Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Unfortunately, a lot of bad people got away with a lot of really shitty behavior and now that we are trying to deal with it all, it's going to be a big umbrella of punishment.

A lot of guys are going to get scooped up and we'll have to sort out the Kevin Spacy's from the James Gunn's.

Some guys whose transgressions were a ways back and minor will have a couple rough months and then work their way back to normal.

Not fun, but it kind of needs to happen.

I agree. But there’s also a world of difference between bad behavior and assaulting someone. Sexual harassment is indeed a problem, and culture needs to change. But lumping all misconduct of a sexual nature into a single category isn’t going to do society any good what so ever. I’m not trying to excuse or condone Barrowman’s behavior, it was (from what I’ve read of the incidents) inappropriate. He was reprimanded at the time. He apologized. And he’s changed his behavior. This also happened years ago. Noel Clarke apparently tried to throw his former costar under the bus in an attempt to basically say “we all did things back then” or “I’m not going down alone” with regards to his past behavior, for which he is not taking responsibility for. What’s happening now is that BBC and Big Finish are scared of the bad publicity if they appear to be turning a blind eye on Barrowman, while Clarke screams and rants that he did nothing wrong with multiple woman accusing him of harassment.

On the other hand, it is possible that something within the release that Big Finish is indefinitely shelving might play off the notion of sexually inappropriate behavior. Perhaps the Doctor walks in on Ianto and Jack while they’re supposed to be working. Perhaps Jack exposes himself to the Doctor. If there is some kind of inappropriate behavior included in the release and Big Finish is concerned about it appearing they’re condoning or encouraging said behavior, this I could understand. But to just knee-jerk cancel it because of the current publicity is frighteningly juvenile. What I’m fearing is happening from this reaction is the same conduct that promotes a ‘zero tolerance’ policy and goes from no one is allowed to call anyone else a queer and becomes a complete ban on any discussion of homosexuality at all.

Matthew Kresal | 118 comments Given current controversies, I had half-expected Absent Friends to get pulled. In some ways it’s a damned if do, damned if you don’t situation for BF whatever they do. Though it’s also worth remembering that as BF licenses Torchwood from the BBC, and the BBC has ultimate say over what gets released, there’s a possibility that the decision might not be a BF one to have made. Especially with the Time Fractures theatre thing having dropped his pre-recorded segment, as well. The fact that Nick Briggs re-tweeted this (and it was liked by a number of BF folks at one point) lays that out in so many words.

Yeah, I hadn’t thought about the BBC directing them to not release it. In any case I’ve not heard back from Big Finish about my email as to whether they’ll just refund my payment or credit my account on a future purchase. I did specify this if the release is just being delayed, I’d rather wait for the release. They said to contact them, so I did. Now I’ll just wait.

I’m still blaming it all on Noel Clarke.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments So, apparently, BF has recast Harry Sulivan and Sarah Jane Smith...and I really don't know howI feel about it.

We've lost a lot of Who actors, and BF has recast several with impressive results, but this seems like one too many.

Only listened to one trailer, but the actress, doesn't sound enough like her to get my blessing.

message 660: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Kresal | 118 comments That’s Lis Sladen’s daughter Sadie playing Sarah Jane these days. Having heard her in Return of the Cybermen, she’s a pretty good match.

I think a lot of the recasting’s are down to personal taste. I tend to prefer they capture the spirit of the character/original performer, rather than getting in someone who is a vocal match but doesn’t have much range. And I say that as someone who was vocally against Tim Trealor initially as the Third Doctor, only to hear that first set with him. But I know there’s people who want the voice and for whom knowing, even unconsciously, that they’re listening to someone else can throw them out of a story.

“YMMV,” as the kids say.

message 661: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I was originally only interested in the audios that featured the original cast members, but I was intrigued with The First Doctor Adventures: Volume 1 which uses the cast from the docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time led by David Bradley. And I was enormously impressed with the result. So I have to agree that I’d much rather have them recast the parts with actors that “capture the spirit”, as you put it, than have an exact match that might not have the necessary talent. I’ve also enjoyed both Peter Purves stepping in for William Hartnell and Frazier Hines is simply wonderful filling in for Patrick Troughton, in their various Companion Chronicles and Early Adventures releases. In the few I’ve heard of Tim Trealor filling in for Jon Pertwee, I’ve also been pleasantly delighted. In any case though, it is a matter of personal preference and I certainly wouldn’t begrudge anyone who didn’t care for the replacements. The originals can never truly be replaced.

Very cool
As another struggling young writer, I'm always impressed with anybody who makes the the leap to novels.
I've just done short stories myself.

Funnily enough, this started out as me expecting it to be a short story. Indeed, I wrote what it is now chapters two and three of the published novel under that assumption. It was only about there that I realized, as Neil Gaiman apparently did part way into writing The Ocean at the End of the Lane, that I'd accidentally started writing a novel.

The inverse of that is my short story The Light of a Thousand Suns (published in last year's After the Kool-Aid is Gone) that was deliberately written originally as a 50,000 word novel. A buddy who was encouraging me to write novels told me my outlined plot wouldn't work as one, which I scoffed at. Turns out, as I realized about 10 days into NaNoWriMo 2018, that he was 100% correct. So the novel draft got cut down to roughly 10% of its original length and works quite well in that form.

