I enjoy epic fantasy as a great break to hard sci-fi or military sci-fi in the case of Honorverse series and vice versa. The praise that Janny's books have garnered here perks my interest for sure.
cheers

I am flying to the city September 2nd.
Thanks
Got an email alert for Half-Price Books Labor Day sale, so I hope to find more of the Wars of Light and Shadow as well as a few other things later this week or weekend.

Doctor Who Darksmith legacy series?

I also got a delivery of books from my brother. He brought over some boxes that have been in my parents' garage for about 10 years. One box had the first fantasy books that I read & bought when I started reading it in my early 20s, the Dark Elf Trilogy by R.A. Salvatore, Terry Brooks' Shannara books & some Discworld books. There was also one book I don't remember ever reading or how I ended up with it, Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley. It looks like it was her first novel. I haven't read anything by McKinley yet, any opinions on this one?
My trip to the used book stores yesterday was quite successful. Found one more book in the Wars of Light & Shadow series that we are doing as a group read, a Carol Berg book to fill out a series (Transformation) plus a 4 book series by her, Ysabel, 2 out of 3 books in a John Marco series, several mysteries by Anne Perry and a few political intrigue-thrillers, too.
I also some of my Amazon.com credits and the buy-4-for-the-price-of-3 deal to pick up 8 more books that I didn't find at the stores--the rest of Janny's series, a Julia Gray book (only need to find 1 more to finish out that series), the missing book from the John Marco series, and a combo of 2 of Pratchett's Tiffany Aching books.
Stayed up to enter them in my datatbase and shelve them. Woohoo! (Now I just need to find/make time to READ them!)

Nice, Kathi. I avoid second hand bookstores lately, because I'm already overwhelmed by my TBR pile and I can just never say no if I see a book I like...
Just received an ARC of Disciple of the Dog by R. Scott Bakker. It looks interesting, but I'm not sure if the name of the protagonist ("Disciple") is going to annoy me too much after a few pages...

LOL, that could get annoying all right.

Maybe you can mentally call him "Dis" as you diss his name...

I just received a copy of The Spirit Thief by Rachel Aaron for review - looks like a fun, light fantasy. I am way behind on my reviews...

Blameless by Gail Carriger
Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz
Small Favor by Jim Butcher
The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets by Nancy Springer
The Strange Adventures of Rangergirl by Tim Pratt
The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters, Volume 1 by Gordon Dahlquist
and
Duma Key by Stephen King (though this one is a gift, and not for myself)

The Calculus Diaries"
Thanks for mentioning this. I never heard of it until now and now via kindle I purchased it. and will enjoy it as I am a math teacher.

And here you are

Complete Sherlock Holmes, Volume I
Complete Sherlock Holmes, Volume II
I just received a copy of Burton and Swinburne in the Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack by Mark Hodder for review. It looks really interesting!

What a title.
I know! On the cover it looks more like "The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack", and the rest are the names of the main characters, but that's how it showed up on GoodReads.

Able to pick up some books they have been holding for me for a while
We have
Zero History
Tongues of Serpents: A Novel of Temeraire
Order in Chaos
Just received books two and three in Rachel Aaron's series: The Spirit Eater and The Spirit Rebellion. I enjoyed the first one and am looking forward to these. Also received Stories of Your Life: and Others by Ted Chiang, which will probably be the next book I'll read.
Just got my package from Amazon the other day with Warhost of Vastmark and Fugitive Prince, and had also ordered The Native Star by M.K. Hobson and Personal Demon by Kelley Armstrong (from her Women of the Otherworld series, which I've been reading in bits and pieces over the past few years - sometimes I need a fun, light paranormal romance to throw into the mix of all the serious books!).

I did a search at B&N for Carol Berg's books and was very disgruntled as the results were totally unrelated books on medical gobbledygook so I sent them this email:
I am most disgruntled that when I enter Carol Berg into the search box,
the results are totally unrelated to this fine author. I have to page
through pages of extraneous crappola before I finally reach one of her
very fine books. A book of hers that is out of print is not even listed
- Song of the Beast. I had to buy it from Amazon! This is very
aggravating as I prefer to buy from your company. I hear B&N has
financial difficulties and I very much do not want you to go out of
business. Perhaps one of your technology experts could look into this
matter. Ridiculous.
I'm posting this because -- happily -- they answered me and actually FIXED the problem so that now you can put Carol Berg in the search box and it displays her books! I bought Restoration and Revelation after reading Transformation and haven't been so moved by a series since finishing Wars of Light and Shadow last June.

