Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments I'm trying to be more selective with my reading. I only want to read books that I'm most excited about. There's not really a rhyme or reason to how I choose. I just scroll through my GR tbr to choose, or I'll pick one up because someone wants to buddy read.

I read multiple books/ebooks/audiobooks at a time, so if one story grips me more than the other or is more convenient I'll prioritize it, otherwise there isn't any real formula.

QOTD: How many books did you read in January? What was your favorite/least favorite?

message 1854: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments I read 3 books in January. My favorite was definitely Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover. I was very disappointed in The Last House on the Street by Diane Chamberlain.

QOTD: In celebration of Black History Month, what are some of your favorite books that feature Black talent, creators, and voices, that you'd recommend to readers to enjoy this month and all year round?

There are so many on my TBR that I'm very excited to get to, but here are some that I've read and really enjoyed:

All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson. This has recently been banned in 12 states I think, which is crazy to me. It's a great memoir and I highly recommend the audiobook, since the author narrates it. It's a raw, honest, and beautiful memoir that really packs a punch. While this book was hard to read at times, it is a powerful and important story. This one would be great for YA or adult, but it's targeted more for YA.

From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home by Tembi Locke. This was a beautiful story of how life can be unexpected, how to heal from loss, the importance of family, and to fully embrace love and life to its fullest. This one is targeted to adults.

For a YA fantasy, I'd recommend Legendborn by Tracy Deonn. This is a King Arthur reimagining that deals with a unique magic system and secret society.

For a graphic novel, I'd recommend Bingo Love by Tee Franklin. It's a touching story of love, family, and resiliency that spans over 60 years.

For a children's book, I'd recommend Just Like Me by Vanessa Brantley-Newton. The author is super sweet. It's an ode to the girl with scrapes on her knees and flowers in her hair, and every girl in between. It features bright portraits in Vanessa's signature style of vibrant colors and unique patterns and fabrics, this book invites readers to find themselves and each other within its pages. It's a great one for young readers to pick up or have read to them.

QOTD: Many people use reading as a form of escape or as a way to practice self-care. How do you practice self-care?

message 1864: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments I do use reading as a way to relax and practice self-care. I'll also clean, take a warm shower, and relax with my cat (even though he's not nice sometimes). Anything that helps take pressure off future me is also something I consider to be self-care.

QOTD: Today is National Pizza Day, what's your favorite pizza? Is there a book or a movie/tv show that features pizza or makes you want pizza?

message 1871: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments You can't go wrong with a pepperoni pizza.

Anytime I watch the tv show, Friends, I want to order in a pizza. I guess it just gives off those cozy vibes.

message 1872: by Debra Diggs (new)

Debra Diggs | 2445 comments I like sausage pizza and chicken pizza. Nothing in particular makes me want pizza, I just want it all the time. If I did not have to watch my weight, I could live off pizza and Dr. Pepper.

message 1873: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 372 comments I like extra cheese, mushrooms, tomatoes, and banana peppers. Goodfellas is my fave local-ish pizza place. Best pizza movie — Fast Times at Ridgemont High. “Certainly there’s nothing wrong with a little feast on our time.”

QOTD: How many books do you typically have checked out from the library?

message 1875: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 372 comments 4

message 1876: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments I used to check out 40 when I first started working at the library, but I learned, quickly, that it's overwhelming. The most I check out right now is between five and ten. I hardly even make it through that amount anymore.

message 1877: by Debra Diggs (new)

QOTD: What book have you read that has hilarious banter and/or what book have you read that has emotionally ruined you?

message 1888: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments A book that emotionally ruined me was The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi. I don't know how anyone can read that and not feel something.

A book with good banter is The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams. If you don't read romance, then it's probably not for you.

message 1889: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 372 comments The Riyria series by Michael J. Sullivan, the Gentlemen Bastard series by Scott Lynch, and the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher all have good banter. G.A. Aiken’s Dragon Kin series and Shelley Laurenston’s shifter series made me actually LOL.

QOTD: Do you like ambiguous endings in books? Why or why not?

message 1891: by Vivian (new)

Vivian Stevenson (passionatelyperusing) | 2032 comments This is tough because I understand why readers would, just because it helps fuel book discussions. Those books are probably the best ones to read for a book club.

I, personally, don't like ambiguous endings. I don't need a "happy ever after" but I need some form of closure. Unclear endings just aren't it for me.

message 1893: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (estewart399_lcpl) | 601 comments LCPL wrote: "QOTD: Has a book ever scared you or given you nightmares?"

Oh boy. Its been a while ago now, maybe fourth grade, a few girls were passing around and group reading a book called Wait Till Helen Comes, I read it, and it gave me such a scare I never read another ghost story again lol! I actively stay away from horror because I'm a scaredy cat lol

message 1894: by Vivian (new)

Yes. Dracula by Bram Stoker. It has been 20 years, but I still remember seeing Dracula in every shadow. Time for a reread. ....no nightmares.
