Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I finished Rise of Empire and will move on to the final omnibus of the series, Heir of Novron, because there are subliminal messages in the audiobook that hypnotise you into reading the whole series non-stop.

message 52: by Marnie (last edited Jul 10, 2014 03:02PM) (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments I am starting The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair. Fingers crossed that it lives up to the hype.

message 53: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I just finished The Crook Factory which was pretty good. Historical espionage book said to be 95% true. Wish in knew something about Ernest Hemingway prior to reading it though. Next up...
Eenue meenie minee moe when I figure that out I'll let you know

This is definitely on my list to read this year (in my challenge plans). I'm so glad to hear you loved it!

message 55: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Sending out good thoughts to you guys, Rusalka and Lisa! Hope you both feel better soon.

message 56: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I started my challenge read Paradigm which I received on NetGalley for review. So far so good . It's a YA dystopian so I'm wondering when the obligatory romance will kick in!

message 57: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments That's funny Sarah as I am in Molly Fyde and the Parsona Rescue which is ya sci fi. Good story and setting. Strong female lead... almost except when she becomes a brain dead googly eyed love sick fool for her pilot partner . Driving me nuts ruining a perfectly good book.

I am fully confident you will love this book as well. It is just a good book.

Ann (ann7258) | 334 comments I am in the middle of reading Cutting for Stone and I'm really enjoying it. I have also just started the audiobook The Inheritance of Loss, AGAIN. I started it a few weeks ago, but couldn't concentrate on it at the time, so I am giving it another go, now that I am on holidays!

message 60: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am trying to listen to A Far Country. This is my 2nd go at it. I never got to it the first time and it expired. It has been on hold and finally came up for me again. All of my audio book selections are in a HOLD que.

This morning I picked up the 3rd Charles Lenox on CD from my library. It came on an InterLibrary loan from Dundee, Illinois, so I am starting The Fleet Street Murders today.

Hurray, you did get more of them!

message 62: by Lisa (last edited Jul 11, 2014 03:04PM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Thanks for the 'get well' messages everyone!

message 63: by Ferenc (new)

Ferenc (rememburn) | 2 comments I just read "The Fault in Our Stars" because it was hyped everywhere and I was really curious. I did not expect this kind of pure astonishment. Now I will probably start reading the Scarlet letter or some other "classic", because I want to be more educated and learned.

message 65: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jul 11, 2014 10:18PM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Welcome Ferenc! I take your comment to mean you really enjoyed The Fault in Our Stars?

message 66: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Welcome Ferenc. I echo Rusalka. I looked at your profile to see how you rated it, and didn't see it in your feed. I enjoyed it, myself.

message 67: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I finished listening to The Year of the Flood which I enjoyed. Now two new audios: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for while I'm out and about and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children for when I'm at home doing the chores. I'm still plodding my way through a chunkster and this months challenge read too.

message 68: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I am currently reading two books for the chunkster challenge, The White Princess which I started yesterday and A Clash of Kings which I am about 50% of the way through.

message 69: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I'm reading How Dogs Love Us: A Neuroscientist and His Adopted Dog Decode the Canine Brain. I picked it up for $2 on a Kindle Deal, which is still in effect. I'm finding it surprisingly engaging. The author is a scientist and dog lover, who became sufficiently curious about how dogs' mental processes work that he trained a dog to voluntarily get into an MRI machine and hold still. I'm less than 20% of the way into the book, but I'm enjoying it.

message 70: by Anne (Booklady) (new)

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments I finished Blue Jeans and Coffee Beans by Joanne DeMaio for Underrated Challenge 1 of 2 books. I have to wait for the other book b4 I post - Rusalka orders.

Now I'm reading The Boy in the Suitcase (Nina Borg, #1) by Lene Kaaberbøl that Delmy selected for me to read for another challenge.

message 71: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments I started The Book of Life (All Souls Trilogy, #3) by Deborah Harkness today. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is more like A Discovery of Witches which I loved and less like Shadow of Night which I thought was just ok.

I'm only 50 pages in but so far so good.

message 72: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte (caelestial) | 23 comments I was juggling too many books at once before so now, I'm slowing down. I end up just focusing on one book anyway in the end.
I'm reading Pride and Prejudice for a buddy read in another group because I've planned on reading it for a long time. Another book I'm reading is Misery by Stephen King because I bought it as a box set of King books and this is my last one!

message 73: by Gavin (new)

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 340 comments I'm reading The Casual Vacancy

That's a very good sign Marnie - I also loved the first one; but the second one not as much.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Lilisa wrote: "That's a very good sign Marnie - I also loved the first one; but the second one not as much...."

I think this has been the case with most people that I have talked to about the two books. I must be the odd person who liked the second book. I thought it was pretty good. Yes, there were some slow parts.

