Lexi | 4247 comments I had 13 5 stars, which is more than I expected (I have read 193 books so far this year). As noted Muderbot 2 and 3 are on there.

I would also suggest Circe by Madeline Miller and Provenance by Ann Leckie .

Suzanne | 5417 comments Oooh thanks for the reminder about Will Trent. They are not for the squeamish, but so engrossing. I need to finish that series!

message 253: by Eunice (new)

Eunice | 666 comments Everybody seems to be more generous with their ratings this year. (Or maybe it's just that a lot of good books were read this year.)

Most of my 5-star ratings this year were the Kate Daniels series when I read books 1-8 in one go for Tower Teams.

I liked The Shadow of the Wind too and...Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil. The second one's...BL...

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Thanks so much for the recommendations, ladies!

For my best books of 2018 I'd say: The Poppy War, Ready Player One, Purple Hibiscus, Dark Matter & Children of Blood and Bone

The Poppy War (The Poppy War, #1) by R.F. Kuang Ready Player One (Ready Player One, #1) by Ernest Cline Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Dark Matter by Blake Crouch Children of Blood and Bone (Legacy of Orïsha, #1) by Tomi Adeyemi

Nice! I love the mix of books we have here

message 256: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments I had to go through my list for the year to find some 5 star ones:
Snap (it just kept me hooked)
Cry, the Beloved Country (an oldie but a goodie)
The Butterfly Garden (again, it kept me hooked)
I Am Pilgrim (it's a tomb at over 800 pages, but it was probably my favourite book this year)
The Great Alone
The Perfect Mother

I read quite a few good books this year and I'm probably getting a bit more generous with my ratings. These were really good for me though.

Less than three days until the challenge begins! (countdown is here)

Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. So...

What book(s) are you trying to finish before Wheel-a-thon starts?

I am trying to finish
The Secret Science of Magic by Melissa Keil
and not because it is a bad book, but I could only get it as an ebook which means reading on my laptop and I don't do that often. I love the writer though!

Also, I'm going away tomorrow for the weekend and may not be around much, but will check in late Sunday (my time) after the challenge has kicked off

— Massiel (rollitosdecanela) | 512 comments Karen ⊰✿ - Better trying asking which one I'm not trying to finish 😂 I'm currently reading night huntress #6 and monsters of men by patrick ness

message 261: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I'm finishing The Social Lives of Dogs: The Grace of Canine Company and Grave Secret. Sadly, I finished my audio book today, so that is going to drive me crazy waiting two whole days to start another one! =)

message 262: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments I have finished all my current ones. I will just have to behave in the next two days and not start one I cannot finish.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments I'll be finishing up this one sometime tomorrow The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer . After a slow start it's very readable, running at about a 3.5 stars with a quarter to go.

Busy Saturday... so I'll be all ready to start a fresh book on Sunday morning. Really looking forward to starting.

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Ha! I finished Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen yesterday & English Tea Murder today. So now I just hope to finish It before Halloween or before I die. It's like the phone book!!

Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen by Susan Gregg Gilmore English Tea Murder (A Lucy Stone Mystery, #17) by Leslie Meier It by Stephen King

Copying and pasting the FAQ here from the captains group, just FYI

=====

FAQs

◈ Q: Do we need to write reviews for the book to count?
A: No, you just need to have them marked as "read"

◈ Q: Do I post all of my books to a special shelf or just ones as I read?
A: Your choice. Some captains may like just all "read" books on the special shelf, so just check with them once teams are assigned

◈ Q: What does it mean "Participating in a BOM" ? Answering a set or comment? Or do we need to answer all days to get the 20 points? Or is a 20 points per set of questions?
A:Provided you add to the discussion at some stage through the book. It doesn't need to be answering a set of questions if that doesn't appeal to you. You may just pop over and give some thoughts at different stages. It is just one set of points per book. However you do need to interact with others in the BOM thread for it to be considered “participation”.

◈ Q: For page counts, do we use the most popular edition on GR or the edition that we actually read?
    A: Edition you've read.
Default edition will be used for audiobooks and large print editions

◈ Q: If you read a BOM or a buddy read do you get points for the book size (say 5 if's 150 pages) plus additional as its a BOM or buddy read? (Say 30 if it's a buddy read) would equal 35 points? Do I have that right?
A: You get points for page count with or without BR/BOM points. BR/BOM points are extra points.

◈ Q: Do characters in non-fiction books count?
A: Typically no. For example, if it is a historical account of WWII and the story is about Winston Churchill, he is not considered a 'character'.
Exceptions would be something like a memoir, ( e.g. Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness) where someone is recounting events and situations ; then it is possible there would be characters.

