They already did this on Star Trek: Voyager. Still it would be fun to see the Doctor Who take on her disappearance.

I like this one a lot. No aliens. Just a classic Hartnell Doctor historical. Perfect.

I like all these ideas.

You could go even earlier than that, such as Fleming's visit to a casino in Lisbon mid-war that directly inspired Casino Royale. As Operation: Hellfire in one of the Big Finish Third Doctor sets proved, there's something about that incarnation and the Second World War setting that goes together quite well.

I was thinking of while Fleming was writing that first Bond novel, or directly before hand, but earlier works as well.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Kind of like the idea of a young Flemming meeting a sauve, snappy dressing guy with a thing for gadgets and possible his sinister, mysterious arch foe during WW2 and that being a big inspiration for Bond.

Cheesy, but fun, if done right

Rick | 2260 comments What about the fourth Doctor meeting a young and impressionable Roald Dahl: “Jelly Baby?”

message 1209: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Oh … oh … wait … the Twelfth Doctor showing up on the set of a particular film in spring 1965 and meeting Peter Cushing. The Doctor doesn’t realize it’s a movie set at first and thinks the Daleks are real. Maybe even having Missy, Bill and Nardole. Hilarity and shenanigans ensue. Maybe have some non-Daleks aliens involved just to really get things messed up. Autons? Sontarans?

Wait … wait … and have some allusions to the notion that “Peter Cushing” might actually be an incarnation of the Doctor (without his memories, aka the Timeless Child) , but it all goes completely over twelve’s head, but Bill and Missy seem to be aware that something odd is occurring.

How about the sixth Doctor meeting a young Jules Verne? And Verne is very impressed with the TARDIS.

The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe have trouble figuring out how they picked up this stowaway.

Yeah, but the Voyager episode isn't that great.
My story would be way more fun.
And I've had her scribbled in my notes as a potential companion for years.

I didn't have a Doctor in mind, but the more I thought about it the more I kept seeing Hartnell in one of those tricorner hats.

Hartnell is ALWAYS a good choice for the historicals. So yes. But I’d also like to see more of the other Doctors get purely historical adventures.

See,mi just thought: if he goes to medieval England it would seem too obvious, so I went with the earlier end of Roman occupation era.

I joke about it should be a story for whichever Doctor looks best in a tricorner hat, but the idea of #6 changing into a 1700's suit for the story is actually a good visual that works for me.

I told you my criteria for picking a Doctor for this story idea: would they look good in a tricorner hat.

My thought process isn't getting deeper than that.

message 1229: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Hat jokes aside, I do think there should be more pure historicals.
Every Doctor should have had one. They should have been a feature of a Doctor's run, like having a Dalek story.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments since we are talking Doctor Who meeting other literary figures, let me include a bit of shameless self promotion:
One of stories for Blackcoat Press have Doctor Omega ( their stand in for the Hartnell Doctor) arriving in Fritz Lang's Metropolis and I even turned the mad scientist Rotwang into a renegade "time Lord".

And on that note, I turn to Big Finish … Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures - Lost Warriors

Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures - Lost Warriors Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures - Lost Warriors by James Kettle

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is the third set of Ninth Doctor Adventures from Big Finish starring Christopher Eccleston.

3.1 The Hunting Season ~ Nothing particularly wrong with this one, just nothing all that special either. The Doctor gets involved with a spot of trouble that seems to mash-up Downton Abbey with something out a Zane Grey novel. Not a pairing that particular thrilled me, as it’s a watered down variation of both ideas (2/5).

3.2 The Curse of Lady Macbeth ~ A fun Doctor Who twist on the story of Macbeth. Fast paced and very entertaining (3/5).

3.3 Monsters in Metropolis ~ The Ninth Doctor! Fritz Lang! Metropolis! Cybermen?! This could be really exciting … I’ve only gotten to the open theme music and I’ve already got really, I mean really, really high expectations. // And I’m back. Whoa! That was sooo good. Brilliantly woven, great script, excellent performances, wonderful sound design. Excellent. Excellent. Excellent (5/5).

Weak start to this set. I was a bit worried, but a strong second act salved my trepidations about this set. And then the last story? Absolutely brilliant pseudo-historical third act. While the last story does have some similarities to the episode Dalek, the historical setting, the production of the film Metropolis, the way things get set in motion and wrapped up really set it apart brilliantly. This set also included the usual behind-the-scenes bonus features including interviews with cast & crew. Averaging the three stories out results in a 3 out of 5 score.

Well, at least in my story, it's not the movie set, but Metropolis is an actual place and I made Rotting his version of the Master.

Now, I'm afraid to mention the couple other Dr. Omega stories I wrote.

I don't think the anthologies: Tales of the Shadowmen, are available as e-books, but feel free to check out the blackout press site.
If you like victorian/ early 1900s mystery and sci-fi, there's a ton of great stuff.
Even the stuff I didn't write.

Fun series. I'd be a fan even if I wasn't in it.
So many stories that I'm jealous I didn't think of first.
I don't show up until volume 3.

Yeah, I love that era of lion from late victorian to the pulps and the French created all their own versions, that were fun to read on their own, and even better as they became a set of toys to play with.

I may never get to professionally write Doctor Who, Tarzan, Doc Savage etc, but I have gotten to use a bunch of French stand ins, to build my own little corner in the literary universe.

Or in some cases write PD characters.
I wrote a mystery featuring Captain Nemo and am currently writing a story featuring Phileas Fogg!

I’ve actually not read Around the World in Eighty Days yet, quite a few others by Verne I’ve read and enjoy enormously, but I did just watch the miniseries with David Tennant. I’m certain that, to put it politely, they took a lot of liberties, but the joyed the series enormously. So much so that I’ll likely be nudging the book up on my list to get to sooner rather than later. I have read a graphic adaptation of it though, so where back in my childhood. And I think it was also one of the books I read as a kid that I found out many years later were dumbed down kid-friendly versions of classic novels. At the time I read them, I had no idea they were edited and heavily revised. Enormously infuriating to discover that I was tricked by a publisher into thinking I was reading the actual classic.

Probably mentioned this before, but "around the world in 80 days" is one of my favorite all time books.
It got me hooked on Jules Verne, reading about travel and reading in general.
Still own one of the copies I bought in college because I wore out my original one.

message 1244: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Was really interested in the miniseries...until I watched the trailer.
Tennant looks great, but they made too many bad choices.

Probably watch it at some point, as I've seen all the adaptions (I think the David Niven movie is the best.) but feel no urge to rush.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments New Thunderbirds cartoon is pretty decent.
Some of the uniform and character designs are iffy, but everything else looks great and it hits a nice balance of updating but keeping what worked from the original.

Cute bit where one of the brothers is watching TV and the show he's watching is Stingray.
