Karen | 32 comments Got Coyote Destiny just released in paperback. I totally love this series and will be sad to see it end with this book.

I can't wait to start it and get back there, but am loath to start it too, cause then it will be the last we hear of Coyote. :-(

Sandra (sleo) | 1141 comments I hadn't heard of that series, so added #1 to my to read list. I got a hard cover copy (used) of King Hereafter after reading it on my Nook and being blown away by it. Got paperback edition of Cagebird. Read Warchild and loved it, so have to read Burndive and Cagebird.

Had gotten Hellburner and Heavy Time from Cherryh's website. She said to read Downbelow Station (Company Wars, #3) first, so I did and loved it.

I hope I'm not repeating myself. I preordered the newest Sookie Stackhouse (a guilty pleasure) Dead Reckoning after reading the first chapter on Harris' website. It was hilarious. The books are nothing like the TV series, BTW. I stopped watching that halfway into the second season.

I got #2 in the House of Niccolo series by Dorothy Dunnett even though I haven't yet read #1. Her books are currently available for Nook, so I wanted to get it while that is true. I waited on the Lowachee series and found Cagebird is no longer available. I like to read them on my Nook, then if I really love them get the hard copies.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) Hi "Sandra aka Sleo", my daughter reads the Sookie Stackhouse books, and ordered me not to. LOL She jokes about them to, but keeps reading them.

I wonder why she told you not to -- there is some SEX! But they're told in first person by Sookie who is entirely lovable and funny.

I just received Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovitch, the second book in his Peter Grant series about a constable in the magical division of London's police force. I'm usually not a big fan of this type of urban fantasy, but really enjoyed the first book Midnight Riot, so I'm looking forward to this second one.

Sandra (sleo) | 1141 comments I went to the mailbox today and found Jacquot and the Waterman, which I'd completely forgotten that I ordered. Bought it on the recommendation from another group. I love well written mysteries almost as much as fantasy and scifi.

Just received a very cool looking book from Cory Doctorow: With A Little Help. It's a short story collection that's being self-published by the author in a style that reminds me of Radiohead's In Rainbows album - there's print-on-demand regular paperbacks (with 4 different covers to choose from), a limited edition hardcover, but also a "name-your-own-price" e-book and e-audio-book option. It's an ongoing work-in-progress - and even includes footnotes that acknowledge readers who have emailed the author to correct typos. I haven't had the chance to read it yet (although from the table of contents, it looks great), but I wanted to highlight it here because it's such a neat concept.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) Got the first of 3 (at least 3 currently) Amazon orders. Blackveil and the audio of Oath of Fealty.

Tonight I acquired a copy of One of Our Thursdays Is Missing and got Jasper Fforde to sign it! Woo!

He is as funny in person as his books. All of you fellow book geeks will LOVE this series if you haven't already read them - first book is The Eyre Affair - Fforde (along with Terry Pratchett) is one of the only authors who makes me laugh out loud on a regular basis when reading his books.

I'm with you... Pratchett and Fforde never fail to make me LOL in reality!

Ruby Hollyberry | 26 comments Went to Borders clearance sale and got The Sword of the Lady: A Novel of the Change, Strength and Honor, Grand Central Arena, and Strange Brew, because I am a sucker for anthologies. They had more anthologies I wanted, including By Blood We Live, Haunted Legends, Best Military Science Fiction of the 20th Century, and a collection of Bolo stories. And they had an assortment of other books I want, although they were going fast. I am not very sad about my local Borders closing because there is another only 15 minutes away, so this is all happytimes for me. 30% off list price!

On a front display there were stacks of that Jasper Fforde book just mentioned and one by Nicholson Baker, whom people were just discussing this week on another board, FYI.

I had the opportunity to peruse the stacks at The Frugal Muse in Madison, WI and came home with a bagful of books. Will enter some titles and authors when I unpack them. Then my friend said the nearby Borders was having a "going out of business" sale with 40-50% off, but I resisted... Of course, I'll be back in Madison next Saturday, so who knows what might happen.

Sandra (sleo) | 1141 comments Yesterday I broke down and bought Silverthorn, and The Book of Jhereg after reading Shel's and Stefan's comments about Steven Brust.

