March Challenge - Reduce that TBR!

review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I read this series in my teens, then my 20s, and 30s, and .... lol I'm too old to continue! But Dorothy L Sayers was a pivotal part of my love for the English detective story and my parents had the set.

#6. A book involving travel

#7. A book published in 2017

#8. A book by an author from a country you've never visited

#3 Animal on Cover

That is one interesting, funny sounding title! Was it any good?

I've only been reading Agatha Christie before Dorothy L Sayers and find myself comparing the two a lot as I read the first of the Lord Peter Wimsey series. I prefer the former author, but I think I will try more of the latter, particularly since one of my favourite books (To Say Nothing of the Dog) heavily referenced work from both of them. :)

Thanks for the review. I love listening to Clive James but wondered whether or not to read this. I'll make the effort now. Well, I will when I get that far down my list!

Finished
#2. A season in the title – Autumn Manor by Helen Goltz (AA) - 4★
#6. Involving travel – The Amber Trail by M.J. Kelly (AA) - 4★
Reviews still pending for both.
Current reads
#8. By an author from a country you've never visited – Freedom Fighter: One Man's Fight for One Free World by Majed El Shafie - at least, I think the author seems like he comes from countries I haven't visited - somewhere in Asia/the Middle East - but I haven't quite worked out where he comes from yet!
#10. Wartime novel - The House at the Edge of Night by Catherine Banner

Yes. Mum and Dad had all the Agatha Christie's too so I've read them many times too. When I was young I preferred Hercule Poirot but as I got older I definitely became more of a Miss Marple fan. I think that they are quite different writers and I can enjoy both writers still. I haven't read the Connie Willis book but I read your review and put it on my TBR list.

7) A book published in 2017:
Etched in Bone by Anne Bishop
Sad that this series is finally over but I always enjoy Anne Bishop's books.
8) A book by an author from a country you've never visited:
Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs

#5. A bestseller from a genre you don't normally read
Review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Sorry all you GOT lovers. I see the attraction but I just had too many problems with it.

This is where I show my ignorance and possibly foreignness by admitting that I have no idea what's going on in the book half the time. There's very justified anger towards the Australian Government for how they continually mistreat the Indigenous people. There's traumatisation from gang rape. And also pollution? Climate change? Black swans in the swamp? I tried but couldn't fully comprehend.

★★☆☆☆
Rating only shows book compatibility with me: not very compatible at all. Perhaps when my reading taste matures I would be able to understand and enjoy books like this. But for now, I can't foresee myself rereading it.

I have this book on my TBR. I've heard really good things about it, but also confusion, like yours :) I'll let you know where I end up on the scale of things when I've read it!

The writing is undeniably beautiful but felt too deliberate. I actually hope everyone else would love it, because I appreciate the theme of the story a lot. Do let us know how you feel later!

Thanks Brenda. I'm pretty chuffed as it is the first I have actually completed in ages.
I've added another book to take me to the hard level. I've added Middlesex which I have had on my TBR list since 2014. That will feel very satisfying to get it read!

Really great book, but I couldn't quite stretch to 5 stars. I read the reviews before I read it and I think they set my expectations to high, but the story flowed well, some good twists and amazing in-depth characters.