On the ebook front, I recently bought Masques by Patricia Briggs, Troubled Waters by Sharon Shinn and The Heir of Night by New Zealand author, Helen Lowe.
Last night, my mother and I went to the launch of long time New Zealand author Joy Cowley's memoir, Navigation (which isn't on GoodReads yet). We bought a copy to share and Mum is getting to read it first, but I'm looking forward to my turn.
Goodness knows when I'll get a chance to read all these, but I'm enjoying my new ownership in the mean time.
Just received an advance copy of Songs of Love and Death: All-Original Tales of Star-Crossed Love, yet another excuse for George R.R. Martin to avoid working on A Dance with Dragons anthology of original short stories edited by George R.R. Martin and Gardner R. Dozois. Looks good!

Powell's was my introduction to the wonders of a used book store. My husband & I were on vacation in the Northwest several years ago and we stopped there while in Portland. Hours later we left with a few grocery bags full of books. I found books and whole series by authors who were new to me and whose books I continue to enjoy. It was amazing! (Bought a t-shirt, too, in honor of the visit!)

I picked up a couple of books after reading TOR.COM blog and Jo Walton was raving
Master and Commander
Post Captain
Been meaning to start on these after I saw the movie a while ago.
OMG, Powell's is amazing. My sister lived in Portland for a year and I was able to go spend a little time there (not nearly enough) when I went out to visit her. A bookstore that spans an entire city block (with a whole ROOM dedicated to speculative fiction, not just a few measly shelves)... now that's my idea of heaven :)

I also placed a pre-order for All Clear for the Kindle (I don't have a Kindle, but do have the app on my iPhone). There must be two editions with different geographical rights as they won't sell me the one that was publised a few days ago, but they will let me pre-order one that comes available on 28th October. Very strange.

I picked up CryoBurn. It has a CD-ROM in the back with almost all the Vorkosigan books as ebooks and a collection of essays and speeches by Lois McMaster Bujold. I bought all the Vorkosigan ebooks for our group read last year, but I still get a copy of this book and all the extras so that is very cool.
Second hand I picked up copies of From Black Rooms (I have the first three and have read the first two; this is number 4), Servant of the Empire and Mistress of the Empire (I've read the whole trilogy but only ever had my own copy of the first) and Firebird (in a good-as-new hardcover and for a 2011 reading challenge).
All in all, a very productive visit to the bookshop.

WEAK I tell ya
I picked up the 3rd one in the series

::cackle:: I'm right there with ya, brother. Not about this series, but about buying books. Weak, weak and self indulgent. :)
I'm another book buying addict, but I kinda figure there are WAY worse vices to have, so own it proudly! :)

Ken - they are among my husband's favorites.
If you go into them expecting sharp action and naval heroics, they'll lose you very fast. These stories are ABOUT the foibles and intricacies and ironies present in character relationships - they are people books, and very amusing, but the interactions are subtle and the humor delightful.
MILD HEADS UP, blurb style spoilers:
Look for the reverses and opposites: the naval captain who's a genius at sea, but a complete idiot ashore; and the doctor with his completely hair-raising experiments, who is a nincompoop at sea, but thinks he knows everything...if you get the contrary aspects of the friendships, the books are huge fun.

I scored hardcovers of:
It
Thinner
Barrayar
Eon
The Briar King
My friends and I were torn, we of course want the book sale to do well, but were sad to see two different used book store owners picking up boxes and boxes of books. The library is making money, but we wished that others would have a chance at the books. The sale is in an area where a number of senior citizens live, people who may have trouble getting downtown or to a mall for the Childrens Hospital book sales. This sale is within walking distance of their home, and had hardcovers for no more than a buck or two.
Just my 2 cents about the Master & Commander series--one of my husband's and dad's favorites. In fact, nothing other than the Harry Potter books and Lord of the Rings have ranked as highly with my dad.

Kathi,
I like the mix of new & used at Powells, and of course the huge room dedicated to spec fiction & fantasy. I always go home with some books that have been on my list for a while.

Robert Silverberg was the author of my first SF book at age 10. I then discovered Andre Norton who confirmed my love of SF, introduced me to SF/Fantasy and it's a toss up between Tolkien and Norton for Fantasy - LotR or Witch World... I wonder which I read first. :) Then I became a collector of Andre Norton. I have more of her books than any other author.
