really just depends on what day we hit zone 2. I don't think I have much going on next week that would prevent me from reading/listening a lot after Wed. I normally don't have anything on Wed nights either but I just became our Elk's lodge secretary and now I have a meeting every other Wed.

Its just Spell-It-Out right? Or does each one need to be a specific length? And how many have to be BOMs. I forget what category we are.
No BOMS -- We are skipping Safe Zone 1, at least for this round.Safe Zone 2 is the 4 additional tasks. No specific lengths other than trying to finish together :)

Okay. Group 2. No problem.
@Mary -- any hint as to what book you have for "that is part of what was originally a planned trilogy, but became a longer series (can include .5 books added later)"?I'm just curious, because all of my research on this one had my head spinning. Publicaton history can be so complicated!
I added the names of 2 authors and their series that have trilogy in the name but have more than 4 books in the series to my personal sheet on our planning spreadsheet.
As far as the 1st tasks go, I would really like 4 and either 2 or 9 or 7. (I have a book that works for either). I need to read a child theme book for another team challenge, preferably by Tuesday. I found one a short paranormal romance on kindle unlimited and it works for dual author. I took a quick look at it and there's like 5 characters just talking on the first couple of pages. So pretty sure it will work for 9 too. Turns out it also works for 7. Those are the 2 books I am most likely to finish probably by early Wed barring any unforeseen circumstances.
I can finish 10 and 7 the fastest, concurrently with 2. So why don’t you go ahead and claim 9?Erin only has one claim, but indicated that she could maybe cover another (1).
That leaves only Task 3 open (the planned trilogy one).
I might have just found something short for it, if you can’t do yours for whatever reason, but it’s a Book #2.5 that was technically published before Book #3 so I’m not sure if that counts as “added later”? May need to clarify.
I have a shortish book for most of the others including #3. I figured if we all aim for 2, whomever finishes their 2 first can pick up a 3rd if there’s something still not started or someone is having issues.
Mary, Mary, Just a bit contrary wrote: "I have a shortish book for most of the others including #3. The only reason I “claimed” three (which I will fill in w/book details in a little bit) is because I will actually be starting all 3 of them on Monday. The first is so short that it’ll be done in just a couple of hours, and then the other two I will be reading concurrently and should finish both by Tues night/Wed morning.
After that, I am highly unlikely to have more than 2 books going at any given time, or even claimed at the same time (apart from maybe planning spell-outs).
With 10 top tasks and 4 people, we’re bound to have ever-changing results, in different rounds, as to how many people pick up how many tasks. Especially taking book lengths into account! Anyway, depending on future tasks and lengths, and the fact that we will have a lot less time to pre-plan the subsequent rounds, I am hoping to be a lot more flexible! I don’t wanna be that jerk who never lets anyone else read for the tasks they wanted. ;D
I'm still a little worried about this countdown thing. I mean I hope they realize that most of us have jobs, even us power readers.
Heh, yeah, true. But you and I know from how well we did in Right Side Up Spring, which we each topped out at 20/month all alone — largely by reading shorter books quickly — that this thang is winnable. And this time we’re not alone; we have a good team. We got this. 🙂
Yeah we'll be fine I'm sure. I have to work tomorrow but will get off at 4. I will mainly eye the spreadsheet tomorrow night and Sunday to do more planning. I reserved two of the 10 for sure for now, debut novel and carnivorous. The debut is a re-read of a cozy mystery I loved years back so won't take long.
For the spell it out I will wait and see, can cover any letter fine when we get to that point and pick quickly as needed
I actually put together a spreadsheet this time. I’m usually more relaxed when it comes to book choosing in challenges, but since there are only four of us I wanted to make sure everyone could see what it like normally just be planning in my head. I use my TBR list more as a “hey remember this book exists and you thought you might like to read it someday” sorting by length doesn’t do much for me. It would be fantastic if Amazon had in-depth sort functions for alphabetical order and length.
I organize my reading very differently when I’m not doing a team challenge, for sure. Like, I’ll just try to get through a bunch of NetGalleys, or maybe even *gasp* read whatever I want ;D
When I'm not doing a challenge I usually just see where I am at in series and which of those I either have already or can get at the library. Most of what I read for these team challenges is stuff I wanted to read already. Or stuff that interests me enough to read it for the challenge.
Part of the fun for me is finding books for tasks. But I'm not competitive enough to make myself read awful books or books I absolutely have no interest in reading in order to win. Not that I haven't read some turkeys during these and I apt to stick with a book that I might have otherwise DNF'd.

