Karin, kudos to your son! You must be very proud!

Karin Thanks, all :)

idiffer I'm procrastinating. I should be reading my second ever free copy in exchange for review, but it just isn't working out. And I feel so bad for all these new authors. I wanna hug them and say "Your book is pretty bad, but you still deserve love".

message 304: by [deleted user] (new)

That’s why I don’t read new books for review! I hate being critical of books but sometimes they just aren’t right for you and you have to give a bad review.

Lol

I have the same opinion as Heather though all in all I've not been that unlucky with new authors, but I don't read them often. But I also really hated a couple of them because I wasted my time so they don't deserve my love :D

message 306: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 1368 comments I have signed on to Net Galley this year. My biggest problem is that I want to read all the books and don't have the time.
I quite enjoy letting rip with a bad review but I try to be more contructive for Net Galley books.
I have had a few disappointments but they also provided my favourite read this year.

message 307: by idiffer (new)

idiffer @Esther
Well, if you're from Israel like your profile says, then you have another problem - netgalley recently decided to give arcs only to USA citizens + some regions of UK i think.

There are ways round that when you have friends with a permanent address in UK :0)

Isabella | 5 comments Just finished watching Angels and Demons. Contemplating whether or not to read the book now. ^_^

Oh you sneaky devil you)) Good you have that covered.

Diane S ☔ An avid Netgalley reader here. Australia too, idiffer, I'm pretty sure they still get arcs.

Karin After a trying week as a parent (parents have those weeks and I have 3 kids) I'm trying to figure out how excited or worried I should be after my son got an email (he doesn't have email, so all of his college application stuff goes through my emails right now). It's from a trumpet professor from 2 of the schools. He saw my son's prescreen at one, and is asking for him to upload his Acceptd recordings for the other one that doesn't request them. Perhaps this will help him get an audition at the one that requires prescreens, I have no idea. This is an excellent trumpet professor (but then so his his current teacher he has now in high school). Does this mean he's good or not so good?

Joan- You can probably find foam roller demos on YouTube. I took a free class offered by a PT at a doctors office. It's not very complicated. I mostly use it for my back and my legs. Hope you figure it out and get some relief! It is the only way I can crack my back on my own.

I think this is a good news. Maybe he likes how your son plays and wants to give him a chance?

message 316: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I've just come across Kazuo Ishiguro's 2017 Nobel Lecture and am really impressed! Thought I'd share some of my favorite passages:

“If I could go from one passage to the next according to the narrator’s thought associations and drifting memories, I could compose in something like the way an abstract painter might choose to place shapes and colors around a canvas. I could place a scene from two days ago right beside one from twenty years earlier, and ask the reader to ponder the relationship between the two.”

“….that all good stories, never mind how radical or traditional their mode of telling, had to contain relationships that are important to us; that move us, amuse us, anger us, surprise us.”

“If we are to play an important role in this uncertain future, if we are to get the best from writers of today and tomorrow, I believe we must become more diverse. I mean this in two particular senses.

First, we must widen our common literary world to include many more voices from beyond our comfort zones of the elitist first world cultures… Second, we must take great care not to set too narrowly or conservatively our definitions of what constitutes good literature…. In a time of dangerously increasing division, we must listen. Good writing and good reading will break down barriers…..”

I hope to get to The Remains of the Day soon - have recently bumped it up my TBR list.

I hope you will enjoy it! Yes, time flies by!

We will stay here going only to a restaurant with my ex husband and his mother on Christmas day. I don't know what I will do on Christmas Eve. My son will arrive tomorrow and he will stay till the end of January. In fact I cooked some Christmas cookies in these days and I'm sure I will be busy while he is here.

I'll cross my fingers that everyone you have to interact with on Christmas Eve is very nice to you Ruth. I used to have to work the holidays, and it can be a pain. I support on Christmas getting a good rest! :)

message 324: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 1368 comments Well it is an ordinary work day here but it will be quiet because I work with people overseas who will all be on holiday.
New Year on the other hand will be chaos because my colleague has booked a last minute holiday and I will have to cover for her.

message 325: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) I hope you all will spend a great Christmas, if you celebrate. I was supposed to go to my parents' for a family Christmas next Saturday, but I will have to go tomorrow (Thursday) instead, because their cat is dying. It's their cat, but I've always regarded him as mine, too, because I really love him. He suddenly developed symptoms and it appears he has leukemia, so there's nothing to do, because the illness is too far in already. The vet suggested chemo, but it would only give him a couple months more, so my parents are against it, and I agree with them. The cat is 11 years of age, not really old.

Thanks Greg. I would rather work Christmas Eve than Christmas Day (my birthday). I was going to request Christmas night off but I lucked out because it falls on my regularly scheduled night off.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments We've already had one family Christmas, last Sunday, and on Monday will celebrate again as a family but minus one sister who will be with her in-laws. I really miss my parents and my husband at Christmas but my niece and I go as each other's date. This is the last Christmas before my grandniece starts school. Where did those five years go?

Pink Same here Laura! We had our works meal Saturday night, which was nice to socialise with all my new colleagues. Monday was xmas buffet and secret santa exchange and we haven't got through all the food yet! I'm looking forward to Christmas Day and 4 days off, both of my children are working up until xmas eve, so just 2 days off for them, so I'll try to make the most of it!

dely, enjoy your time with your son, I'm sure it will be lovely to see him!

Marina, sorry to hear about your family cat. My oldest is 12 and I dread losing him.

I hope everyone else is enjoying the festive season. 🎄

I didn't use to care much either way about the work gatherings, but these days I really do enjoy those things, I think because I've known some of them so long! Yesterday we just had a pre-Christmas get together lunch with people from my former and my current company. I so loved seeing everyone! :)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Thanks for your hugs and good vibes, everyone. My family cat is really very ill and it's awful to see him like that, I can see that he's suffering a lot.

Other than that, I have taken the whole of next week off, which is a good feeling. I haven't taken a single day off since July, so I really need to be off for some days. I'm spending the holidays with my family, but on the 27th I'm going back home and I hope to spend New Year's Eve with my boyfriend, although we haven't decided on what to do yet.

Happy Holidays to all of you!
