H.L. Walton | 37 comments Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to Goodreads and this is only the forth group I've joined. Just like to say hello and introduced myself. I am firstly a mother of three and secondly an aspiring author and thirdly an obsessed reader and horrors are up there with my favourite genres to write and read (I love thrillers and mysteries too). Stephen King is my favourite author and I own/have read almost all his books. Can’t wait for Finders Keepers to come out. I’m looking forward to meeting some new people here on Goodreads and also would like to ask everyone, what do you love to read and what are you looking to get out of a book? Thanks for having me and I hope to hear back from some of you soon 

Helen wrote: "I really enjoyed Under The Dome as a book but not too sure about the show though."

Yeah, they're completely different as usually happens.

message 324: by H.L. (new)

H.L. Walton | 37 comments Yeah Kathryn I was pretty disapointed with it. I've liked pretty well all the movies from Kings books (especially the new Carrie) but Under The Dome just didnt live up to the book

message 325: by [deleted user] (new)

My family watches the show and for the most part, enjoys it. However, I had to completely set aside the book so I would't complain the whole time.

message 326: by H.L. (new)

H.L. Walton | 37 comments I watched the entire first season Kathryn just to see where it was going. I think I put my partner through agony the whole time going "but the book is really good and in the book this happens" and "that didn't happen like that in the book" lol

message 327: by [deleted user] (new)

My husband told me before it even started that he wasn't going to listen to me complain every single episode so I was very good. It's my all-time favorite book. I think it's because I just despised some people in that book so much, and I kept asking my husband, "Does so and so get what's coming to them?" He would never tell me anything and I read as fast as possible because I couldn't wait to find out what happened. The thing I don't like about the show is that when a problem comes up, the nice town folk all have a answer, as with the breathable air. In the book, it was all downhill with no remedies for these issues other than death. Plus, the book took place in a matter of a few days, if I remember correctly.

message 328: by H.L. (new)

H.L. Walton | 37 comments Yes it all happened rather quickly in the book. I think the producers of the show just dragged it out to try and milk it for all its worth. Because it is such a long book they proba ly thought they could get away with that. It probably would have done better as a mini serries or two part movie maybe. The stand is also a large book but they didn't do it with that and I liked it :-)

message 329: by [deleted user] (new)

I think they should have made it one season, also.

message 333: by H.L. (new)

H.L. Walton | 37 comments It gets pretty cold sometimes but not as bad as further south. No snow which is a shame. Never seen snow

message 334: by [deleted user] (new)

I was just going to say, too bad we couldn't ship some of that snow elsewhere. Plenty to spare around these parts.

message 335: by H.L. (new)

H.L. Walton | 37 comments Melbourne is heaps colder than where I am. I'm further up North and yeah too bad you can't just ship it this way. You probably get sick of it if you're to it and there's so much of it I guess but it would be lovely to see I think :-)

The Phantom Of The Apiary (bigbearomaha) Aloha from the tropics of Omaha, NE. I joined this group just because I was looking for a group of people in the general are a of interest. Lo and behold, a buddy of mine is in this group too. I hope you don't hold it against him that I showed up here.

I like horror of a wide variety. From Stoker to Frievald and Barker to Koontz.

Imay not instigate a lot of posts, but I'll bee glad to chime in if it's interesting. (yes, I spelled it "bee", I am a beekeeper, beecause...bad puns.

H.L. Walton | 37 comments Hi Bigbearomaha! You sound like a very interesting character :-)

message 339: by The Phantom Of The Apiary (last edited May 30, 2015 07:39PM) (new)

The Phantom Of The Apiary (bigbearomaha) Thank you Helen. That's about as witty as I get, ask Eric.

I will say though, that of all the horror books I have EVER read in my whole lifetime of reading, and that's saying something, I think, the only book that ever scared me into keeping the lights on was "The Amityville Horror". Keep in mind that I was like 14 at the time.

I will dump a book in a heartbeat if it has unnecessary gore or unnecessary sex scenes.