Audible is having a 4.95 sale, so I just got Flashback. I used to read and enjoy Nevada Barr novels, and it was cheap, so... plus, it's narrated by Barbara Rosenblatt. I also got Dragonfly in Amber. I listened to Outlander a few years ago and liked it okay, but that was enough. BUT, for 4.95 I figured, what the hey? I might like it, and I like to have noise going in my ears when I'm driving and walking the dogs. Also got a mystery, The Babes in the Wood by Ruth Rendell, who is mostly always good.

Yay! Can't wait to hear what you think of the Brust when you get to it. The series is just a ton of fun.

I liked Dragonfly in Amber better than Outlander. Haven't gotten to the rest of the series yet, but I plan on it one of these days.

One of these days is right! Talk about brick door stoppers! Well, I hope I also like it better. Re:Brust - I didn't realize I was buying the omnibus when I ordered the book. It sounds good. I love wise cracks and wry humor. And I need something light after all the heavy series I've been reading - Erikson currently. Bathed in blood and guts, :D

message 466: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (ceodraiocht) | 14 comments I put some of these in "what are you reading in March" - have been on a complete purchasing binge this month. Placed a few online orders for hardcopies, picked up some ebooks and after that found out my favored used store in town is going out of business - so added a whole lot more to the mix.
Purchased in March:
New: Tigana,The Wood Wife,Flesh and Spirit,The Bards of Bone Plain,Late Eclipses,Jovah's Angel,The Alleluia Filesand Angel-Seeker

Used -Archangel,Reader and Raelynx,Perdido Street Station, The Left Hand of Darkness,The Graveyard Book,The Thirteenth Tale,The Thirteenth House and A Heroine of the World

Kindle - Grave Peril,Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye,Better Read Than Dead;all 5 of Moning's Fever series, Angelic and Fool Moon

Of these I've finished all of the Kindle, Late Eclipses, Reader and Raelynx, Archangel and am halfway through Tigana. I've reviewed the finished (some were pretty bad, some good).

Awesome! I'll be curious to hear what you think of it. It's a very unconventional series in a lot of ways. I'm hoping it'll become our Beyond Reality series for discussion at some point (which reminds me... we're almost done with the current one, so I guess we should start that process soon...)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Brust's Vlad Taltos series is awesome. I hope you enjoy it Sandra. It's one of my favorites.

Sandra (sleo) | 1141 comments Well you guys are making me even more interested in reading it. I'll have to move it up on my to read list.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) I've read the first, have the rest on my shelf along with hundreds of other "to be read" books.... oh well.

A Heroine of the World is one of my all-time favorites. I read The Bards of Bone Plain at the library recently and it was one of the author's best, I thought. Have every intention of reading Late Eclipses and The Graveyard Book at the first opportunity!

Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "Shopping spree or just a normal weekend? :)"

I was in Madison (WI) for a volunteer training and to attend the rally at the Capitol. I had a couple free hours on Friday evening and went to a used bookstore I discovered last time I was in Madison called The Frugal Muse. So it was a spree...

message 476: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (ceodraiocht) | 14 comments Thanks Ruby - the Tanith Lee was one of the impulse purchases (was thinking I know I've seen her name). I picked that one up the most "blind" - I'll bring in closer to the top of the reading pile. I haven't read any Neil Gaiman but have heard good things about his writing.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) One of my favorite used book stores is in Madison TN, The Book Attic.... Humm, maybe areas named "Madison" have some strange affinity for used book stores????

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) Well, I don't have the funds, (not now at any rate, but I live in hope :))but maybe someone will do a study, go to all the Madisons in (at least) the country and count the used book stores. Maybe there's some cosmic connection.

message 479: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey | 51 comments I bought and read The Dark Griffin, but really not that interested in buying another book in this trilogy. Do you always buy books that make up book 2 and 3 in a trilogy?

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) Not if I don't like the first. I have been guilty of buying an entire trilogy at once and then discovering that I don't like it. (I was "famously" talked into buying the first four books in the Weather Warden series at one time, by an enthusiastic book store employee who had loved them. She kept enthusing "If you liked Dresden you'll love these". I didn't. I through 2 of the 4, wrote the money off and the books went to a used book store unread.) But if I buy the first book in a series and dis like it, I don't follow it up as a rule.

