This 17th book in the series is a prequel that goes back to the eve of WWI. Rutledge is a newly-engaged man.....and a rising detective at Scotland Yard. He investigates a series of murders across England while wrangling with his difficult boss, Superintendent Bowles, and worrying about the oncoming war.
Good, non-traditional cozy. 3 stars.

I am brand new to this group and excited to dive in.
I just finished YOU by Caroline Kepnes. Loved it.
Now starting The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins.
Hope it's as good as I hear!"
Hi Sassy
I loved YOU! Her next book is on my wish list.
Girl On the Train was totally over rated IMO.
I have her new book INTO THE WATER on my TBR.

Really enjoyed it.It was better than Mr.mercedes.
Next is End of watch by SK.Last book in bill hodges trilogy.keep reading:)

Bill,
The crime aside, Simenon provides a glimpse of life on the canals. Not crowded with the tourist rented barges of today, but the working, horse drawn barges of days past. Look forward to your comments.

I'm enjoying that aspect so far, Laurence. It does make for an interesting side story.

I started today I Let You Go. It has pretty good ratings. It has started out a little slow, but I know it is setting up the story. I read one review that they said it had "two parts," and part two is when it picked up.

In this sci-fi novel an archaeologist named Dan Sylveste is studying an extinct race of alien beings called the Amarantin, who mysteriously disappeared 900,000 years ago. Meanwhile, a spaceship crew and an assassin are searching for Dan, each with their own agenda. Imaginative, well-written novel....though a bit overwritten in places. 4 stars.

While I am on a run with my favourite type of books, action packed thrillers!
Again reading one of the many authors who specialise in these great books.
Brad Taylor, is the right man to write this type of books, why you ask?
He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry. Brad served for more than 21 years, retiring as a Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel. During that time he held numerous Infantry and Special Forces positions, including eight years in 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment – Delta where he commanded multiple troops and a squadron. He has conducted operations in support of US national interests in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other classified locations.
The first Pike Logan novel from New York Times bestselling author Brad Taylor.
They call it the Taskforce. Commissioned at the highest level of the U.S. government. Protected from the prying eyes of Congress and the media. Designed to operate outside the bounds of U.S. law. Trained to exist on the ragged edge of human capability.
Pike Logan was the most successful operator on the Taskforce, his instincts and talents unrivaled—until personal tragedy permanently altered his outlook on the world. Pike knows what the rest of the country might not want to admit: The real threat isn't from any nation, any government, any terrorist group. The real threat is one or two men, controlled by ideology, operating independently, in possession of a powerful weapon.
Buried in a stack of intercepted chatter is evidence of two such men. The transcripts are scheduled for analysis in three months. The attack is mere days away. It is their bad luck that they're about to cross paths with Pike Logan. Because Pike Logan has nothing left to lose.
In this book we follow Pike across Central America, Norway, Bosnia as well as America. Along with Pike is a great character Jennifer Cahill, who really add to the story as well as adding humour to the fast paced, action story.
Pike Logan is a tough, appealing hero and I look forward to reading more. Just maybe one star below Brad Thor , Ben Coes and Tom Wood.
But a strong four star.

The first,

The second,

I've just finished The Acid Test by Elmer Mendoza, which I read together with the book before it, Silver Bullets. Very tough going because of the writing style; on the other hand, because it is so difficult, I was forced to stay completely focused and two very good stories came out of these books. Lots of dark humor as well, and the books are what I would consider literary and character intense, despite the fact that they're filled with a lot of action centering around warring cartels in Mexico. Mendoza is known, according to the cover, as the "godfather of narco-lit."

Which one to read first?

definitely Silver Bullets -- not only because of the detective, but the ongoing action in the cartels. But I will say that they are both beyond-challenging to get through -- it took me forever to read both.

Thank you, Nancy. That says a lot given your reading volume.

Yes, well, I need to catch up on the reading that I put on hold while reading them! I'm back to Hargrave again, vol. 2.

The U.S. government wants to control a new group of humans, called brilliants, who are exceptionally gifted. This leads to a terrorist backlash. A government agent, who's a brilliant himself, sets out to hunt down the # 1 extremist. Good story. 3 stars.

I finished Black Water Lilies by Michel Bussi last night. At one point it almost went flying across the room, but it redeemed itself and went on to become one of the more twisty novels I've read lately.
Chris wrote: "Just finished Child 44. Excellent suspense/thriller set in 1950's Russia. Although serial killers of children is not something I like to read about, I was thoroughly engaged in this ..."
Very good book, Chris. I didn't care for book 2 in that series, but Child 44 had me at the edge of my seat.

Welcome! Love to see what you're reading. I'm delving into a new Jonathan Kellerman novel!
