Vickie (vickievickie) | 76 comments Just finished my first book over the lunch break, #9 first book in a series new to me, Whose Body? by Dorothy L. Sayers (1923), a classic murder mystery and the first of Lord Peter Wimsey. The story alternated between 4 stars and 3 for me; ended on a 3. I will still probably try the sequels.

Whose Body? (Lord Peter Wimsey, #1) by Dorothy L. Sayers

I read this series in my teens, then my 20s, and 30s, and .... lol I'm too old to continue! But Dorothy L Sayers was a pivotal part of my love for the English detective story and my parents had the set.

I've only been reading Agatha Christie before Dorothy L Sayers and find myself comparing the two a lot as I read the first of the Lord Peter Wimsey series. I prefer the former author, but I think I will try more of the latter, particularly since one of my favourite books (To Say Nothing of the Dog) heavily referenced work from both of them. :)

Yes. Mum and Dad had all the Agatha Christie's too so I've read them many times too. When I was young I preferred Hercule Poirot but as I got older I definitely became more of a Miss Marple fan. I think that they are quite different writers and I can enjoy both writers still. I haven't read the Connie Willis book but I read your review and put it on my TBR list.

message 121: by Vickie (new)

Vickie (vickievickie) | 76 comments After quite a bit of struggle, I've finally finished my book for #3 animal on the cover: The Swan Book by Alexis Wright (2013), an Indigenous Australian author. The novel was a Miles Franklin nominee and in the shortlist for the 2014 Stella Prize.

This is where I show my ignorance and possibly foreignness by admitting that I have no idea what's going on in the book half the time. There's very justified anger towards the Australian Government for how they continually mistreat the Indigenous people. There's traumatisation from gang rape. And also pollution? Climate change? Black swans in the swamp? I tried but couldn't fully comprehend.

The Swan Book by Alexis Wright
★★☆☆☆

Rating only shows book compatibility with me: not very compatible at all. Perhaps when my reading taste matures I would be able to understand and enjoy books like this. But for now, I can't foresee myself rereading it.

The writing is undeniably beautiful but felt too deliberate. I actually hope everyone else would love it, because I appreciate the theme of the story a lot. Do let us know how you feel later!
