Welcome everyone!

The Nightmare Before Christmas has always been a favourite of mine, and my kids have been introduced to it over the years and love it too! I chose Oogie Boogie because his song was always one of my favourites and he is kind of gross with the worms coming out of him which my boys love. haha

Anyway, it would be great if you could introduce yourself! You can also start adding your books to our tracking spreadsheet here

As a reminder, we need to spell out B-L-O-O-D as many times as possible in the first week. We also need one book (across the team ; not one each ;) ) to cover each of these for extra bonus points:

"Word in Text (20 points)"
"Word in Title/Series (30 points)"
"Word on Cover (40 points)"
"Word as Genre (50 Points)"
If you have a book that fits these for blood, please shout it out as we will assign you to that task. Please only nominate yourself if you are absolutely sure you can read that book in week 1 (Oct 27 - Nov 3)

I look forward to getting to know everyone a bit more!

Suzanne | 5417 comments Hi everyone! I'm Suzanne - I love to read - I like most genres from fantasy to mystery to romance. I'm married with 3 kids, and have a dog and some chickens we got last spring (and we're getting 3-4 dozen eggs a week now - yikes!)

Quick question for "Word on cover" does it need a picture of blood on the cover, or the actual word "Blood"?

I'm excited to do this - the wheels are beautiful!

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Hello, everyone! I'm Lauri from Hawaii & am so excited to be here! I think this will be my 2nd Wheel outing. I love the holiday twist the game has taken. Hope to get to know everyone in the coming weeks...
Off to check my books now!

message 15: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I can read The Best Man to Die in the 1st week. It has the word blood in the text on page 34...

I can see our spreadsheet but have never been able to successfully manipulate any of them! So sorry to be a bother. You can put me down for that for sure though.

The Best Man to Die (Inspector Wexford, #4) by Ruth Rendell

Lexi | 4247 comments I'm Lexi and I'm in Massachusetts (EST). I'm a brand new PhD student and have 2 cats. My strongest memory of Nightmare Before Christmas is actually from Kingdom Hearts and playing with my younger brother. I read 4-5 books a week so I can claim a few of these. Do the ones for Blood as special cover, genre etc., also need to spell blood?
Edited: I just looked this up and yes

I can do The Queen of Blood (D-Durst) for blood in title or Servant of the Underworld (Obsidian and Blood, #1) by Aliette de Bodard (B-Bodard) for blood on cover.

message 17: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments Also, only one book (Dead Until Dark) has ever been shelved as blood ten times and only another ten are 6-9 times. None are MPG so does that mean we cannot get those points?

message 18: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I'm ashamed to admit that I have never watched Nightmare all the way through! I hope to remedy this this year. I have no idea who Oogie Boogie is!!

message 19: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I have From Dead to Worse on my tbr - which was shelved 5 times as blood - not sure if that'd work though.

message 20: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Hi all
I'm Chava from Melbourne, Australia. I am married with 4 young kids. I don't know if I've done a wheel-a-ton before, I think I have, but who knows. I do so many challenges, lol.

I can read Blood Sport for 30 points or B
I can also read Jane Doe and the Cradle of All Worlds which has 31 mentions of the word Blood in the text, for 20 points

message 21: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments what does "word on cover" actually mean? The title is on the cover...

I think I'll have to find this movie and watch it over the weekend now

Wow! That is a lot of eggs!!

And good question. I just went and checked out the captains group thread which has the Q&A and it does need to be an image:
Copying below

◈ Q:How does the "word on cover" actually work? can it be in text or does it have to be an image?
A:It has to be an image, but it can be singular/plural. Some examples:

So the rule was changed.... because once we put the words to teams I went looking and found that some would just be impossible. So it just needs to be on the first page of genres - there is no # limit.

When you click on a book, go to "see top shelves" and that first page that shows (e.g. https://www.goodreads.com/work/shelve...) is where we need to find the shelf "blood"

It will be tricky!!!

