Great you are joining too Anulekha ! I will just check with Austin and confirm Rebecca for say mid July .

Austin, there are so many new horror writers that let me make u a list, and then we can read it together for Halloween. I really can't like Stephen King, so..."

I have seen The Omen - great movie , but I don't remember too many details because it was so long back . The book is 225 pages long - very reasonable . I wouldn't at all mind joining in .
As far as contemporary authors are concerned , I do like to give them a try if the blurbs are interesting and the reviews are more or less good . But I would like to avoid tomes by a completely unknown author .

Savita Singh | 1885 comments Leena wrote: "The omen is a classic and the movie is fantastic.!! But give me a few days and I hopemtoncurate a listbof horror only and lets take it from there."

Looking forward to reading your list , Leena . 🤯

message 1404: by Savita (new)

Savita Singh | 1885 comments Austin , we had decided on Tess , but Anulekha wants to join in for Rebecca in July / August. Leena is ok with both books ,and you also mentioned that you're ok with both books . So , shall we finally fix up Rebecca for say mid July ? It has 450 pages , so the reading will spill into August . If you are ok with this , I will post a buddy read request in case any other member/ s wish to join .
We can read Tess sometime later this year .

Austin George | 4073 comments Yes Savita, I am ok with Rebecca for mid July.

Austin George | 4073 comments The Historian is a tome, Savita. The author, Elizabeth kostova, may be unfamiliar to you. So I guess that book is ruled out.

message 1407: by Savita (new)

Savita Singh | 1885 comments Yay ! 😊 . I will post the buddy read request tomorrow then .

Well , I will check the blurb tomorrow but I am rather nervous of tomes ( even by classic authors ) .

Black River by Nilanjana Roy
An interesting Indian noir. Pretty good, but would have been great had the author stuck to the crime investigation elements in the plot rather than trying too much.

Loved it- got to know its based on a book...got it in a book donation camp and became a big fan of Bob Lee Swagger. On the verge of completing the series, on the 11th book and the 12 th is on the shelf. Loved all except for one book, so its a win

message 1425: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments I've trudged, skipped , banged my head against the wall but finally done with Me Beford You. Im one of the very few who's found this book extremely offensive. And horror of horros this is a series
😱

message 1426: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments On a good note I'm reading A Rising Man. This is a treat to read. Beautifully written, his description of British Calcutta is amazing. You can pretty much visualise it.
I've to start Vassem Khan's Midnight at Malabar House. This is going to be with a bushel of salt as I hated his previous series of Baby Ganesh. This is typical Indian writing for the phirang crowd

Bookworm (have loads of catching up to do) | 1001 comments Leena wrote: "Are you guys on the translated Japanese books group. They do a decent amount of reading translated Japanese literature."

No.not in any such group. I'm currently nursing a slump, hence MIA. :(

Started reading Raven Boys, read first two books and abandoned it by the third book.

Read Yellowface. My first book by the author and she seems to a great following here because of hit Poppy War books. Back to Yellowface, it was a page turner with a lot of social media drama (sadly, the reality of current times), and an opportunistic protagonist. Enjoyable read but mostly it reminded me of A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne which was a great read.

Now reading Tress of the Emerald Sea.

Bookspective | 1170 comments Had started The Outsiders and then put is aside to read Giovanni's Room, which was incredible. So back the Outsiders. Have also just picked up a historical fiction The Thorn Birds

Giovanni's Room was too difficult for me to get into. Had to DNF it.

message 1443: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4073 comments Such beautiful writing! I have never really been a sucker for poems or ballads but this is just so beautiful to read. I have never read anything by Oscar Wilde except for the mangled and modified versions I read at school as part of our curriculum. About time I explored more of his works!

Im really surprised . Yes, I had to take breaks in between to help me tide over the intensity of his writing. I still can not believe the quantity and quality of plot hes packed in the 180 oages. Novellas are tricky busines and both James Baldwin and Dostoevsky (White Nights) have proven to be masters.
