No worries at all Sarah. Just thought I would ask. I would definitely be up for doing a spooky buddy read around Halloween too. Shall we have a think over the next few weeks and see what books we can come up with and go from there?

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I just finished Snowblind (at 12:30 this morning). I had mixed feelings about it. If it hadn't bogged down in the middle, I would have liked it a lot more. Gave it 3.5 stars leaning heavily towards the 4.

I will start When Bad Things Happen to Good People tonight. One of the women in my rl book club chose it. Her husband is living with ALS. It wouldn't be my choice to read otherwise, but it will be a good way to support her during this challenging time in her life. It may help me understand, too, why my mom is living a life due to her strokes that she would abhor.

message 304: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Excellent. A spooky halloween read it is then. Definitely have a think about what we could go for.

I'd also be up for a Revival buddy read - loved the last King buddy read! I think it's out mid-November.

Oh and thanks Casceil for the other spooky rec. - added to wishlist!

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Great Sarah! :)

Revival sounds very good. I will probably join in if there is a buddy read for that too.

message 306: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Maybe a bit nearer the time, we could set up a Halloween buddy read thread and we can decide what we want to read - I see Halloween falls on a Friday which is perfect for a start date!

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yup it is out on 11-11-2014. Must have been a different book I looked at yesterday out the 26 of october

I've done my usual and placed an order for it from the library - It's great that you can reserve before a book has even been published. I'm the first one so when their 20 ordered copies come in, I'll get one straight away! Worked really well with Mr. Mercedes.

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Still working on a cozy mystery and a thriller on my currently reading shelf due to my move.

Tomorrow, the last of my stuff will be packed up and put on the U-Haul. Vince wants to hit the road by 6PM! We have 20 hours in the car. =(

Since Muddy Illinois is in a very rural area - I may not have internet nor TV until mid to late September!!!!! I'll truck up Dad's every once a few days to check in here and other groups on GR.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I finished The Alexandria Link and really enjoyed all the intrigue, suspense, surprises, and the historical fiction.

Now I'm almost finished with one my son recommended: Link which is also very intriguing and suspenseful. Archeology folks will really enjoyed this one. Will be finishing it tonight.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm reading The White Nile Diaries to review for netgalley. I'm enjoying it, just wish there was a bit more about the travel and visited places.

I'm now starting In the Land of the Long White Cloud, for the chunkster challenge. I'm looking forward to it because it's set in New Zealand.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I needed something short to listen to and found The Alchemyst and wouldn't you know it is a 1st in Series. It is a little YA, but not too bad. It is pretty interesting after listening about 3 hours last night. It is only 10 hrs long. The narration is by Dennis O'Hare. I haven't looked to see if there are any more available in audio. It is on Overdrive from my library consortium.

The last time I picked a first series book to listen to, only the first two were available on Overdrive and I have had an interesting time requesting them on CD. They have come from all over the country to my library. I just finished #6 and requested #7. I would not have been so dilligent about requesting them but I love the narrator's voice and the way he reads the books.

I have that next to my front door to give to anyone who wants it. If postage didn't cost 4 times the book (otherwise known as normal Australian retail price for a paperback :P) I'd plonk it in the mail for you.

Haha, it's a great book, though.

message 323: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments @ Rusalka - I take it that you did not read it?

I listened another 3 hours tonight (and I know I will regret it in a few more hours) but I was almost done with my puzzle and listened until I was done with it. I am really enjoying it! I can disconnect from my sense of reality and totally revel in the impossible and fantastic. It just makes me laugh when one more mythical creature after another is added to the story. I am even starting to like the main characters. They were pretty iffy at first.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I haven't read it, someone gave it to Lexx. He found it a bit too YA for his tastes. But he read it, not listened. He's more forgiving of books like that that he can listen to while doing other things.

Sarah | 18549 comments I just finished listening to Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children at last! It was up and down for me. Now I'm moving on to the audiobook The Lincoln Lawyer which is the first Michael Connelly book that I have read. His name keeps cropping up and I thought I'd give it a go.

message 339: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments I started reading A Discovery of Witches because it was available through my library for kindle and I wanted to see what all the chatter was about. I don't usually read witch/vampire books and this seems to be a love it or hate it one from the reviews. I'm only 12% into it, but I like the setting, the mention of books and the oddness of it so far.

Roz - I was the same way as well, not a vampire/daemon/witches reader and was rather skeptical. But I really enjoyed it, and read the second Shadow of Night as well. The third came out last month The Book of Life bought it but I'm hoarding it. Went to the author reading as well. Glad you're enjoying A Discovery of Witches.

message 347: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I've pulled a bit of a switcheroo. Yesterday, I started listening to The Wine of Angels for our buddy read. I couldn't follow the story with the narrator's rapid monotone British accent. Normally, I really like audiobooks by British narrators. So I returned the audiobook to Audible and downloaded the Kindle version. I was sad because this meant that I wouldn't be reading The Girl with No Shadow for the buddy read because I have that on trade paperback. I generally have two books on the go - one audio, one print. Two print books would take me a long time and would be too slow to participate in a buddy read.

This morning, it dawned on me that I had another credit because of the return, so I got Girl With No Shadow on audiobook. The audiobook version title is The Lollipop Shoes.

message 348: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Dang! I just realized that The Lollipop Shoes is the abridged version of Girl With No Shadow. So I returned it too. I refuse to listen to the abridged version. I'm going to break my ritual of listening for two hours after I finish work and read the paperback edition instead.

message 349: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm reading In the Land of the Long White Cloud for the chunkster challenge. So far, it's so-so. Not bad enough to quit, but it doesn't call me back to it either. So, this weekend I did a lot of other things besides reading (like crocheting my own bag!)

I hope the book gets better once they get to New Zealand. The writing is also not very great, but it might be due to the book being translated from German.