Lord, me, either, Mike! I've made that mistake before, too.

message 482: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey | 51 comments I liked the Dark Griffin, but I looked at book 3 and it looks like it might be a series rather than a trilogy and I am not going to invest in series unless I really love the book. I am waiting for instance to see if my library buys Wise Man's Fear and new Briggs before spending on those volumes.

Ah, I loved those books. Tracato was very intense. I grabbed the book so hard that I accidentally tore the spine - I almost tore the book in half! That never happened to me before.

message 485: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 116 comments as far as buying series all at once, i don't do it. i even have a graduated scale for book formats. i'll usually start with a cheap mass market as the first book, and if i like it and especially if i think i'll re-read the series, i graduate the purchase up to a trade paperback or hardcover.

however this approach makes for some awkward shelving.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) Mark, that happens if you like the paperback...and then snap up a hard cover as soon as it comes out for the next volume. I have the first Dresden books omnibus editions I bought from the Science Fiction Book Club, but since then I've grabbed them as they came out. I've pre-ordered the next one.

Stefan, I read Sashaa while back and just now got around to ordering the next two. As i understand it the fourth is either just out or coming out this year.

Yep, "Haven" (the 4th book) is coming out in the US next month. I have an ARC but haven't been able to get to it yet. After this, Shepherd announced he's going to write another Cassandra Kresnov book, which I'm also looking forward to. I will never understand why this guy isn't more widely read - everything I've read by him is excellent.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) Haven't read those. Maybe I'll consider adding them...it's not like I don't have a huge list to get to anyway. Hopefully I'll get to these two in the next few months.

They're good, intelligent, action-packed SF. Reminded me of Peter F. Hamilton a bit.

By the way, Mike, if you look on the back of Tracato, the quote from the Fantasy Literature review is mine. I was kinda proud - I think it's the first time my review appeared on an actual book (not my name, though - just the site I wrote it for).

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) Post the info on your review here (if you haven't already) then the word will get out. :)

Downtown with my husband after having brunch with friends, we were walking over to our favorite tea shop and passed a Borders going out of business...of course we couldn't resist going in. Picked up Bellwether by Connie Willis and Total Eclipse by Rachel Caine (ninth book of her Weather Wardens series - I haven't loved the latest few installments, but have liked the series enough that at 30% off I'll pick up the next one).

We also got Jim Henson's Labyrinth on DVD :) Yay for Jennifer Connelly in a big poofy dress and David Bowie in reeeeeeeeally tight pants! LOL

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) I just got another part of my Amazon order today (I still have the new Dresden books coming. I placed an order a while back and pre-ordered some books). Got Kings of the North (both print and audio versions) today. I also ran to a Borders that's closing and picked up, Bitterwood,The Conqueror's Shadow,
Corvus and the last in Barb and J.C.Hendee's first Noble Dead series Child of a Dead God. I held back, but they'll have books marked down by 40% next week, so, I'll probably try to get back...if I can sell some blood or something.

Stormlord Rising

On sale at Sourcebooks for 99 cents:
The Kingmaking
Miranda's Big Mistake

Considering I've been rereading Lee and Miller's Liaden series at the moment, don't know when I'll get to them.

message 498: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I walked to a couple of used book stores yesterday. I found a pristine copy of Assassin's Quest! I also picked up a really nice copy of Kushiel's Dart.

A number of people I respect the opinion of have said great things about CJ Cherryh. The store had a slew of her books. I couldn't remember which ones had been recommended, so I chose The Paladin and Faery in Shadow. If people could recommend some favorites, I may go back to pick up more.

There was also an omnibus hardcover of the first two Venus books by Tanith Lee. Faces Under Water and Its sequel. I left it there, but I have also heard good things about Lee. Any suggestions?

I absolutely LOVE Cherryh's Foreigner series, and just finished her newest, Betrayer, which was fabulous. But you have to start with #1, Foreigner. I've also read and loved Downbelow Station (Company Wars, #3). I haven't tried her fantasy yet, but have a couple of the Fortress series on my Nook, waiting.

The Paladin is a standalone and one of the VERY few books about a woman training to be a warrior that actually works - it is a fun book and very well done.