FYI - copying from captains group

============

FAQs

◈ Q: Do we need to write reviews for the book to count?
A: No, you just need to have them marked as "read"

◈ Q: Do I post all of my books to a special shelf or just ones as I read?
A: Your choice. Some captains may like just all "read" books on the special shelf, so just check with them once teams are assigned

◈ Q: What does it mean "Participating in a BOM" ? Answering a set or comment? Or do we need to answer all days to get the 20 points? Or is a 20 points per set of questions?
A:Provided you add to the discussion at some stage through the book. It doesn't need to be answering a set of questions if that doesn't appeal to you. You may just pop over and give some thoughts at different stages. It is just one set of points per book. However you do need to interact with others in the BOM thread for it to be considered “participation”.

◈ Q: For page counts, do we use the most popular edition on GR or the edition that we actually read?
    A: Edition you've read.
Default edition will be used for audiobooks and large print editions

◈ Q: If you read a BOM or a buddy read do you get points for the book size (say 5 if's 150 pages) plus additional as its a BOM or buddy read? (Say 30 if it's a buddy read) would equal 35 points? Do I have that right?
A: You get points for page count with or without BR/BOM points. BR/BOM points are extra points.

◈ Q: Do characters in non-fiction books count?
A: Typically no. For example, if it is a historical account of WWII and the story is about Winston Churchill, he is not considered a 'character'.
Exceptions would be something like a memoir, ( e.g. Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness) where someone is recounting events and situations ; then it is possible there would be characters.

◈ Q: Where there are multiple authors, can they be used?
A: If attributed on Goodreads, then yes. For example, Eternity's Wheel. Where it is a book with a collection of stories and Goodreads shows one author as the "editor", then you can only use the editor. (e.g. Dog is My Co-Pilot: Great Writers on the World's Oldest Friendship)

◈ Q:What does it mean "word as genre"?
A: It needs to be on the first page. So when you go to a book - click "see top shelves" and that first page that shows is where you need to find the word as a shelf

◈ Q:How does the "word on cover" actually work? can it be in text or does it have to be an image?
A:It has to be an image, but it can be singular/plural. Some examples:
BONES
A Bone to Pick (Aurora Teagarden, #2) by Charlaine Harris

TOMBSTONE
After Dead What Came Next in the World of Sookie Stackhouse (Sookie Stackhouse, #13.5) by Charlaine Harris

BLOOD
Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) by Kendare Blake

FAMILY
The Kitchen Boy A Novel of the Last Tsar by Robert Alexander

Blood as genre

This will be a tough one, as we need a book without a lot of ratings so that it will show on the first page of "top shelves". Here is a good place to start to see if you have anything on your tbr:

So... I can get Steeped in Blood: The Life and Times of a Forensic Scientist from the library which works for D and has "blood" on the top shelves https://www.goodreads.com/work/shelve... (3 people)

But I am an extremely queasy person so I'm happy for someone else to find something LOL
Otherwise I will put this on my list for the first week

message 33: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Ok thus far... Maybe a stupid question, BUT do the October BOMs still count if we start them earlier than 10/27? I think I'll need more than 5 days to read them....

Suzanne | 5417 comments That sounds like a fun trip Lisa - I hope you have a very enjoyable time!

message 37: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments So I looked for first page genre blood and I found the following three:
Drought
Pretty Dead
Blood Singers
I do not want to read any of them but have read lots of special books for challenges. (Quidditch being to blame for most of them).

message 38: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Oh yes, so many "special" Quidditch books.

My library has Eat Right 4 Your Type: The Individualized Diet Solution to Staying Healthy, Living Longer & Achieving Your Ideal Weight that has first page genre blood. I'm not dying to read it, but it wouldn't be awful to read either - I wouldn't mind horribly.

message 39: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I put mine in the tracking sheet for now, as it is probably the least objectionable of what we've found so far. But if someone finds a blood genre book you want to read, speak up because I don't mind switching at all!

Astrid wrote: "didn't realize the thread was open. Hi everyone! this is my first wheelathon!"

Welcome!
The main aim is to read at least one book a week once we start (Oct 27) where you can use it for the letters B, L, O or D. (as the word for our first week is "blood").
You can pop your books on the tracking spreadsheet or just post in the thread once you know what you are reading and Suzanne or I will put them on the s/sheet :)

I'm from Melbourne, Australia too. Same as Chava. This is my first Wheelathon as well

I haven't actually watched any of the Nightmare before Christmas but I think I'm going to for this challenge.

I've added a few books into the spreadsheet but I'd be happy to read whatever is needed
