Rick | 2260 comments Just watched the sequel: The Babysitter: Killer Queens and NOPE. This one is just tedious and flat and stillborn. They basically just tired to recreate all the scenes and sequences that sort of worked from the first film. They earned nothing here. Terrible.
But still better than a Zack Snyder film.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Watching a documentary about Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and I want one of those for Doctor Who.

Probably won't ever get a full immersion theme park, but would settle for a book/comic series about a space port where all races and bits of Who history interact.

message 803: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments A Doctor Who theme park would be awesome.
When I was a kid I used to design theme parks.
I still do. If I won a huge mega lottery I might just end up building one.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Rides would be nice, but all I want is an immersive park , where i can work around, go to the jelly baby emporium, have my picture taken with some ice warriors and explain to my wife why we should avoid the Androgum cafe.

message 805: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments The new Masters of the universe was really good.
Not sure why the internet is so angry...I mean besides it always is.

Oh yes, avoid the Androgum Cafe at all costs! 🙀
And it should have lots of pointless corridors to run up and down in. 😼

Rick | 2260 comments I got picture of me in a Jeffries Tube and in a Borg Regeneration Alcove from the exhibit they had at the Henry Ford Museum a couple years back.

message 808: by Trae (new)

Trae Stratton | 11 comments After all the success Disney and Universal have had turning movies into rides you would think someone has to be at least thinking about an interactive Amusement Park based on Doctor Who. Maybe it’s a licensing issue.

Can't believe I didn't think to make a corridor joke!
I should turn in my geek badge...

Have a great picture of me stepping out of a Tardis from a sci-fi con we went to a couple years ago.

Probably. I know the BBC has some kind of rule about profiting off the properties, but I’m not sure how that all works.

Someone who used to work at the library I work at, had once made a half-size TARDIS out of a big box. I’ve got a picture of me with my backpack on looking surprised and then another of me reaching for the handle. He also made a huge space shuttle that we strapped onto the top of the library van and we all dressed like astronauts for a holiday parade one year.

I’m not collecting, I finished my Geek Scout Badge Sash so long ago I don’t even remember where it is.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I'm tired.
I just want to have something Who related to talk about and all we have is not good news, angry fanboys doing a victory lap because they 'drove away' that icky girl and all the speculation on the next Doctor is going back it him being a him again.

guess I'll just keep my head down and go back to my massive rewatch until the dust clears.

message 817: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments In good news: Brit box is supposed to be getting Blake's 7, so I'll have something to watch when I finish the Prisoner.

message 818: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Getting ready to start the Jon Pertwee episodes with my rewatch. But I decided to take a sidestep detour and rewatch the Christopher Eccleston series before I got on with Pertwee. And NOW I’m thinking I might rewatch the Jodie Whittaker seasons instead of Pertwee. Sigh. Who knows why I keep postponing Pertwee.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Rick wrote: "Getting ready to start the Jon Pertwee episodes with my rewatch. But I decided to take a sidestep detour and rewatch the Christopher Eccleston series before I got on with Pertwee. And NOW I’m think..."

Pertwee is funny. I wouldn't say he's my least favorite, but he did take me awhile to get into.
Probably, he suffered, as he was the second Doctor I ever saw, so lost out compared to Tom Baker.
With my massive rewatch, I feel I finally get and appreciate him, and he has a couple stories that are on my favorite list ( and he has the best Master) and was sad when I finally got to Planet of the Spiders.

message 820: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I do feel that Pertwee’s first year suffers from the usual transitional issues with new Doctor &/or companions and his last year was as big of a burn out for him. So the strongest years for him 2, 3, 4 - the Jo Grant years, interestingly, at least in my opinion. Of course individual stories might be stronger or not, but looking at the whole season I do these were his best years.

message 821: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I think something that helped me with Pertwee was watching his run in order, whereas before I'd just get an episode here or there on PBS.
Seeing it from the beginning, watching it build it's own mythology and all the way through gave me a new appreciation.

If I ever get around to doing Pertwee Who fanfic, I'd like to do one Earthbound story and one from later when he was traveling in the Tardis.

message 822: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I think it’s always better to watch them in order. But then … there are lost episodes for the first and second Doctors, so can anyone really do that anymore.

message 823: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Almost.
They've filled in a lot of holes. Nearly all of Troughton's run has been restored and there's talk of at least one more Hartnell restoration in the works.

message 824: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments How come no one's done a story where the Man from UNCLE meets Steed and Mrs. Peel?
Seems like a natural.

message 825: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments It does. I’d bet it’s out there somewhere. Maybe really awful. But it’s got to be out there somewhere.

Aside from a cameo in one of the UNCLE paperbacks, I cannot find any evidence.

