In the meantime I need to get some sleep and stop refreshing CNN for Democratic debate reactions. Reading shall commence in the morning!
Team Krakatoa Go Go

Yikes!
You have singed hair! Luckily once round 4 begins you have a chance to regenerate some points.
Your hair is singed for using CS Lewis, born in Belfast, as an author NOT born in the USA, Canada or UK.
Belfast is in Northern Ireland, and Northern Ireland is part of the UK
Your total points have been reduced by 10 points

Damn, that is annoying, because we CHECKED that, and Wikipedia says he was born in Ireland. (Not Northern, which did not yet exist at the time!)Erin: do you want to go ahead and dispute that?
I mean, that’s like, my grandfather was born in an area of Europe that was at the time in Austria-Hungary. But now it is part of Poland. He always told people he was born in Austria-Hungary. So if someone said he was born in Poland, should he not have disputed that?
Or, putting another point on it, that’s like saying that someone born in Crimea in 2010 was not born in Ukraine, because Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014, making them “retroactively” born in Russia.
I’m not going down the rabbit hole of historical place-names here; this is all modern history!
Or do we just ask why my BOM DQ regen points are not being counted? I was under the impression, based on the rules, that BOM regen points gained during Round 2 could be paid forward in event of injuries in Round 3. :/
If that is not (or no longer) the case, I do plan to do at least 1 more BOM in Round 4 anyway so it’s not a big deal.
If Erin doesn’t want to dispute the Ireland thing with the Mods (or in the crowd thread?), we should probably just move on. What’s funny is that we have actually moved up 1 spot somehow. I guess due to other teams’ injuries.
We don’t need to read a replacement countdown book, do we?
Well that sucks. But 10 points isn't too bad. If we file an appeal and lose do we get docked more points? If not, then I'd say Erin at least try to appeal it. If that doesn't work, we remind them of Alysa's BOM read and/or do the regen reading.
I don’t think we get docked more points, as this challenge is not quite “Cutthroat” ;DBut I do (obviously) think the injury is disputable in any case.
I mean, it didn’t even occur to any of us to ask in the Does This Work? thread, because when you go to Wikipedia and it says “Ireland” it seems pretty darn clear, amirite?
FYI Ireland in 1890 was part of the UK. Ireland didn't become it's own sovereign state until 1920s.
The Belfast should have been a clue that all was not as stright forward as it seemed.... ;-)

Ah, I see what you are saying! We were going by Wikipedia stating "Northern Ireland was created in 1921." Seeing that, we did not dig deeper.
I guess that was taken to mean that 1921 was when the area was taken under UK control, when actually what happened was that the rest of Ireland seceded from UK control. So Belfast was never not in the UK after 1801. They simply added "northern" to their area name. Just to f#$k with me, I reckon.
*shakes fist at you and your confusing United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland VS United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland nonsense*
Alysa wrote: "Damn, that is annoying, because we CHECKED that, and Wikipedia says he was born in Ireland. (Not Northern, which did not yet exist at the time!)Erin: do you want to go ahead and dispute that?"
Sorry but I thought Northern Ireland was in Ireland and didn't have anything to do with the UK. His source just says Ireland in Goodreads.
His Goodreads Author profile states Belfast, Ireland, but there is not a way for me to know that it's not a city in Ireland. I've never been there and don't know regions outside my own country.
That's definitely tricky. To me there wouldn't be any red flags raised to even check into.
Ah well, at least it's only singed hair I guess.
BTW all, I removed Sorcery of Thorns from my planned Safe Zone books. I need to read it during Round 4 instead so we can get BOM Regeneration Points (since Cat didn't answer that part I guess we can't apply my R2 points to R3 injuries :/) I was going to use it for an N, so @Mary I moved the book you had for an "I" that said it could be used for N, and I added another of my own book for the "I"
We still have an open "Y" but otherwise all the slots are now full again.
The original one that I was going to read for Safe Zone 1, but ended up having to rush through for the other challenge, was really awful. Hoping the next books I pick up are better. *shudders*
Fingers crossed!I started 2 of my safe zone books today already, including of course the one I need to finish first for Zone 1. Both are good so far.
BOMs read in Rounds 1 & 2 counted towards Regen points in R2.
BOMs read in Rounds 3 & 4 count towards Regen points in R4. I'll be reading Sorcery when it starts as BOM to Regen the feet we had scorched this countdown :(

Ah Ireland, f#$king with everyone since forever. Bless it.
And still at it! Backstop is a four letter word for Brexiteers.....

Loving the new avatar, Cat :)

The spreadsheet only has Regen sections for Rounds 2 and 4 though...?
There's no place to enter BOM/Ladder regen during Round 3 (and there wouldn't have been for R1, since y'all did not announce the Regen options until after R1 had ended...)

Ugh.

