I had been wondering why there's a lot of people shelving it as DNF on GR.

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Thing is I tried Stormdancer by same author before and didn't like it. A friend Nevernight is a good read, so I'm thinking if I should give him another try or not. Which is off-putting? Its goriness?

message 163: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I remember being so disappointed with the first Harry Potter movie because the characters looked nothing like what I imagined they would! But all in all, I do love the movies & will watch them whenever they're on TV! My favorite is Goblet of Fire. Favorite of the books, too!

In general, the book is always better that than the movie!

I hated the beginning of Nevernight and nearly DNF’d it, but after a few chapters it got really good! I am hoping to read Book 2 soon.

In other news, that Ryan Gosling meme is the funniest ILL joke ever.

I also didn't like Stormdancer. I read the whole book and found it sexist but loved the Iluminae trilogy so I have considered Nevernight.

Yes. Right off the bat, there's carnage. I'm waiting for some redeeming quality to surface. I picked it up because it was a BOM & looked like a quick read. I'm liking the Poppy War much more, even though it's way longer.

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Ok, I guess I'll stick with The Poppy War for now and pick up Nevernight for next time.

@Alysa - glad you enjoyed it 😉

With Nevernight.... I did enjoy it but I found it overly violent. Kind of like Divergent where I didn’t see why it had to be so violent. I think there may be lots of DNFs because the synopsis reads like YA but it definitely isn’t. My husband is listening to book 2 and he loves it.

The illuminae books are great

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Today's question/topic: Quick! Without deep thought -- what are your top 5 favorite books and / or movies?

message 172: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
Good idea to say without deep thought! lol

In no particular order, just off the top of my head, the movies that I watch multiple times:

Movies
1.Across the universe
2. Love Actually
3.Labyrinth
4. Nightmare Before Christmas (of course lol!)
5. One Day

Books
1. Wuthering Heights
2. Anna Korenina
3. Anything by Fredrik Backman
4. Anything by Michael J Sullivan
5. Anything by Melina Marchetta, Kerry Greenwood, Liane Moriarty, John Green and (mostly) anything by Jojo Moyes. Yes, I know that's cheating. LOL

message 173: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Movies (these I've watched more than once and enjoyed each time):
1) Viva e bella (Life is beautiful)
2) Mary Poppins (didn't even know it was a book)
3) Four weddings and a funeral
(I'm not a big movie buff so no idea)

Books:
1) Birdman
2) Small Great Things
3) all HP books (5 the least though) - these books got me reading again
4) I Am Pilgrim
5) Icon

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Movies:

6) Out of Africa

Books:
1) Clan of the Cave Bear
2) Joy Luck Club
3) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
4) The Red Tent
5) Aztec

All in no particular order! I'd like to add in all 3 original Star Wars movies and the entire Indiana Jones series .... When I'm not reading, I'm watching movies! Twister is inexplicable, but I'll watch it every time it's on. My family teases me about it. We don't have tornadoes in Hawaii.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments Hello all, back from a fantastic holiday with falling leaves, covered bridges and despite the disappointment of not getting to PEI and seeing Anne of Green Gables, I got to Concord to do a tour of Louisa May Alcott's Orchard House and saw where she wrote Little Women. And the memorials of Washington DC were amazing.

Now... ready to tune in to the mighty Wheelathon. Are there any letters we are short in that need extra reading for?

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2329 comments Oooh I love the question!

Movies:
1. About Time (I can forward/rewing to any particular scene without getting it wrong, I lvoe the OST, I love everything about it!)
2. The Sound of Music (because soundtrack of my childhood)
3. Tangled (I love the OST!)
4. Trouble with the Curve
5. Crazy, Stupid Love

We saw both Mamma Mia movies in the theater! You just know I was singing at the top of my lungs! Totally embarrassing my husband in the process -- BONUS!

I categorically love all musicals, live and movie. I purposely didn't list any. Sound of Music would be way up there, Kathleen! When I'm sick, I like to watch Fiddler on the Roof... OMG! Flower Drum Song, West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, Rent..... I still have some VHS tapes! Netflix is a godsend.

I cry at Braveheart every damn time! When his wife dies, at the end... But still I watch! I once missed a wedding because I'd watched Legends of the Fall the night before. My face was too messed up for me to appear in public!!

I'm loving all these suggestions. So many that are also on my "I love that!" list ;)

Welcome home, Lisa. It sounds like an amazing trip. I'm very jealous that you went to Louisa May Alcott's Orchard House.
When I was in Russia we visited Tolstoy's summer house where we wrote War and Peace and brought up his kids. It was very well preserved with his original writing desk and everything. The most noticeable part about those very old homes is the size. So small for such large families!

I hate it when movies make me ugly-cry and Legend of the Falls is another one. I have altogether stopped watching movies that have sad endings haha! I rarely watch and when I do, I'm mostly sticking with musicals, animated movies and anything lighthearted. I get too invested!

From main thread:

◈ BOM bonus:
- Writing a day's worth of discussion questions = 40 points
- Participating in a current BOM (participating in discussion) = 20 points
Note 1: We will accept one team member per book per team for writing a days DQs. If, by three days prior to the BOM starting, we don't have enough volunteers to write all DQs, then we will let more than one team member per team write questions. If we have more people than days sign up (prior to 3 days before start date) we will randomise the volunteers to determine those who can write DQs
Note 2: Books need to be part of the spell-it-out to be used for points

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments Top three books that just pop into my mind -

1. Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte - some of the most beautiful words ever written. I love it even more after visiting the Bronte Parsonage Museum last year.

2. The Troy Game series of 4 books by the late Australian writer Sara Douglass. Fantastic mix of history and fantasy.

3. The Fever series by Karen M Moning - non conventional mix of paranormal/urban fantasy/romance. I think she must be a Bronte fan because I can see similarities in the passion of her writing.

Favourite Movies - In no particular order.

1. Love Actually - I watch it every Christmas, it makes me feel all warm inside...
2. The Sound of Music - another feel good movie
3. The Piano with Holly Hunter
4. The Fifth Element with Bruce Willis
5. The first Terminator movie
6. The Notebook
7. Titanic
8. The original Star Wars Trilogy
9. Raiders of the Lost Ark
10. Grease

2) The Blacklist
3) The Handmaid's tale
4) Heartbreak High (another childhood favourite)
5) Flying Doctors (another childhood favourite)

Some others are Jeopardy!, The Big Bang Theory, American Housewife, the new Magnum P.I., Neighbors, Z Nation, Wynonna Earp, The Orville, Young Sheldon, XFiles.... Past favs are ALL the Bob Newhart Shows, M*A*S*H, Happy Days...

It's funny that I almost never watch TV, but I have all these favorites... I'm also a total sucker for the cheesy SyFy movies & all the Sharknados...
