No, because the board was already gone when I went on the balcony. I understood there was one from what the people were saying. I think he managed to go again in the river in those few minutes.

Joan WOW, I am amazed at how calmly the woman on the green towel is just sitting with the boars so close.

I have never, before or since, climbed a tree so nimbly and so quickly. They can do major damage with their tusks. Like many animals now wild in the Australian bush, the boar is not native to our country and do major damage to small wildlife and, of course, the earth with their hooved feet.

One day I couldn't figure out why I was so furious with my husband all day, until I remembered I had dreamt about him doing something truly terrible (and totally out of character).

We have wild boar round here. Most of the wildlife we see in the headlights running across the road. Jackals are very common and we hear their chorus of cries every sunrise and twilight. Also mongeese and porcupine. In other areas they have more deer and gazelles.
The wild boar we see is normally a mum and her stripey piglets but one night we were driving home along the wooded part of the beech road and the cars in front of us just stopped. At first we couldn't figure why until we saw a massive boar on the side of the road debating whether to cross. The car closest-by just waited for the boar to make his move - if the car had collided with that 100kg beast it would have been totalled - and eventually the boar turned back to the forest and we continued on our way.

We also have the additional danger of stray cows. The local farmer has several judgements and restraining orders demanding he keep his cattle in the field but he is related to the mayor and just doesn't care.
A couple of children have been injured running into them on their bikes. We suffered $10,000 damage to our new car when one cow jumped on it but luckily DH came away sufferring only from shock. A couple of our neighbours had encounters that totalled their SUVs and landed them in hospital for weeks.

Usually the people I'm with laugh at me

Over lunch I went through some of my to-read books and discovered something: if you add a book as to-read and later when reading it, accidentally mark currently reading on a different edition of the same book, the to-read book will end up on both lists .. one as to-read but not read and the other read and not to-read!

So I had several duplicate books on my to-read list that I had already read. I cleaned up some of those. Lots of good books on the list I still haven't read though - I just need to remember to actually look at it! :)

You can go into your book list and search for duplicates. You will find the word down on the left hand side. a list shows you your duplicates.

I use my to-read shelf as a library from which to pick interesting books. The books I really plan to read are on my wishlists. BUT I am always moving books from one shelf to another. I also have a maybe shelf and a not-for -me shelf.

I've changed my to read shelf recently and now I only use it for books I already own or have reserved at the library. I have an amazon wishlist where I put books that catch my eye and periodically move stuff off if I have either bought it, got it from the library or changed my mind.

Because it is all on a hill there is a low 'retaining wall' so the pavement and road don't get flooded out in winter. In several places the wall has been turned into large flower beds and the cow was on one of these. Her only way down was to 'jump' the foot or so to the pavement but she ended up in the road and on our car!

Cows on the line can derail a train - that is really dangerous.
We have had a couple of hold-ups when people tried to jump on the line.
On one occasion a woman had escaped from the local mental hospital and was very determined. Our railway security guards are rather young and buff but we were stuck in the middle of a field for several minutes while it took four of them to restrain her.

message 129: by Joan (new)

Joan Esther - a cow in a flower bed by the roadside - seems like you have the beginnings of a children’s book - maybe a cautionary tale about staying in your own field and only crossing the road at crosswalks.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Greg, if you hit a cow or bull at a high speed 90/100kph, you will certainly kill the animal and total your car in the process. It's the weight of the cow/bull which does the damage.

During the five years I was on the coast, the Melboune train hit in excess of seven cows. We also had two suicides who jumped out in front of the train.

I thought so Bette - it must've been amazing luck for the cow to live. My cousin once hit a deer (much smaller and much less weight), and the damage was enormous .. to the deer and the car. :(

The insurance assessor said that going on the relatively 'minor' amount of damage to the car DH must have been going close to 0 MPH when he hit the cow. The Alfa Romeo had excellent brakes.

dely | 5214 comments Yesterday I had a lovely morning. A cousin of mine with his wife and two grandchildren arrived with the cruise ship so I went to the harbor to pick them up and brought them to sightseeing. They live far away so I never see them and I didn't know their grandchildren (they have 8, but only two were travelling with them).

Yes, and it also removed bison, horses etc. As land was corralled and herds stopped migrating so much, the need for these has diminished.

Haha Joan, some remaining Halloween decorations. :)

Ikea is a nightmare to walk through - some of the furniture is a bit rickety and a pain to assemble, but I've been very happy with my sofa and also with my matress. I got the bed frame on sale somewhere else, but the Ikea mattress is good. Ikea also has a free return policy on their mattresses; if you are unhappy for any reason you can return it for a full refund. That was a selling point for me; I was worried I'd get a new mattress home and a week later regret it being too soft or too firm. The return policy took away the stress. :)

idiffer Got out of the house finally. Went for a walk with my friend, had a very good conversation with him. Felt good talk to someone face to face. Got stopped by the cops - routine check, they searched us and let us go. Came home, walked the dog, read a review which touched on rape. Asked the reviewer for recs for non-fiction about rape. Now I need some reading time with the Magisterium series.
