Put the first in this series on my TBR list and ordered it from the library.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I'm done with The Light in the Ruins by Chris Bohjalian. It's an enjoyable novel that has romance, mystery, and a good description of the events in Italy during WWII. It was really interesting to read about those events. Does any of you know about other historical fiction novel set in the same period and scenario? I only know about A Thread of Grace and I plan to read it soon. But I'd like to read a little more.

I started yesterday One Breath Away by Heather Gudenkauf, and I'm trying to resume Pride and Prejudice.

message 205: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Sandra have you read The Book Thief? It is set during WWII in Germany. It is a 5-star read. I read the book and then re-read it on Audio. It's excellent.

message 206: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I just finished reading Age of Iron which hasn't been released yet and I really enjoyed it. still listening to Harry Potter 1 and Miss Peregrine but I haven't had much bus time recently to listen to them. I am still reading MaddAddam and I've just started Moon Called for the group read which I'm enjoying so much more than Cloud Atlas.

Thanks Debra! :) I will let you know.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Debra, I read it and it is a 5 stars for me too. It's a great book!

I've read many historical fiction novels set during WWII since it is a very interesting period IMO, but most of them where set in Germany, Denmark, Poland, etc. I only read one book set in the Pacific A Pledge of Silence, about the Japanese occupation of Phillippins.

What I am interested in find now is other novel set in Italy during WWII, since I found the events more interesting than I thought.
I have a book in my TBR (can't remember its name now) set in Russia during the war.

Anyway, thank you very much for your suggestion.

message 209: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Is it City of Thieves Sandra, the Russian one? If not, you might be interested.

I don't know of any books set in Italy.

message 210: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Hmmmm... can't think of any others set in Italy. Will let you know if I come up with something.

I found this link. Maybe something for you here.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I really enjoyed Captain Corelli's Mandolin. It's half set in Greece and half in Italy.

message 213: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Sandra, It's WWI in Italy, rather than WWII, but you might try Hemmingway's A Farewell to Arms.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I finished listening to Lover Revealed. *cough* *cough*. I'll be ready to start the toppler tomorrow with Fool Moon.

message 216: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Hi everyone,

Peggy, I was talking about The Bronze Horseman, that it's actually the first in a trilogy, but I added City of Thieves too. Thank you very much.

Cherie, this list is definitively useful. I'll take a look to it. Thank you.

Rusalka and Casceil, I added those two tittle two. Thank you very much.

This group is awesome! Thank you so much!

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The White Princess which was for the chunkster challenge. It was a 3 star read for me.

I am about 176 pages into Blood and Beauty which was a bit slow to start but I am really enjoying it now. I am also starting a non-fiction book, The Plantagenets. I like that period of history and have heard lots of good things about this book so I am looking forward to it.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Liz wrote: "What did you think about Butch, Janice? *ahem*"

My picture of Butch has changed dramatically. I pictured him like a gum shoe detective, nothing too interesting. But that has all changed. :) I don't think I will read all the books. I want to read Vicious's story, and John's, maybe Quinn/Blaylock... oh, and Revenge's story.

I still haven't read The King, but have finished #1-#9. I still love the main stories within each book; however, in the later books, there are just wayyyyy too many side stories, and I found myself skimming a bunch in order to read about the "cool kids".
I really, really, loved John Matthew's book. I didn't think I'd like Butch's or Revenge's, but they both were pretty fab!

message 222: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments I finished The Last Town and must say that as a whole, I liked the series, but this last installment was my least favorite of the 3. It came off a like corny at times, some of the action would appear choreographed or staged if you saw it in a movie (step here, punch there). But if you read the first 2 you must read the last, otherwise how will you know how it ends?

message 223: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Zamorano (memandyme) I'm reading The Mists of Avalon and really enjoying it. I am brand new here so excited to see what the topic of next months book is. My To-read list is seriously huge. I just keep adding to it because garage sale books are my thing right now. 10 cents for a paperback, hell ya.

message 224: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte (caelestial) | 23 comments Mandy, I wish I could find garage sale books. Books are expensive. Money issues! I'll just stick with my library in the meantime. :/

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Welcome Mandy!

message 226: by Justin (new)

Justin | 10 comments A great place to buy books cheap is Second and Charles. They're nation wide and it's very hard to spend over $30 for a basket of books. There's one in Harrisburg and I'm there once a month.

message 227: by Peggy (last edited Aug 10, 2014 05:30AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I finished Dragonfly in Amber. I really enjoyed it, but with these 800+-page books (and this one was almost 1000) I'm often glad when I finally finish it.

Time for something short! Next up is Like Water for Chocolate for the monthly challenge, and it also fits my around-the-world challenge.

message 228: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Look forward to your thoughts on that one. I really enjoyed it.

message 229: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I liked Like Water for Chocolate too. And the movie is good too. I think it one of the most "faithful to the book" movies I have seen.
Hope you enjoy it Peggy.

message 230: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I had no idea there was a movie. To IMDB!

message 231: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Many of my GR-friends read it and they all gave it high ratings, so I'm looking forward to it :) I also didn't know there was a movie.

message 232: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I watched it in 1992, the year it was released (The book was published in 1989).
Oh my... I'm feeling so old...

message 234: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I have finished Doomsday Book and I liked it. For the ones who expect a time-travelers book, I must say it´s more on the "Andromeda" side, and for the ones who look to an "Andromeda" book there is to much time -travel on it.
I enjoyed it nonetheless, because there is very good characters in the story -like Mr. Dunworthy -just the name is pretty great- and Collins, to name only two. And thus I´m reading the second book To Say Nothing of the Dog

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Welcome Mandy. I loved The Mists of Avalon. One day I plan to do a re-read of it.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am continuing to read Chocolat. I started it for my toppler book, but life took an upper hand and I barely had a chance to start, let alone finish. It is a great story so far.
