Sandra - Enjoyed The Perfume Collector as well - how I experience and remember scents, smells and perfumes will never be the same again!

Mariab | 3059 comments I finished The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England: A Handbook for Visitors to the Fourteenth Century. I was debating between Unholy Night and Doomsday Book for my next reading. I opted for the latter, then I was in "medieval modus" already and it would be another travel book for this month!

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments What did you think of 'The Time Traveller's Guide' Mariab?

I would also be interested to know what you think of 'Doomsday Book'. I have it sitting on my TBR pile. I hope you enjoy it! :)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I gave up on Black Sun Rising and have started reading Grave Mercy instead. Now I have to adjust my chunkster list again.

message 105: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished my audio books. A Far Country and A Stranger in Mayfair. The first one was interesting but sad and then it was over. The second was a wonderful story from the Charles Lenox series. The Skokie Public Library in Skokie, Illinois sent this one for me to listen to on CD. I am going to have to renew The Marriage Plot for the 4th time. I am only half way through the 13 CDs.

I started reading The Book of Life in a Buddy Read with Marnie and put on the brakes at chapter 24 to pick up and re-read A Discovery of Witches. I am reviewing parts of Shadow of Night before I go back to TBoL and my other print books.

Uh... oh I loaded Elmer Gantry on my iPod to listen to while I do yard work. It is narrated by Anthony Heald who also did The Good Earth

Mariab | 3059 comments Like I say in the thread "Any Books in Vacation... etc.", the view from the author about the women's situation in that society is some uncritical and partial. I would recommend there A History of Their Own: Women in Europe from Prehistory to the Present or A History of Women: Silences of the Middle Ages.
The rest is interesting and at times entertaining, and has very intriguing facts.
The attempt to make it look like a real travel guide is a new and fresh approach to the subject.
Perhaps I had too high expectations on this one,
In general I would give it 3*
For a light reading about medieval times I would recommend Horrible Histories: Measly Middle Ages, which is a book for teens and pre-teens, but has an delightful humor and great anecdotes. Or if not, for a slightly more adult reading about the subject, I would recommend Terry Jones' Medieval Lives, wich is humorous too.
Clearly, I had not enough of the Middle Ages yet ;-). I'll post my impressions about Doomsday Book when I finish it.

Hehe, I read quite a few of the 'Horrible Histories' books when I was younger. I loved them! They are a lot of fun to read. I haven't read the Terry Jones book but I did watch the tv documentary series that was based on it and really enjoyed it. Have you seen it?

I absolutely love the medieval period, it is one of my favourite periods of history along with the Tudors :)

I read 'Ivanhoe' last year and thought exactly the same thing. It was a lot easier to read than I thought it would be. I gave it 5 stars in the end. Enjoy Travis!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Sandra wrote: "Wow Cheri! Looks like a full time job! lol"

I already have a full time day job with Intel Corp, but since I gave up watching TV earlier this year, reading and listening to books seems to be all I want to do, besides keeping the weeds down in my yard and garden.

I finished A Discovery of Witches and am about 1/3 along in Shadow of Night. Then, I will go back to The Book of Life. I think I have figured out how to link these into my Chunkster challenge, since they are all chunksters, I just have not updated my list yet.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I know what you mean Cherie I might watch an hour or two of TV a month anymore

Hmm Dem - I'll be reading in it in about a week for a book discussion. I've read mixed reviews - some folks enjoyed it, others didn't. It will be interesting to see which category I'll end up in.

message 117: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments Finished Three Souls. A well-crafted, interesting and engaging book set in pre-World War II China. My review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments I'm starting The Painter which was given to me by a friend as a " must read." Hope she is right.

message 126: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Doomsday book was good more o. The medieval part the time travel was fairly milnor

message 127: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I'm listening to Theft of Swords because Janice made it sound so good, and it'll work for the chunkster. I'm reading Animal Crackers because I saw it at the library, picked it up, and didn't put it back :) It's short stories, the writing is great, and I've been laughing out loud at the third story.

I have to add Doomsday Book to my tbr, especially since I already have the second book,To Say Nothing of the Dog, on there.

Mariab | 3059 comments Travis of NNY wrote: "Doomsday book was good more o. The medieval part the time travel was fairly milnor"

Sorry, Travis, but I have to ask. What is "milnor"? (the disadvantages of having English as 3th. language...)

message 130: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Typo meant minor. Meaning the story wasn't so obsessed with the time travel element to take away from the heart of the story. There was adequate information to explain how the time travel would be accomplished but it wasn't the main aspect of the story. Some authors think you need an education in the science and all the paradoxes with time travel

Let me know what you think of it once you've finished. I have it currently from the library, but I have to read several others before I can tackle it (need to return them to the library sooner).

What? Your post makes no sense. This is for what books you're currently reading - that have been published. If you're here for help or promotion, you're in the wrong place.

Sarah | 18549 comments Looking forward to hearing what you think Travis. I've been holding off but I might read it soon.

message 141: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments So far it's really good Sarah. Again jumping between north and south. Really interesting in the south as we follow a 9 year old girl who was chosen to enter and the training-learning of the dama-tin? (so many things in this series I can't spell) Arlo still has some new tricks up his sleeve as well.

message 142: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments So jealous! I'm thinking I might have to start this sooner. I don't think I can handle hearing how good it is without me actually reading it too!

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Originally as a child I read the chronicles of narnia in publication order. I was thinking of rereading by chronological order not publication . Any thoughts which way is better.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I am starting The Book of You. I am in the mood for a psychological thriller and this one sounds interesting.

Casceil | 2728 comments Travis of NNY wrote: "Originally as a child I read the chronicles of narnia in publication order. I was thinking of rereading by chronological order not publication . Any thoughts which way is better."

I've done both, although the two readings were separated by more than twenty years, which makes comparison difficult. I liked both. I think the choice is probably more a matter of taste and mood than anything else.

message 146: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I started The Fire-Dwellers last night. I had originally tagged this as a selection for my cross Canada tour, but since I never finished that challenge, it's on my personal challenge called left over stew.

Thanks it will be a 20+ year gap for me as well. I'm going to do the chronological order this time but its been to long for me to compare the two when I finish also

message 148: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I read Narnia in all different orders and repeatedly as a kid.

My series listed them chronologically (which is how I read them when I read them back to back instead of my favourite books over and over) wasn't publication date, and wasn't the series order that goodreads lists. It's chronological by the story. I'm guessing that's what you mean Travis? I think it works best, like moving through the history of the place.

Mag Nephew -> tLtWtW -> Horse & his Boy -> Prince Caspian -> VotDT (still my fav) -> Silver Chair -> Last Battle.

Maybe I need to read them again. I only read The Last Battle once for example, and never wanted to read it again. I wonder if it would be better as an adult.

message 149: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yes Rusalka that order you have listed is the one I'm currently going to attempt
I only read through once before and it was tLtWatW then Caspian then Dawn Treader (everyone's favorite) silver chair . horse and boy .magician nephew. last battle

message 150: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I finally finished Grave Mercy and won't be continuing the series.

Next up in audiobook is Inferno