I suppose my advice is not to overthink things but also find a story that will work better being told on a larger canvas.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Gerry Anderson watch update: Started Captain Scarlet.
I'd forgotten how dark that show is.

It's more in line with UFO than Thunderbirds.

message 666: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I’ve never seen Captain Scarlet, or Fireball XL5 for that matter. Interesting that it has more of the darker tone in common with UFO though, as I’d have thought it would be similar with the other Supermarionation shows.

message 667: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Fireball is fun, but it's the kind of space opera you'd see in a Flash Gordon serial.

Captain Scarlet, like with Space:1999, if you squint slightly, you can easily put it in the same timeline as UFO.

Rick | 2260 comments There’s a new audio series coming out, First Action Bureau Series One, which is similarly situated. Apparently in a world that has included the various Anderson series, or at least narratives that are fairly close. I’ve already ordered it, don’t know that I would have otherwise, but it stars Sacha Dhawan, who was just delicious as the Master.

Finally catching up on the Netflix Iron fist and Sacha Dhawan shows up.
The cast saves that show, as the writing is a mess.

Bit disappointed that episode 13 of season 1 spent so much time setting up season 2.
They knew they were getting a second season and the writing was still that clunky...?

I also think it stumbled, as of the bunch, Iron Fist has the most fantastical elements and it didn't have the budget/plan to pull them off.
The netflix stuff was super serious and grounded and the writers couldn't seem to get a handle on how to blend that with 'And then , I fought a dragon..."

message 674: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "... the writers couldn't seem to get a handle on how to blend that with 'And then , I fought a dragon...""

That’s pretty valid. Although Iron Fist had a rocky origin in the comics too. With numerous writers and artists over his first dozen issues that kept trying to remold things that the previous team had done. The series feels “authentic” in that regard, but that’s not necessarily a compliment.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Random grumble: Not a fan of race swapping in movies/TV, but even worse is the annoying verbal gymnastics people go through to justify it.
Stop it.
You're gonna do, just do it and take the backlash.
Especially with comics.
If we have 40 years of art showing us what the character looked like, some guy babbling about how deep down they always meant for Billy Batson to be a bisexual asian woman and that truly represents the meaning behind the Shazam comics, you are just adding an extra shovelful of annoying.

I might have exaggerated a tiny bit.
They are making a Sandman series and Death is now black.

Only member of the family that isn't a white actor and everyone is twisting themselves into pretzels defending it.

Just tired of it.

Rick | 2260 comments Warner/DC casting department is TERRIBLE. I mean they cast Keanu Reeves as John Constantine. That’s about as bad as casting Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt or as Jack Reacher. But then FOX cast Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, so Marvel has some issues as well.

DC redeemed themselves with the CW Constantine.
Marvel does better ( if we ignore the last Fantastic Four), as they tend to do it with mi nor characters, rather than characters that will attract huge protest.
Hugh Jackman was the least of the X-movies problems.

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "Back to Who watch: Ribos Operation: ..."

I just finished The Invasion with Troughton last night. I love that one, and the animation for episodes 1 & 4 are well done and keep things moving right along. In fact, I feel like this is one of the fastest paced Troughton serials as there are lots of sequences that compress the action of hours into a few lines of dialogue. It is a shame that Jamie gets shot near the end and misses out of most of the last episode while he’s recovering, luckily it “was just a flesh wound.” But I could see fans watching it when it originally aired, gasping that “Jamies’s been shot!”

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "... Hugh Jackman was the least of the X-movies problems. "

Oh I know, I just love picking on Jackman. He was so good as Wolverine it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing the character. But he WAY TOO TALL to be Logan. It’s like casting a blonde guy under 6-feet tall to play James Bond! That would be a total disaster! Oh wait, Daniel Craig was the BEST BOND EVER. I totally had to eat my words on that one. I went into Casino Royale thinking it was going to suck donkey CENSORED and ended up walking out of the theater thinking BEST BOND MOVIE EVER! Still, back to Wolverine, I do hope they cast someone short to play Wolverine in the MCU version. (And I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Charlie Plummer to be cast as Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch for the MCU Fantastic Four please, please, please, please ...)

For being such a long story, the Invasion never feels padded or like it's dragging. It is a very busy story and moves at as good pace and juggles it's cast nicely.
Plus, some great creepy Cybermen moments.

Yeah, on paper, Jackman shouldn't work, but he does a really good job, and now he's what everyone thinks of as Wolverine.
Gonna be a struggle if they go for a more accurate look, but I hope they do.

Like Craig as an actor, he feels like Bond, but his movies were all over the place.

I really, really want them to cast someone who’s 5’2” or 5’4”, who’s really completely not the typical “casting a movie star look” that will really embody the character form the comics. It’s so frustrating when casting agents just look at head shots, when comic book character’s appearances change with every artist. It’s the physique and the attitude that needs to be cast. A little makeup and hair product and the face is all but completely malleable. Jackman does an excellent portrayal of Logan, no argument, but I’d love to see the comics version on screen. Patrick Stewart was BRILLIANT as Professor X. Nobody could equal his performance. James McAvoy, as good an actor as he is, paled in comparison. But as much as I LOVED Ian McKellan’s Magneto, and thought no one could do better, Michael Fassbender proved to be at the very least as good in the role.