Seems weird, as it's been in my notebook of ideas for decades.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments My wife bought one of those roomba cleaning robot things and now I have to decide if I want to use a Star Wars or a Doctor Who reference when I name it.

Choices, choices.

Rick | 2260 comments Goodreads has decided I’m not worthy enough to be notified when someone comments on a thread I’m following, even though I’ve asked goodreads to do so. Ever since goodreads got purchased by Amazon the “customer service” equals the typical Amazon “customer disservice.” 😾

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I'd notice my notifications had gotten spotty.
I wondered why.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Watching What if, I keep trying to think of Doctor Who versions, and I generally just end up shuffling around the order of the Doctors.

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "Watching What if, I keep trying to think of Doctor Who versions, and I generally just end up shuffling around the order of the Doctors."

Okay, interesting.

Who’s on first? 😹

message 833: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments It's mostly things like:
Different Doctor is exiled to earth ( McCoy is my top pick)

stories that messed with time have a different Doctor arriving there( Blink kicks Tennant's Doctor back to Invasion of the Dinosaurs, Jodi's search for the Tardis accidentally takes her to Foreman's junkyard etc

Regenerations happen in a different story: Invasion of time is Tom's last story and Davidson, K-9 and Rommana search for the key to time, Davidson gives up a regeneration in Mawdryn undead and Colin gets a longer run and gets to meet the Brig, Tennant regenerates to get away from the family of Blood
The War Doctor doesn't regenerate during Day of the Doctor and the first season of new Who is John Hurt and Billy Piper.

and I haven't even touched my What if's involving companions.

message 834: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Those all sound interesting. Rather like the Unbound stories, but still using the usual actors.

message 835: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I love the notion of John Hurt and Billy Piper together. That could have been awesome.

message 836: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments My ideas don't focus on specific events as much as they shuffle characters around.

The other one I like is what if Sara Kingdom and Katrina survived Dalek's masterplan and Steven was the one who died?

message 837: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Big Finish does have some adventures that with Sara Kingdom set before she dies. The events fall between episodes of The Daleks Masterplan

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Rick wrote: "Big Finish does have some adventures that with Sara Kingdom set before she dies. The events fall between episodes of The Daleks Masterplan"

Reading the DMP novelization, I noticed there are some gaps where you could easily fit some First Doctor, Sara and Steven adventures.

message 839: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments And they did. I’ve only just listened to the whole story in the last year. At some point I’ll go back and listen to it with the new adventures inserted where they occur.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Stalled halfway through my Prisoner rewatch, I started watching all the New Red Dwarf series.
It's been a lot of fun, but now all I have left is the grand finale and then it's over!

Want to watch it, but after that, there's no more Red Dwarf...

Rick | 2260 comments I just finished Defending Jacob. Quite dark and quite good.

I did something a little crazy. I rented a movie theater for a screening of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. So this way, myself and 29 others can watch the movie without having to worry about spreading the virus. They’re mostly people I work with and some spouses and a few of their kids. So it’s not like we’re not around each other every day anyway. Sunday afternoon. I am so excited.

Very cool
Always wanted to do that.

Work is crazy for both myself and my wife, so we won't be seeing Shang-Chi un til next weekend.
So, on top of being grumpy, I have to avoid half the internet to avoid spoilers.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Watching Ultra man with my daughter and all the vehicle model work reminds us of Gerry Anderson.
We keep making references to when the Thunderbirds are going to show up.

Rick | 2260 comments As a kid I’d go see films like Towering Inferno and Poseidon Adventure and imagine what the Tracy Boys would be doing to solve the problem while I was watching the movie.

Constantly surprised no one has tried to scoop up the comic rights and create an Anderson-verse.
I know they did a couple things with BF, but in this age where Franchise is king, you'd think all the Anderson stuff would be a hot property.

message 846: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Well, the recent Thunderbirds didn’t get received well (although I rather enjoyed it) and didn’t make much money. So until it can be shown to be profitable properties I don’t think the Anderson stuff will have more than cult following status.

You mean the animated Thunderbirds streaming on amazon?
If so, the animation in the trailer wasn't great.

Bummer.
Where's the JJ Abrams Space: 1999 reboot to make them a hot property?
Why are they the one franchise Disney hasn't tried to buy?

I'm not sure if you mean the 2004 movie (which was definitely not well-received) or the recent rebooted series that did fairly well. I sense, from the way Nick Briggs and Jamie Anderson (Gerry's youngest son from his second marriage) have talked anyway, that the problem has largely been that the rights all belong to other people (primarily ITV) who've shown precious little interest in reviving the properties while wanting to charge a small fortune for anyone to do anything with them. It's why it's taken so long for Big Finish/Anderson Entertainment to get around to doing things with them and why they've largely stuck to pre-existing material they can turn into audiobooks. That includes Stingray: Operation Icecap which I heartily recommend.
