I still say 2021 was a vast improvement over 2020. Even with the January 6th deadly, if short lived, insurrection by that horde of lawless & treasonous US vigilantes recklessly encouraged by that biggest loser of all time.

Such a good movie!
And I'm one of those rare comic geeks that isn't really a Spider-man fan, so it had an uphill battle with me and managed to completely blow me away.

Oh, 2021 was a definite improvement, just for having the guy in charge not trying to actively kill us, but at the same time, it's still been pretty rough.
2020, we were being chased by fire-breathing, ravenous sharks.
2021: the sharks are smaller and only want to nibble on us.

Me too! Not a huge Spider-Man fan and, while I’ve enjoyed the Tom Holland films, he’s better as a team member in the proper MCU films. But this one was … 🤔 … Spectacular! Sensational! And certainly the most Superior of any of the Spider-Man films.

They came out with a set based on the 8th Doctor, including some BF companions.

Figurines based on audio...?
That sound weird to anyone else?

Not sure if I want to shell out 30 bucks.
Wait and see.

Rick | 2260 comments Yeah, there are a couple that are only list3d as Blu-ray, I’d rather wait to see if DVD is coming as well. I’ll get the Complete Season sets on Blu-ray, but the individual stories I’d rather just save the money and get on DVD.

Babble on, maybe I’ll finally get back into Star Wars (JJ Abrams nearly gave the franchise the final death blow from my point of view. Only Rogue One and the Kenobi series have keep any faith in the Force alive for me).

Liked the movies, but the fan backlash put me off, until the Mandalorian came along.

message 1121: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I went into The Force Awakens all hyped because the Star Trek films by JJ Abrams were such awful movies, that completely ignored (actually they took a huge stinking dump on) the basic premise of Gene Roddenberry’s vision, the fundamental concept of Star Trek, and turned them into Star Wars films. So I figured - okay now we get see Abrams playing in the franchise he wanted to be in all along, this will be good. And then, at the end of The Force Awakens, I’m just stunned and flabbergasted that Abrams just made a film-by-the-numbers Star Wars movie. Zero originality. Zero creativity. Zero. Zero. Zero. A big boring piece of CGI ugliness. He sat down and said “I’ve got a checklist of things that HAVE to be in my Star Wars movies” and he ticked off each and every thing on his list, all scenes and sequences that were done in earlier Star Wars films, but forgot to wrap it up with an interesting story and emotionally satisfying journey. Abrams is nothing but a buffed up, overrated talentless hack (IMO).
I didn’t even see Rogue One, The Last Jedi or Solo in the theater because I was so appalled with how bad I felt The Force Awakens was. I eventually saw them all on disc, and enjoyed them all enormously, enough to go back and give The Rise of Skywalker a shot in the theater. Which was even more of a train wreck than The Force Awakens. I sincerely hope that Disney has learned to never, ever allow JJ Abrams anywhere near another franchise EVER again.

message 1122: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Yeah, Abrams Trek is a whole other conversation, which I don't have the energy to list how much he got wrong.

See, Force Awakens was what I wanted that movie to be. Big space opera antics and familiar tropes used to reintroduce us to the next generation of SW heroes, with appearances by the old guys to pass the torch.
My daughter, who was too young to see the prequels, got to see a SW film on the big screen.

This trilogy was supposed to be the end of the old guys stories, and going forward, the new guys would be the focus.

It was what came next, that was where the problems started.
Last Jedi is brilliant, but it freaked fandom out, and Disney panic'd and stumbled all over themselves trying to do damage control, instead of just telling their story.

Solo, which is a good, but not great movie, was collateral damage and then Disney made the huge mistake of having the guy that isn't good at resolutions to fix the problem.
Rise has good moments, but it's a mess.
Abrams/Disney tried to make everybody happy and nobody liked it.
Angry fandom was still mad that they let a girl do stuff, and the rest of us were annoyed because we could see that they'd abandoned whatever plan they'd had in a desperate effort to "fix" things.
Abrams made a sequel to Force, not a sequel to Last Jedi.

Now, Disney is afraid to go forward, all their stuff is set in the past.
There is no post-Rise SW.

Alot of it is good, but SW can't survive on it.
Much as I'm not a fan of Abrams, I can't entirely blame him.
He did what Disney asked, and that was try and cater to the loudest, angriest fans.
fandom helped make this mess.

message 1123: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Disney has to share some blame, for sure, but Abrams has repeatedly made the same kind of mistakes with every project I’ve seen him work on. Not everything he touches is bad, but geez, this guy’s track record is awful. What’s the opposite of a visionary director? Zack Snyder immediately comes to mind. Another person whose offensives just keep piling up and I can’t understand how or why people keep letting him make films.
On the other hand, you’ve got someone like Joss Whedon and his legions devoted followers. I never could understand the interest in Buffy or Angel. I did eventually watch Firefly (That’s a whole different story) and loved it. But, with a couple exceptions, I can’t seem to really enjoy anything he does. The I realized that it wasn’t Whedon’s involvement on Firefly that made it work, it was the synergy of all the creative components that made it work, despite Whedon’s influence. I think this probably the case with the two Avengers films he did as well. So I think Abrams has had some projects like that as well, things worked well out despite his involvement. I think I’ve yet to see something from Snyder that worked despite his involvement.
On yet another hand … there are also directors I’ve become increasingly annoyed with, Quinton Tarantino and David Lynch come to mind, as their more recent films just keep falling increasingly flat.

message 1124: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Like this conversation isn't controversial enough, you had to bring in Zach Snyder...!

Who looked at Watchmen and said "That seems like a guy who gets Superman...?"
The guy who did 300, that's our Kevin Fiege!
Dear lord, did he %$#@ up the DC movie-verse!

