message 2: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments I am alternating between How Firm a Foundation and A Feast for Crows for my mickey's and started The Light Between Oceans that I requested at the library for the group read last year and just got.

On the audio side, i am listening my way through Laurie King's Mary Russell series. i really like them on audio.

message 3: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Reading or Listening rather to Cibola Burn. Motivation is the first 3 books were freaking awesome and this one is too. If you enjoy space opera and want to hang out with the cool kids best pick this series up.

message 4: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I'm reading/listening to Indexing by Seanan McGuire, because I got the Kindle version and audio for a bargain price on a daily deal weeks ago. The reader for the audio is good, and I am enjoying the story, though I like Seanan's other work better. I'm also reading The Islanders by Christopher Priest for another group. It's very odd, science fiction/literature, and very non-linear, but an interesting and unusual puzzle.

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Just finished the 1074 page tome Under the Dome by Stephen King and now
I am reading The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling - another chunkster.

Wish we can get Xtra credit for a 1000+ page book =)

message 9: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments How was Under the Dome Ann?

I started listening to The Year of the Flood yesterday. So far I'm enjoying it although I haven't come across any of the characters from the first book yet. The audio is good but there are hymns sung at various points which vaguely freaks me out!

message 10: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Hope you are enjoying The Casual Vacancy, Anne, it was a 5 stars for me!

Just finished Olive Kitteridge, and really didn't enjoy it. But in any case it will do a good discussion next week in my book club meeting.

I'm reading now Reconstructing Amelia and Blackbirds.

message 11: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3364 comments I'm reading Griftopia: Bubble Machines, Vampire Squids, and the Long Con That Is Breaking America, which is a humorous take on the 2008 financial collapse. It's really informative and easy to understand. I discovered it at this site, where the publisher is offering several audiobooks for free, if anyone's interested:

I'm also reading Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, because I was looking for a comfort read, and enjoying the audio performance for that one as well.

message 12: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments I'm reading 2 books: a classic The Portrait of a Lady for a group-read; and The Book Thief. The last one I like very much. I have only just started the first one, but so far I like it.

I really loved The Casual Vacancy! I have to say, I really love all J.K. Rowling's books! Somehow, they are not books you forget about, once you've finished them (at least not for me)!

I loved Under the Dome! Skipping Halloween - don't want no leathernecks, lol!

@Elsbeth and Sandra

I'm enjoying The Casual Vacancy, but the characters are just awful...I really like Mary and Kay. The little girl that is friend's of Kay's daughter troubles me...I just want to hug that child.

Reading Second Star To The Right by Mary Alice Kruesi - need happy, happy book. Peter Pan still lives! =)

Hope you enjoy it Sandra. Also, what I didn't mention is that it has a nice, unhurried pace to it which, for some reason feels right reading about the 20s, 30s and the 50s. Would love to know how you fare.

message 28: by Kirila (new)

Kirila | 660 comments I am currently reading too many books at once and I waste precious reading time choosing what to read at that moment...

The Book Thief - I am reading it for the chunkster challenge. I have heard so much about it and so far I find it intriguing and I am enjoying it :)

На запад от рая - for the monthly challenge. The book is non-fiction and is composed of a lot of short posts. This makes it easy to read on the way because you can stop anywhere. But because there is no main story to keep me going, it is not a fast read.

Women Don't Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide - another slow to read book. A friend recommended it and I have to admit it's eye-opening. I have to stop after every page and consider how and what has affected my life till now. It's really interesting, but all this thinking is slowing down my reading progress :)

Heidi - one of my favorite children's books. I am rereading it in German in order to practice the language (so far I can only understand children's books).

message 29: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments LOL! I know how you feel, Kirila. Sometimes I do it to myself too. Eventually things sort themselves out and one book takes over while the others wait. Enjoy!

I hope you enjoy The Bees and Travels with Charlie - I loved them, but The Farm gave me the shivers just reading the summary. You and Dem love those kind of books though. :)

message 32: by Neenee (last edited Jul 07, 2014 11:56PM) (new)

Neenee I am reading Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens . I haven't read any Dickens' so I thought this is a good introduction into his works. But this is so tedious. Victorians like to write long and winding books, aren't they?

message 33: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Just finished Reconstructing Amelia that was a great mystery, with a clever plot and an absolutely page turner.

Still working on Blackbirds and I started yesterday The Help by Kathryn Stockett. So far so good.

message 34: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Enjoy The Help Sandra. I absolutely loved it.

message 35: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jul 08, 2014 05:28AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I finished The Name of the Wind on Saturday. THen promptly got incredibly sick. So am trying to start The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle but brain is not allowing me to at the moment properly, have managed about 14 pages in a few days.

Also means I haven't reviewed the Rothfuss book yet. So many things to do...

message 36: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Sorry to hear you're not well. Hope you get better soon. Did you enjoy The Name of the Wind?

message 37: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Thanks Sarah. I'm being a big, fat whinger. It's just a cold, in the middle of the cold season. But it's just one of those colds when you are incredibly aware of every single tooth in your head (ie. my sinuses don't like me). And I only have 24. Can't imagine what it must be like with 32!

I really enjoyed it. His storytelling is amazing. From page one I just wanted to keep on reading. I did get a little bored in the street kid bit, but as soon as that finished I ripped through it. I can definitely see why he has the reputation he does. And ignoring Lexx's "I told you so" smugness, I really should have read it earlier. But you know, book 3 isn't anywhere to be seen yet...

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Sorry to hear you are feeling unwell Rusalka.

I am also in the sick boat, I got taken into hospital on Sunday afternoon (following a near collapse at home) with what turned out to be a severe kidney infection. I had to have quite a few tests and the like done before I was discharged last night. I am on antibiotics for a week and now that they are driving the infection out, I am feeling incredibly sick. I am trying to work my way through A Clash of Kings but my body and brain are seriously not in the mood :(

Thank you Sarah. I've read so many good things about this book! And it has been in my TBR pile for so long...

message 42: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Just finished A Prayer for Owen Meany. This was such a fantastic novel I find myself not knowing what to read next or even what type of book I'm in the mood for. And after hearing Irving's interview in the end still thinking over some of the things that I guess were in the back of my mind while reading but over looked or ignored

message 43: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Rusalka and Lisa, I hope you are both improving rapidly. Rusalka, this might not be the best time to start reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I don't know about you, but when I have a cold it does nothing to improve my memory for names and details in whatever I am reading, and there is a lot of detail to absorb in the early chapters of that book. I had trouble keeping things straight, and had to keep asking my husband (who read it around the same time) questions about who was who and how things fit together.
