This is my first time reading her book, and it is good. I am reading a Hindi book after a long time.

The group 's name is Catching up with Classics and lots more . It's a very large group with 4 moderators . They read 4 books every month - old classics ( before 1900 ) , new classics ( 1900 to 1999) , short story and long read ( tome , over 3 months ) . Nominations and polls occur 2 months in advance , a non spoiler thread of each book is opened 1 month in advance , and a spoiler thread in the chosen month itself . Member participation is good . There's also a revisit thread for books that were read more than 1 year back .
I wish member participation in this group would increase . We could have some great group reads . If our moderators could get some enthusiasm and encouragement from us members, perhaps the monthly reads would restart .

message 1505: by Savita (new)

Savita Singh | 1885 comments You can join Catching up with Classics and lots more group if you want , Austin . They are very welcoming . Only thing , in Indian Readers, if monthly reads restart , there is a greater chance of landing with contemporary fiction , which perhaps members like you and Leena are interested in .

I second your thought. It would be great if this group could restart the monthly read or even the PIFM. PIFM helped me read many books which were just lying at the back of my TBR.

message 1508: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4073 comments Wow. How did I forget about PIFM?! Anulekha, now that you mentioned it, I realise that it has been discontinued as well. If not for the games, few friends and the Secret Santa event every year, I would have left this group long ago. Only the games and occasional buddy reads once in a while is keeping this group afloat. It's about time I joined other groups that interest me.

message 1509: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4073 comments Savita, I joined a sci-fi group a year ago and they too have similar rules to the classics group. But they almost never nominate books that I am interested in. They always nominate books about space exploration, apocalypse on the earth, intergalactic wars, the far future, artificial intelligence, robots and of the ilk. But I don't have much interest in those themes. I am more interested in sci-fi related to biology, biotechnology, medicine, forensics etc. Robin Cook, Michael Palmer, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, Richard Preston, Patricia Cornwell, Michael Crichton, Tess Gerittsen etc are some of the authors who deal with those themes.

Actually , Indian Readers has a huge membership . Even if a small percentage showed interest and participation in the monthly reads , buddy reads and the PIFM , perhaps the momentum would catch on - just wishful thinking ? The nominations in this group tend to be more variable , mix of classics, contemporaries , science fiction and so on which is a good thing . Well , keeping fingers crossed.

I discontinued BoTM and PIFM because of low engagement. :(

Even if people nominate and vote, they hardly ever read let alone discuss.

I have read only romances in last two months. Helped me catching up my GR challenge after months of slump. Some were good, others not so.

If anyone likes to read that genre and enjoy historical romance genre I would highly recommend Judith McNaught books. Friends recommended me the author 5-6 years ago and I finally read her. Kicked myself for not picking her up work earlier.

Other than that a lot of time was spent watching anime. Any animes fans here?

Yes , true , Em ! Right now I , too , can't think of any way in which at least a handful of members from this huge group can be induced to actively participate in group reads , buddy reads and PIFM . There are members who do participate intermittently, but, I suppose , consistency is required to make the venture a success. It's really a pleasure to read in a group and exchange comments as we go along . Missed out facets of books come into focus many times . Also , nominations bring new authors / books into focus that one may not have been even aware of . Well , I , for one , will continue to keep my fingers crossed.

We did something similar for selecting a tome earlier this year. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt was selected eventually as the winner.

Savita Singh | 1885 comments I am very much in... it'll be so nice if BOTM restarts in this group. Actually , there is a sufficient number of interested readers in this huge group . The only thing is to get interesting books to the polls so that a sufficient number join in for the reads . Even 3 participating readers can make a read interesting .

Hope I can think of some books to nominate for October . I will be able to nominate a Robin Cook book and , perhaps, a Harry Bosch ( suggested by Prosenjit ) . Will they do , or don't they qualify ??

BOTM maybe tweaked a little bit. If the selected book doesn't get 3 people willing to read it, then the next winner can be selected and so on, till there are at least 3 participants. Got to be careful when an unknown person's nominated book gets selected. By unknown, I mean a person who is not active on Goodreads. He/she never discusses anything about the book after nominating it. I remember once when Pet Sematary was selected. The nominator didn't contribute anything. Only me, Leena contributed to the discussion and that too to a book I DNF'd. Leena had already read it before.

Wow, a Robin Cook book. Never seen anyone nominate them before. I like his books. Used to be popular during my school days. Now he has been almost forgotten.

I don't know about Harry Bosch. I binged it and it says its a legal thriller. But when I read the summary of one of the books, it said that it's about a police officer or something. I thought legal thrillers involved lawyers as main characters, not cops or detectives.

Harry Bosch is a homicide detective solving murders. I have read the first 6-7 of his books in sequence this year and all of them are great!!!

If you have read Inspector Wexford by Ruth Rendell or the first few books in the Cormoran strike series its similar.

Try The Black Echo its the first book in the series!