◈ Q: Where there are multiple authors, can they be used?
A: If attributed on Goodreads, then yes. For example, Eternity's Wheel. Where it is a book with a collection of stories and Goodreads shows one author as the "editor", then you can only use the editor. (e.g. Dog is My Co-Pilot: Great Writers on the World's Oldest Friendship)

◈ Q:What does it mean "word as genre"?
A: It needs to be on the first page. So when you go to a book - click "see top shelves" and that first page that shows is where you need to find the word as a shelf

◈ Q:How does the "word on cover" actually work? can it be in text or does it have to be an image?
A:It has to be an image, but it can be singular/plural. Some examples:
BONES
A Bone to Pick (Aurora Teagarden, #2) by Charlaine Harris

TOMBSTONE
After Dead What Came Next in the World of Sookie Stackhouse (Sookie Stackhouse, #13.5) by Charlaine Harris

BLOOD
Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) by Kendare Blake

FAMILY
The Kitchen Boy A Novel of the Last Tsar by Robert Alexander

◈ Q: When does each week officially finish?
A: Each week at Saturday 10PM, London Time

◈ Q: What does banked books mean?
A: By banking we mean that you can’t read (finish) a book in week one, and choose to not use it that week and use it the second week instead. (Or subsequent weeks)

You can start a book in week one, finish in week two; and use in week two. (But you can only use it then in week two)
The read date determines what week you must use it.
All books must be started after the challenge begins.

◈ Q: When will the next week's word be given to each team?
A: We don't have exact timing, but 1-2 days before the week finishes

◈ Q: Do books have to be STARTED after the challenge begins?
    A: Yes

◈ Q: Will the October BOMs count for BOM points?
A: We have decided that October BOMs will NOT count for wheelathon seeing that wheelathon starts on 27 October and the last October BOM finishes the reading on the 22nd

◈ Q: What is the rule around what makes a character valid to use?
A: Characters need to have some kind of dialogue and meaning to the story.
So, for example, someone having a cat called 'Meow' that is referred to ; or a character talking about "oh I had an ex-boyfriend called Eric" that we never meet, couldn't be used as characters.

Lexi | 4247 comments I have a question in response, is this challenge giving points for BR or not? I seem to have seen conflicting info on that.

message 269: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I haven't seen anything about buddy reads counting, so I assume they don't. Just the books of the month. But I'm not 100% sure :)

I had a family emergency last night (everyone is fine now) so did not get to start Bruno. Now, I just need to not read for three hours as I finished Hill House.

More importantly, I'm glad everyone is fine Lexi!

Lexi | 4247 comments Do we have a completion post page or just add to spread sheet?

message 287: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments As far as I know, we don't have a completion post page. So two options:
1. Just add to the spreadsheet. Or:
2. Put in this thread and we can add it to the spreadsheet.

Either way, be sure to put your books on your Wheel shelf as well. That will let us double check and be sure we didn't miss anything.

message 288: by Chava (new)

Chava | 1522 comments Can I just ask for someone to add it to the spreadsheet? I have a bad track record with spreadsheets (I deleted a whole section at work once...it wasn't pretty). Thanks.

completion post
Blood Sport
Dick Francis
288 pages
Works for:
Author (D)
Title word
word in text

message 289: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments That's no problem - posting here is great! And yay for reading! I haven't read Dick Francis in a long time - I should re-read some of those.

Hi everyone!

I'm now back from Dubbo. We went there for the weekend mainly to go to the large open plain zoo that is there. It is a 5 hour drive (6 with kids!) so it has been a long day today in the car. Kids had a great time - and so did we - I haven't been there in over 20 years!

I did get to listen to 5 hours of an audio book ; so that is the plus side :)

exactly :)
I didn't ask for a "read books" thread as sometimes I find it just is more confusing. Let's see how we go using the spreadsheet / this thread!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments That's a great family activity, Karen. I've never been there... but maybe I should put it on my "Things to do with the grand kids" list. They love Taronga Zoo.

I've had my first wheelathon bump in the road ;)
I had thought I had an O book on audio from audiobooksync... it was on that shelf... but I can't find it!! I mustn't have actually downloaded it and just added it to goodreads and got distracted. lol

Oh well. I've found another O book which is a bit interesting. It is basically a set of 16 fake biographies. Their Brilliant Careers: The Fantastic Lives of Sixteen Extraordinary Australian Writers.
The author has made up 16 authors and then goes through biographies of those authors. So it is rather tongue-in-cheek. I have no idea why I added it to my tbr - maybe a review in the newspaper.?! Anyhow, it is an easy book to listen to while I busily clean and get ready for a furniture delivery today

Hi Circe - We had you down as 11 books per month. If you could let us know what you think your numbers will be instead? As we need to replace Astrid, if we know how much your numbers are down by that will help with working out replacements