I am really, really looking forward to reading the The Book of Life.

message 76: by Cherie (last edited Jul 16, 2014 03:10PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am listening to The Marriage Plot on CD from the Library. I have had it for over a month and finally started listening to it last weekend. I really like how Jeffrey Eugenides writes stories. I am only about 38% into the story. I have no idea where it is going and am totally along for the ride. The narrator is David Pittu. I have never listened to him before, but I think he is great with this story.

I am also listening to A Far Country and am almost done. This one is on my iPod and I have been listening as I do yard work.

I am also reading two print books.
The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England: A Handbook for Visitors to the Fourteenth Century for the Group read and Tales of Australia: Great Southern Land for the Underratted Challenge.

I read a short story this morning called All Good Socks Go To Heaven. The author is the editor of the short stories about Australia. I found the short story title while I was searching to see what he had written. Don't get your hopes up. There are really no answers, but it was a cute story. 99 cents from Amazon for you Kindle owners. ;)

message 77: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I've had some pretty good luck so far this month. After listening to The Giver (The Giver #1) by Lois Lowry in June, I had to have the whole quartet. So I've listened to Gathering Blue (The Giver #2) by Lois Lowry , Messenger (The Giver #3) by Lois Lowry , and Son (The Giver #4) by Lois Lowry . Although Son had a few discrepancies, I am in awe of this series, and there are parts I still can't let go of yet.

For other groups I've also listened to Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain and The Rosie Project (Don Tillman #1) by Graeme Simsion , both wonderful, but in totally different ways. Lies is serious, in a "how could that be allowed to happen" way, while Rosie is a humorous tale of looking for what you think you want.

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Just finished The Boy in the Suitcase (Nina Borg, #1) by Lene Kaaberbøl - Delmy picked it for me.

Starting Ill Wind (Anna Pigeon, #3) by Nevada Barr for another group challenge.

message 80: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I added The Book of Life and A Stranger in Mayfair to my currently reading list last night. The first because I have waited soooo long and saw that Marnie is reading it and the second because the Skokie Public Library sent it all of the way from Illinois for me to listen to on CD.

message 81: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I've finished a few books in the last couple of days:

The Terror
Cinder
Heir of Novron

I started Missing for our monthly challenge, and because my granddaughter leant me the book.

We'll be starting the sequel to Scarlet on the way home on Sunday.

I second Travis. I listened to it and I was caught up in it right away.

message 85: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished A Clash of Kings for the chunkster challenge. I really enjoyed it and gave it 5 stars. I did find it a little slow at times and didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first one but it was still a great read.

message 86: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Just finished The Help, a beautiful historical fiction.

I'm still reading Pride and Prejudice and starting today The Perfume Collector

message 87: by Dem (new)

Dem | 984 comments Just finished One Plus One One Plus One by Jojo Moyes by JoJo Moyes. This is my review.

message 88: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Finished Sandman Slim which I enjoyed. Kind of read like a comic book. Also finished The Sleeping Doll which I enjoyed until I didn't. What I mean is the author should have quit while he was ahead instead of wanting to throw a few extra twists in the end when the story should have been done. Now reading Lay Down My Sword And Shield which has been real good so far

message 89: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I know exactly what you mean Travis. I have loved books until the last 50 pages. Then for some reason the author tried too hard, and no one told them to pull their head in.

message 90: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments Oh Oh Oh... Sandman Slim. I must add it to my TBR. Aaand the pile is growing O_O. You people are a bad influence

message 91: by Tasha (last edited Jul 19, 2014 03:58PM) (new)

Tasha I'm finishing up Cane River. I love how the author created a story based on her research of her family history. The photos are so wonderful to look at after reading about the people in her story and I'm so touched by the sadness and strength of these women and their family.

message 92: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I too added Sandman Slim - I like the stuck in hell working as a hitman angle!

I finished Red Seas Under Red Skies which was fantastic. From one chunkster (and boat setting) to another now with The Scar. Also started reading MaddAddam to complete the series.

message 93: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments My Grandkids and I start Book 2 in the Lunar Chronicles, Scarlet, tomorrow on our way home.

message 94: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I will be starting The Orenda today for a buddy read.

message 95: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I hope you like it as much as I did!

message 96: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Just finished The Perfume Collector by Kathleen Tessaro. I was happily surprised by this novel. I enjoyed the journey through different places and times, but I especially loved the the journey through scents.

I'll start today The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure.

message 97: by Gavin (new)

message 98: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I started Black Sun Rising today. I've listened about 1-1/2 hours and I seem so disconnected from it. I may have to swap it out for something else.

message 99: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I started The Magic of Recluce I haven't gotten into the magic system yet but I think this is another good fantasy series. I think its 14 books and complete. About time I start a finished fantasy series these authors take too long to write books when you're caught up to them