There were a couple of times during UD Summer & RSU Spring that I read some turds, but rarely turds that I would not have been interested in at least trying anyway. On the flip side, I also read some things that I really enjoyed, but which I would probably never have otherwise encountered if it hadn’t been for tasks.
Everyone ready to start tomorrow morning? I am armed and ready to go with my morning walk. Going to start with my book for task 4 and try to finish it one day.
Also armed and ready! I think I’m going to start with my book for Task 7, because it’s so short. Then once it’s done I will start more or less concurrently on my other 2.In the meantime, I’ve been reading graphic novels and short stories that wouldn’t count anyway. I still need to force myself to write some NetGalley reviews. Plus maybe catch up on a little TV while I fold laundry. I don’t know how to feel about all this “free” time!!! The kid is not here, the Challenge hasn’t started. My partner and I just got back from some grocery-store bonding time and shall have a nice cozy dinner tonight. :)
BTW, I may have found a short (150p) book for Task #3, depending on whether we end up needing it AND depending on the Mods’ answer clarifying whether this particular trilogy/series would count.ETA: Re Task 3, Karen says it counts! So I'll see where things stand after the first day or so. Maybe I can pick up that task depending on what seems practical for the team.
Urgh, I think stopping/starting/shifting things around just when ya think ya have a plan? Is going to be very tricky. But also fun. Because clearly, joining this challenge proves we are all masochists.
And.... okay, so sorry for all the changes on the eve of challenge, but @Mary, if you are still interested in Task 2, I'm gonna go ahead and swap mine out for Task 3.The book I found for the latter (and confirmed w/Mods) is shorter by about 200p. So by doing this, I can def finish all 3 of my new current claims a lot faster.
Mary, Mary, Just a bit contrary wrote: "Everyone ready to start tomorrow morning? I am armed and ready to go with my morning walk. megan wrote: "Word count for this is 25,000, not 30,000?"100 pages, or 25,001+ word count.
Copy-Pasting here from Rules:
BOOK REQUIREMENTS
Books must be 100 pages or more in length. (unless the task states otherwise)
Unless otherwise specified in the task, (some lower point tasks will allow this) the following books can NOT be used:
* Comic / Graphic / Manga
* Cookbooks
* Textbooks
* Travel Guides
* Poetry
* Poems
* Childrens / Middle Grade novels and plays can only be used where you can verify the word count through AR BookFind as 25,001 words or more. If you can't verify it with that site, you can check if audible has the unabridged version as more than 3 hours. If you can't verify either, then you can't use it (unless the specific task says you can)
So are we just updating the main spreadsheet ourselves as we finish books? Do we need to do book links?

Okay. Just wanted to make sure there wasn’t something somewhere else. Cutthroat will forever cause me to doubt.
Mary, Mary, Just a bit contrary wrote: "So are we just updating the main spreadsheet ourselves as we finish books? If there's some reason that we can't, we can ask here in the thread for someone else to help out.
I think book links are optional. (I like to put them in these days, but can only do it from desktop/laptop, not via tablet, so I don't always add them right away.) We just need to remember to put in Word Count etc if a book is listed as Childrens on the MP.

For hot on the cover I think of fire or steamy romance if people or objects, but the title word is something on the cover (fire)
