I really liked The Stand too. Both the book and movie. It's also one of my favourite King books/movie.
There is another move based on a Stephen King, but I cannot remember what it is called. It is about some people who fall to sleep with on a plane or at an airport. When they wake up everyone is gone and it seems like they vanished awhile back. Throughout the film they try to figure out where everyone is and then suddenly hear a high pitched noise which gets louder and louder and it gets nearer to them, then the film ends.
I was sooo into the film and was gutted how it ended because it didn't really explain anything.....

The Langoliers... It's pretty damn good.

That rings a bell. I think I am going to have to read the book for it to make sense.

I think it's more of a short story, maybe a novella, but I liked it for the quiet creepiness. With no one else around how do the people stuck in that situation get help, how do they figure out what happened? King often writes best when he doesn't let a story go on too long or get too bloated.
WendyB wrote: King often writes best when he doesn't let a story go on too long or get too bloated.I agree there. I do find that his pen runs away with at times and write about something totally different, then comes back to the story. I do skip a few paragraphs when he does that. He still creates great books regardless.

Hi, I am so glad there are such scary story fans out there, I will be on here often checking out all things creepy!!
Hey guys!I'm Cath, 25, living in the pretty Montréal. I'm a Professional event planner, model and burlesquer... and of course Book Addict. And if I have one pasion over all others, it's everything that has to do with creepy, horror, gore and dark subjects. So books, movies and everything that is horror culture (I mostly make my photoshoots and burlesque numbers themed around weird/creepy/freak/gore stuff)
So yeah, me in a nutshell :)
Thank you!And this is just the point of the iceberg. I haven't had time to sit down in front of my massive bookshelves and catalog them all :3
Hello everyone. Name is Jarod. A tattoo artist and aspiring writer. I love horror novels, and am currently writing one for the fun-- and hell of it. This looked like an interesting group that seemed to grab my attention, so I wanted to join and introduce myself.
Looking forward to what this group has to offer.

I went to a conference in Costa Rica a few years back. My niece came down and joined me after for a few days of fun (zipline, rafting, snorkel, etc).
So we go whitewater rafting. Keep in mind, the raft carries: my niece (in her thirties), me (in my forties), a couple from Spain in their thirties (who don't speak much English) and a 30-something couple from Toronto. So the youngest person in the boat is our guide, who's 28.
At one point, where the waters were quiet, someone asked our guide, David, what that path on the riverbank was. He said "That's the last chance to get out and head back before we hit the big rapids." I made the banjo sound and everyone, including the Spanish couple with no English, got the joke. Except for David. He was too young to get it.
You know you're getting old when......
Hi hi! My name is Alix and I am addicted to being scared. Whether it's reading, watching a movie/show, or playing a horror game. I love it!I'm located in Halifax NS where there's a lot of maritime ghost stories.
I also really love to write horror and psychological stories as well :)
I'm Taysha from Chicago, and I am obsessed with horror movies, books, and short stories. Probably because the only movies we watched as a kid were horror movies and any kid who cried or got scared would be banished from the TV room into the darkness of their room, so I was forced to like it one way or another. Hello to all!

Maybe that could be a discussion thread in itself! Or by region--we might find that there are similarities across areas (ie every region has that one about the woman walking by the side of the road at night who isn't in the rear view mirror when you look back, etc.)

I'm Matthew from southern California and I'm 34. Ever since I was a kid I've been obsessed with horror and loved everything about the Fall time of year. My parents were pretty strict about not letting me watch rated R movies most of my childhood and I think that only fueled my need to find horror to watch. As a kid I was always finding ways to watch movies like The Shining and Halloween over at a friends house or Evil Dead at 3am on USA Network. Pet Sematary (the movie) freaked me the hell out when I was 8. My favorite horror movies are from the 70's and 80's. I have other interests, but lately I've been obsessed with reading horror especially horror from Valancourt Books. Hello Everyone :)

It's really cool that you strive to write reviews of all the books you read. I hope that more readers will follow your lead. As a writer I know how important reviews are and, on behalf of all writers, I would like to thank you for taking the time to write reviews.
Best,

Hi all! I'm Lydia, from Texas. I joined this group quite a while back and then promptly forgot all about participating. *eek* My busy home life usually makes it hard for me to keep up with groups like this, but I will make the effort to pop in every now and then. I recently took a job in a much more isolated work environment, and I'm craving opportunities to socialize, which is crazy coming from an introvert like me. :0Ok, introduction: I was born and raised in Texas. I have two little monsters at home - 8 years old and 13 months - and I work in a college library. I used to read ALL THE TIME when I was younger, but the responsibilities of life have slowed me down quite a bit. I'm trying to improve my current pace of about 1 book a month.
Since I was a kid, I've always loved spooky books (what my mom would call 'weird' stuff) and I met my author-soul-mate in Stephen King when I was about 18. Although he will always be my first love, I'm hoping to expand my reading horizons; I think I'll get plenty of recommendations from this group. I especially like stories that have a believable characters and realistic scenarios.
Hey all I'm Angie. I haven't been on Goodreads in so long and I saw this invite and couldn't wait to join. I love to read all kinds of stories. Lately I've been reading these rewritten scary stories of the past. I've been introducing my boyfriend's niece to scary stories by reading her "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" by Alvin Schwartz around the campfire this summer.

Hi, I'm Rebecca. The name of the group caught my attention.Besides being a major bookworm, I am an avid movie buff and could quote films all day.
I love to write and would like to pursue a career in it.

I won't give it away. I do however recommend reading the book because it is really good. Whether you read it before or after you finish watching the show, definitely read it :-)
