Austin George | 4073 comments Yes! So when do we begin this book? (Expecting it to be the eventual winner). I can start reading from the 12th of October. I am currently reading Srikanta, probably my favourite book of this year! Just brilliant writing. It's a pity that most readers ignore Indian classics even though they are as good as other well known classics.

Srikanta? The bengali novel? It is one of the best by Saratchandra. Hope you are reading the complete trilogy?

Yes, the Bengali novel. I am reading it in English. It consists of 4 parts - The River, The Exile, The Forbidden Fruit and Journey's End.

Austin George | 4073 comments Savita, when will you be starting Death on the Nile? I am asking you since you seem to be busy with other books as of now.

Well , Austin , the polls will go on till 10th October, 12 midnight . Looks like Death on the Nile will probably win ( Anulekha ) . The thread will probably be put up by 11th or 12th . I should be able to join in latest by 15th . Those of us who took so much interest in reviving the BOTM had better be among the first to participate too ! When do you intend to join ?

message 1606: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4073 comments It's actually PDT or PTD time something which means the poll would end on the 11th of October only, at noon. The earliest I can start is 12th October. I will be ordering a copy of Death on the Nile and Sign of Four (I hope I got the book name right).

message 1607: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4073 comments Your tentative start date of 15th October is good too Savita.

After reading your review, Austin, I plan to pick up Srikanta next.

Srikanta is a great trilogy by legendary Bengali novelist Saratchandra Chatterjee. Great reading. There was a great series in old Doordarshan on Srikanta.

Savita Singh | 1885 comments I have finished the sixth and last tale of T.Hardy 's Wessex Tales : The Distracted Preacher . I gave it 5 stars because along with T.Hardy 's clear and clean language and a story that keeps the reader's interest alive , the end was appealing to me . ☆☆Beware Spoilers (view spoiler) ☆☆ He is a man well suited for his profession as a church minister . Ralph Emerson says : Treat a man as he is, and he will remain as he is . Treat a man as he could be, and he will become what he should be . Wow. I think you will enjoy it Anulekha. It's a less-known gem. A 5 star read for me so far. I never thought my favourite book of the year would be an Indian book and that too from an author I heard of only recently.

message 1622: by Austin (new)

It's a quadrilogy I think. My book divided into 4 main parts. Since you seem to be a Bengali, why don't you suggest me some Bengali books that you liked?

Hope it's the BOTM ! I suppose it depends on our enthusiasm ?!

message 1626: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4073 comments Yes, let it be considered as a BOTM. So we may have to do another poll soon for November. Should we pick a particular theme for November? Horror for October, Romance for February etc.

message 1627: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4073 comments I see, so Thomas Hardy is like Dostoevsky.

I don't know whether it will be possible to pick a theme for every month . Actually , miscellaneous nominations will also be fun . It's nice coming to know new authors / books ( though sometimes new authors can turn out to be absolute flops . I suppose one has to take a chance . Nothing ventured , nothing gained !

Prosenjit Paul (bangaloredbong) | 80 comments Just came to the conclusion that I am addicted to thrillers, bordering on an unhealthy obsesssion.

Hence planning to read some humour!!

Added The Office Ladies (By Pam and Angela from the American version of The Office) and The World's Worst Assistant (By Sona Movsassian, Conan o Brien's PA).

Looking forward to more suggestions to break my thriller addiction!!

Everything apart from his William Warwick series is worth reading. Try Kane And Abel first if you want. It is wonderful.

I have read his other short story collection books - And Thereby Hangs a Tale and A Quiver Full of Arrows. 2/3 of the short stories were brilliant. The rest were ok, not bad. Jeffrey Archer's short stories were the most I enjoyed. Even in his short stories, some of them, he talks about business, which I liked. I am no businessman in real life though.

I liked Kane and Abel very much. But in the middle portion of the book, I didn't like about 100 pages or so. I liked As the Crow Flies a little more. But I would suggest you to go with K & A as ATCF is a very long book.