Adding those two things to a book apply to the toilet rule. If it is absolutely necessary to the story, put it in, if it's not absolutely necessary, then we really didn't need to see it.

Maybe it's just me. I dunno.

So Eric, what's for dinner? and don't tell me seafood.

message 340: by H.L. (new)

H.L. Walton | 37 comments Can't say I've read The Amityville Horror but I do think I've seen the movie. I am a huge horror fan but haven't actually read one yet that has truely terrified me. Hoping to find something here on Goodreads that may do that and have had a few reccomendations. We will see :-)

message 341: by H.L. (new)

H.L. Walton | 37 comments Yeah thanks Aaron. A few people have reccomended The Troop. Will certainly be getting my hands on a copy as soon as I can. I'm looking forward to reading it :-)

message 342: by Anna (new)

Anna Runes | 1 comments Hi,
My name is Anna Runes, and I’m a horror addict. (Group response: “Hi, Anna.”)
My introduction to reading novels was my dad’s collection of Tom Swift novels from when he was a kid. Although the series was written for boys, it had kids as heroes, as villains and as every flavor between.
I've loved horror ever since reading my first collection of stories by H. P. Lovecraft. His stories were creepy, but I found an emotional connection that I didn’t find in books written (back then) for young girls.
My next breakthrough in horror was when I discovered Stephen King, although I’m still waiting for him to write The Definitive Ghost Story. Next, one of my teachers in middle school introduced me to Shirley Jackson, and I discovered that scary stories could also be deeply meaningful. For the first time, I wanted to write books, especially ghost stories inhabited by real people with real problems. I’ve just published my first book, but, sadly, there was a period of DECADES between my awakened desire to write horror stories and actually writing one! (I’m a proud member of PA: Procrastinators Anonymous.)
Along with ghosts, I like zombies, vampires, apocalyptic tableaus—pretty much all of it—but only when the stories are well written and focus on people. Yes, the protagonist is in a graveyard, but focus on how she feels, not how the gravestones look.
I’m mostly a lurker, not a commenter, but I look forward to learning from writers and readers here and in my other Goodreads groups.

message 347: by Heather (new)

Heather Porter | 29 comments Hi Everyone!

My name is Heather. I am a huge fan of anything scary! I love the feeling of being creeped out. I obviously love scary movies, and I love to read horror novels. The bloodier the better. My favorite category of books is splatterpunk. I live in a one horse town, in the hills of Ohio. We only have one bookstore in town, and I run it. Small towns are fun because they have the best secrets. I have lived in big cities, but I love the small little hole in the wall towns the best. Thank You for accepting me into your group!

message 348: by Heather (last edited Jun 02, 2015 07:17AM) (new)

Heather Porter | 29 comments Hello!

In horror films I am a classic kind of gal. I love black and white. Vincent Price is my man, and Bette Davis is my lady. I love Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, and Dead Ringer for Bette. And with Vincent I love The Bat, and The Tingler. I am also a big fan of 80's scary movies. Friday the 13th is my favorite horror movie franchise. There is something about the woods, and a machete that gets me excited! I love cheesy scary movies too. The cheesier the better!
In books I love Bryan Smith, Blake Crouch, and J.A. Konrath/Jack Kilborn. They are very graphic, bloody, and uneasy to read. I love them!! Lol. I also like to read Stephen King, I mean who doesn't! Dean Koontz sometimes placates my need for gore. I am always looking for new authors to read. But I am currently on a mission to read everything from Smith, Crouch, and Konrath/Kilborn

The Phantom Of The Apiary (bigbearomaha) OK Eric, now I have an avatar.

H.L. Walton | 37 comments Hi Heather! You sound like my kind of gal. I love to read anything horror and also the majority of the novels/short stories I write are also horror. I also love movies that are terrifying and off the top of my head I think the best one I've seen of late was The Conjuring. Thought that was great. As for books I definitely have to agree with Aaron, Stephen King is my all time favourite author and IT is a GREAT book. I remember seeing the movie as a kid but nothing beats the book. Also I have only read one Dean Koontz book but certainly want to read more
