Basically, the guys working on New Trek are proudly announcing that they've invented Farscape.

Even as a comic book, What If? was a weird beast.

I thought it was animated? Farscape is “Muppets in space.” And I say that with both love and admiration for BOTH Farscape and The Muppets, and there was an episode of Farscape that was animated (but that’s besides the point), the whole point of muppets is the puppeteering. If it’s animated, it’s not puppets.

Rick | 2260 comments If you break down sci-fi/fantasy shows to their very basic formula - how many do you come up with?

How much in common does Doctor Who have with Sliders? How similar are Space: 1999 and Star Trek really? If Star Trek is Wagon Train in space and Star Trek Deep Space Nine is Rifleman in space, are these two shows even in the same concept formula family?

Firefly is even more those concepts than ST ever was.

message 906: by Rick (last edited Sep 21, 2021 06:48PM) (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Totally. But the fundamental concept of the original Star Trek was something along the lines of Wagon Train in space. Deep Space Nine was sold as The Rifleman in space. Firefly is actually more of a western in a lot of ways than a sci-fi show. But I’m talking about the fundamental structure of the show, not the trappings of the genre.
Firefly is about a group of people traveling around selling goods from location to location, and being wanted by the authorities.
Farscape is about being in unfamiliar territory and being on the run and hunted by the authorities.
Star Trek TOS is about exploration, but in control of where you go.
Space: 1999 is about looking for a new home (or a way back home) with no control of where you go.
Lost in Space is about looking for a new home with no control of where you go.
Doctor Who is about traveling, not really about exploration, with (depending on which season and Doctor you’re watching) little to some control of where your going.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Well, the trailer for the Foundation was...something.
Without the logo, I couldn't have told you what it was.

I thought it was a trailer for Dune.
Why are there no light bulbs in the future?
When they say the future is dark, they don't mean that literally Hollywood.

message 908: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Hollywood has always had a problem with shining the light on subjects they’re up uncomfortable with.

The lighting in the movie preview is very dark. I think they're trying to invoke the depth and darkness of space.

Dune has it's own light levels.

message 912: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments It's just annoying that so much sci-fi lately looks cookie cutter.

'Things are grim and dark..."

hey, how about if we make that literal, with the lighting...! You know, just in case nobody pays attention to the script and dialogue.

Steve, I see a great future for you in Hollywood!

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments So, I just got twenty bucks in amazon points.

Do I want to buy Fury from the deep or pre-order Evil of the Daleks...?

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Rick wrote: "For what it’s worth, I vote for Fury From the Deep."

I'm leaning that way, becuase if I order it, I can watch it in a couple days.
Evil of the Daleks, I'd have to wait a whole month...who has that kind of patience?

message 921: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments After having to wait a whole year for stuff like Black Widow, Shang-Chi, No Time To Die and Dune - and having to condition myself as a kid to wait for a whole month, month after month, for the next issue of Kamandi or the Fantastic Four - and having to wait for longer and longer periods of time for fewer and fewer episodes of Doctor Who ... yeah, I’m not going to say anything.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I'm not keeping up with much Who news, as it seems a worrying jumble, but I have real mixed feelings on Russell coming back.

Okay, a lot could go wrong. But I’ll worry about that when (if) it happens.

Ben Whishaw as the Doctor = 1-part Peter Capaldi, 1-part Matt Smith, 1-part Paul McGann and 1-part Sylvester McCoy

This is one of my problems, with the changes coming to Who.
We need a 'troughton lady Doctor'.
Otherwise, Jodi becomes a fluke or gimmick, or if you are one of the angry jerks on the internet, a mistake.

Immediately going back to a guy feels like 'Well, we tried that and it didn't work' reset.

So, even an actor I like will get little enthusiasm out of me if they're male.

message 935: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I hear ya. There’s gonna be a lot of that, no matter who they pick. But we gotta remember that chances are pretty darn good that we’ll have another Doctor sooner than we want, no matter who they pick this time.

message 936: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I kinda just love (enjoy would be better, but whatever) this period of limbo when we know we’re getting a new Doctor, but we don’t know who they will be or what their personality will be like. It’s kind of like that period when you’re first making a new D&D character and you have all these cool things you want to do and try and the anticipation just bubbles your imagination into a boil.

They've done a lot of dark, cosmic types.
I'd like to see someone like the Toymaker, that's just messing around for the fun of it.

Rick | 2260 comments Finish Destiny of the Daleks first.

message 943: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Destiniy of the Daleks: Some good moments, but it doesn't't quite pull together.
Man, you can tell they had fifty bucks and whatever costumes and props were in the warehouse to make this one.

Romana #2 is well written. Lalla does a nice job. I love that outfit.

I like the Movelions.
Shame we don't see them again for another thirty years. Lots of potential.

A fun, but flawed romp.

message 944: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Somebody (the comics or BF) need to a collection that's all stories where one time aliens get a second story: The Movelions, Dominators, Nimons, etc.

Be nice if they faced off against a different Doctor, but I'm flexible on that bit

message 945: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I could totally see Big Finish doing this.

message 946: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments City of death: Timey-whimey, and full of wonderfully quotable dialogue.
Just a fun romp.

Shame Dugan never became a companion. Would have loved to have seen him and K-9 interact.

You think the Jagaroth and Clara ever bumped into each other when they were both scattered through time?

message 947: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments City of Death is now the only story arc I don’t own. I’ve not seen it for years.

I’m troubled by Clara, because Moffat created her to totally destroy the Doctor‘s credibility. She now gets credit for retroactively saving the Doctor again and again and again. Suddenly the Doctor had no agency without her.

Yeah, Clara is Moffett's 'magical girl' trope run amok.
She was a cute gimmick at first and then she became this cosmic bit of fanfic.

Totally. The character has really soured me on rewatching those seasons she’s in. Which is sad, but true. I also feel like it was longer than two and half years. But, am I remembering that correctly, she was on just two and half seasons?