Agreed. Espeically since the author of the book I read is Spanish. We could have easily switched things around.
So I'm still a little confused about regeneration. If we finish our zones early, can we do regen reading before the next round? Or are we not going to bother over 10 points?
The Regen reading isn't separate from our 40 books. That is, we'd have to use a current BOM as one of our 40 books, not in addition to our 40 books.I was planning to participate in next week's BOM anyway, but seeing as A) I only want to participate in discussion and not write DQs, and B) the spreadsheet really makes it seem like it'd be better to do it during Round 4, I'm pushing that book to Round 4. It will still be eligible for Regen points then, because BOMs stay "current" for one month.
So it's only 10 points, but as I'll be reading the BOM anyway I might as well earn them!
If we get any injuries in Round 4 Countdown, it does look like we'll be able to Regen points during Round 4 safe zones though. So if anyone else wants to plan ahead for that, you would be able to use Sorcery of Thorns, or Recursion (the latter would need to be completed by 2 Oct).
megan wrote: "I have a copy of Recursion I planned on reading some time during the challenge."Cool. With any luck, it will fit somewhere in the Round 4 countdown tasks, or at least within the first Round 4 Safe Zone, so your Discussion posts would make it in by 2 Oct. :D
That book was entertaining but not great, esp if you like sci-fi in general. It was one of those mainstream "sci-fi for people who don't read sci-fi" books.
Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* wrote: "I am almost done with The Flood too, so we are making good progress with the first zone."What do you think of the book so far? I love southern gothic so I really liked it. I am hoping to get my hands on the next part of the series soon.
I am liking it. I always meant to read more of the author since The Elementals. It is a slower start but that doesn't bother me, the characters and back and forth with the mom and Eleanor is interesting.
Eleonore (spelled differently, obvs) is my daughter’s name.If my daughter is secretly a super-powered water creature, that would actually explain a lot.
Anyway, I came home sick this morning. Should get in some good reading, when not sleeping off the ick, but since can’t finish my Zone 2 book yet (I’m about 2/3 done!) I will just read a tiny bit more of it and mainly concentrate on making headway in Zone 3.
Aaaaaaand just slept for like 3 hours. Now I have to go pick up kid from school. So glad that reading thing worked out for me. Well, there’s tonight! 😴
Sickness seems to be going around. And yes, I hope your daughter isn't a water creature, although that may work out depending where you lived. It's been a hectic day at work so I haven't had a chance to get on Goodreads. I'm done with my Zone 2 books.
Looks like I got on the Envy team for Team Towers --- none of you seem to be on my team, though. Is everyone signed up?
I’m on Ira.I don’t know anyone from my team, but that is fine — hopefully they will all
It’s “ee-ra”, wrath. They got a lot of the team names from alternate words:
superbia (pride), avaritia (greed), luxuria (extravagance, later lust), invidia (envy), gula (gluttony), ira (wrath), and acedia (sloth)
@Mary — I just saw you finished out Safe Zone 1. Yay, that meansI can finish Poison’s Kiss today :)
Also, when the Round 4 countdown tasks are released later this week (or during the weekend), you should probably get first choice because you won’t have as much time but need to read at least 1 countdown book... Remind us when you will start to disappear for wedding stuff?
My wedding is October 5th which is a Saturday. So I should be good with getting a couple of countdown books done. But I might not be too helpful on the safe zones. It will really depend on what the criteria are and when we hit them.
In Round 4, it might make the most sense to skip Safe Zone 1, 2, or both, because it takes a little longer to find stuff for those, AND because the waiting for each other to finish zones can really mess with our timing. So since we're no longer going For the Win, but only For the Fun, perhaps [in Round 4!] we should just do the Countdown and then power through Safe Zone 3...
So we are skipping Zone 2? If so I wouldn't need to read the Grilling season right now. Either works for me.
No no, we are talking about planning for Round 4!!Read Grilling Season ASAP, we are still doing all safe zones for the current Round (3)!
;D
ETA: You realize you can start all safe zones at once, right? Just as long as you don't finish them concurrently? I saw you're reading the 2nd Blackwater book -- will it fit anywhere in Zone 3 if you hold off on finishing it? I'm sure the rest of us can move something around if need be. Right now we're missing a "Y" for instance...
@Erin --Actually one of Megan's "O" books (The Husband's Secret) was in the planning spreadsheet twice! So we need an "O" and you can use The Levee!!! Just don't finish it before Safe Zone 2!
I put it in the spreadsheet, provisionally...

I can finish it for Zone 3 if we need it. There is O name for Oscar too

I noticed this after I said something in the post above, naturally, lol
I added a book in for that missing "Y" in Zone 3 just because the blank space was bothering me, lol. The weekend will see whether or not I can actually read it!
I switched out my zone 2 book. I think I might like the Bone Witch better in print. Plus I was looking for an ebook to start last night and saw a non-fiction one with a bottle of poison and skull and crossbones on the cover. I still need 4 non-fiction books for a personal challenges and it's not a long one.I'll try to finish it today. Hopefully I'll be left alone in my office enough to sneak read.