Whedon's weird, as I don't love firefly. Great cast, great world building, very quotable, but just enough rape references that I haven't been able to finish it, as I just got uncomfortable.

Generally enjoyed Buffy and Angel.
Loved Avengers.
Shame he turned out to be kind of garbage.

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "Like this conversation isn't controversial enough, you had to bring in Zach Snyder...! ..."

Well, ya know, he is kinda a Nazi place holder of film discussions. 😹

Firefly 🙄 Where do I begin? I tried watching Buffy back-in-the-day while it was originally running. Couldn’t get into it. I hadn’t really enjoyed the original film, but I know that’s not canon anyway, and the new series just seemed to take the aspects of the film I didn’t like and amplify them, while dismissing or diminishing those that I thought were interesting (can’t really go into detail as I haven’t seen that film in … 30 years or so, and I only saw it once). But I’ve tried several times to get aboard the Buffy train and just … couldn’t. One aspect that really grates on me is that the vampires aren’t really vampires, they’re demons, and they just disappear when they’re killed. All too scooby-doo-convenient for me. So when Firefly ran on TV, I just rolled my eyes and ignored it. Then it got cancelled and I never gave it another thought. Some years pass, and a good friend of mine is pissed at his father. Seems his father had asked: what do you want for Xmas. And my friend James replied: the Firefly DVD box set. So, of course, his father bought him a Star Trek tie for Xmas that year. I knew I was never going to hear the end of this for probably months, so I immediately went out and bought him the Firefly DVD box set and gave it to him. He was delighted, still pissed at his father, but happy as a snug wee bitty bug. Then he says to me: since you bought it for me you’ll have to watch it with me. I rolled my eyes. This is how I always seem to get into trouble. So about a week later I grudgingly sat down and we watched the pilot episode (the set up for the entire series, that explains the characters and introduces the universe, that didn’t air until just as the series was being cancelled). I think I might have fallen asleep. Can’t remember. Then we pushed on and watched the next episode, the one that actually aired first (FOX is a really stupid broadcasting company). By the end of that episode I was hooked. Over the next week or so we watched several more episodes and then I went out and bought myself a copy on DVD. Then we finished the series and I rewatched the whole thing on my own set of discs. Then I gave my set away to another friend to get her hooked, and bought myself another set on DVD. Then I gave that set away to yet another friend and bought myself a third set (fourth if you count the set I initially bought for James). Then I gave THAT set away and bought another. See what was happening? At some point I’d purchased and given away probably close to a dozen sets and I watched each set before I gave it away. Basically it became a joke among me and my friends. All they had to do was say “so and so hasn’t seen Firefly yet” and I’d just give them my set and go buy another for myself. Then, a couple years ago, I got a Blu-ray set for myself … and there it sits. I think I still have a DVD set somewhere in a box, but … I haven’t watched that Blu-ray set yet (or did I? Can’t remember now, but I must have). Why? Couldn’t say, but I’ve literally watched the series so many times I can’t even recall how many times I’ve seen it. But now with all the crap about Whedon that’s come out, I’m kinda hesitant to go back and watch the series again.

So, actually the show's popularity is a myth, and it's just been you buying the DVDs, the whole time.

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "So, actually the show's popularity is a myth, and it's just been you buying the DVDs, the whole time."

Well … possibly … but statistically unlikely. On the other hand, I did get people in the theater before the showing of the film Serenity, to sing the Firefly theme song. Don’t think I could do that now, I’ve almost forgotten the lyrics.

Probably the only episodes of shows I might have seen as many times As I’ve watched Firefly are original series Star Trek (just because it’s been run on syndicated TV for so many years in the 1970s) and Space: 1999. Even the new seasons of Doctor Who with Eccleston and Tennant probably don’t rack up as many viewings for me as Firefly.

message 1128: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Speaking of Who:

Meglos: okay, not as bad as its reputation, but it is a mess.
Decent effects and design, some good ideas and a pretty solid cast.
Tom is in fine form, Jacqueline Hill is back, as is K-9's original voice.

The society of the planet doesn't make much sense, they never fully explain the maguffin, the first 3 episodes are very busy and the finale is unsatisfying rush because we spent so much time running around the same three corridors.

Not terrible, but I get why it's never on anyone's top 10 list.

message 1129: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "Speaking of Who: Meglos … Not terrible, but I get why it's never on anyone's top 10 list."

Yeah, not on my top 10.

message 1130: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Shames as there are good bits, but they do not add up to a solid whole.

It's not dull, just odd and clunky.

message 1131: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I think, if I’m remembering correctly, it felt too conventional and predictably Doctor Who.

message 1132: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments The plot itself is pretty flimsy and the planet's society makes little sense. so half the guest cast feel underwritten.

But, it's full of odds and ends that are good: Meglos is a fun villain, Tom playing two roles is fun, a throw away line in episode becomes a big deal in episode 4, Rommana and get plenty to do and the return of Jacqueline Hill.

It's just the stuff connecting all those bits is very weak.

Oh well, on to E-space!

message 1135: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments So, I’ve now got the following on preorder:

Web of Fear on DVD
Tom Baker Complete Season 6 on Blu-ray (season 17)
Colin Baker Complete Season 1 on Blu-ray (season 22)
Complete Series 13: Flux on Blu-ray

I think the Tom Baker set will include Shada, multiple versions in fact. And it doesn’t look like the Colin Baker set will include his first story arc, The Twin Dilemma, as a bonus feature.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I'm going to try another episode, as there's some good stuff there and I can see what they are trying to do, but mostly I watch and think 'How are you all not dead? How can you all manage to make so many bad choices and not be dead?"

It's frustrating, as I should love this.
