Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10022 comments I finished A Fine Summer's Day A Fine Summer's Day (Inspector Ian Rutledge #17) by Charles Todd by Charles Todd.

This 17th book in the series is a prequel that goes back to the eve of WWI. Rutledge is a newly-engaged man.....and a rising detective at Scotland Yard. He investigates a series of murders across England while wrangling with his difficult boss, Superintendent Bowles, and worrying about the oncoming war.

Good, non-traditional cozy. 3 stars.

Bill,
The crime aside, Simenon provides a glimpse of life on the canals. Not crowded with the tourist rented barges of today, but the working, horse drawn barges of days past. Look forward to your comments.

I'm enjoying that aspect so far, Laurence. It does make for an interesting side story.

Autumn (autumnmemory80) | 374 comments I finished The Doll Maker and I thought it was pretty good! Not the best I have ever read, but good. I am glad that I read it. At first I was confused how all the parts fit together, but it became clear in the end.

I started today I Let You Go. It has pretty good ratings. It has started out a little slow, but I know it is setting up the story. I read one review that they said it had "two parts," and part two is when it picked up.

In this sci-fi novel an archaeologist named Dan Sylveste is studying an extinct race of alien beings called the Amarantin, who mysteriously disappeared 900,000 years ago. Meanwhile, a spaceship crew and an assassin are searching for Dan, each with their own agenda. Imaginative, well-written novel....though a bit overwritten in places. 4 stars.

Sean Peters | 155 comments One Rough Man (Pike Logan, #1) by Brad Taylor

While I am on a run with my favourite type of books, action packed thrillers!

Again reading one of the many authors who specialise in these great books.

Brad Taylor, is the right man to write this type of books, why you ask?

He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry. Brad served for more than 21 years, retiring as a Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel. During that time he held numerous Infantry and Special Forces positions, including eight years in 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment – Delta where he commanded multiple troops and a squadron. He has conducted operations in support of US national interests in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other classified locations.

The first Pike Logan novel from New York Times bestselling author Brad Taylor.

They call it the Taskforce. Commissioned at the highest level of the U.S. government. Protected from the prying eyes of Congress and the media. Designed to operate outside the bounds of U.S. law. Trained to exist on the ragged edge of human capability.

Pike Logan was the most successful operator on the Taskforce, his instincts and talents unrivaled—until personal tragedy permanently altered his outlook on the world. Pike knows what the rest of the country might not want to admit: The real threat isn't from any nation, any government, any terrorist group. The real threat is one or two men, controlled by ideology, operating independently, in possession of a powerful weapon.

Buried in a stack of intercepted chatter is evidence of two such men. The transcripts are scheduled for analysis in three months. The attack is mere days away. It is their bad luck that they're about to cross paths with Pike Logan. Because Pike Logan has nothing left to lose.

In this book we follow Pike across Central America, Norway, Bosnia as well as America. Along with Pike is a great character Jennifer Cahill, who really add to the story as well as adding humour to the fast paced, action story.

Pike Logan is a tough, appealing hero and I look forward to reading more. Just maybe one star below Brad Thor , Ben Coes and Tom Wood.

But a strong four star.

Theresa (hollies) Hi, I've just joined. My current read is The Crow Trap by Ann Cleeves set in the North East of England. This year has been so busy that I've read very little and I hope this book will get me back into the swing of things. So far I especially enjoy the depiction of the Northumberland countryside as it similar to where I live, which is not that far away.

I've just finished The Acid Test by Elmer Mendoza, which I read together with the book before it, Silver Bullets. Very tough going because of the writing style; on the other hand, because it is so difficult, I was forced to stay completely focused and two very good stories came out of these books. Lots of dark humor as well, and the books are what I would consider literary and character intense, despite the fact that they're filled with a lot of action centering around warring cartels in Mexico. Mendoza is known, according to the cover, as the "godfather of narco-lit."

definitely Silver Bullets -- not only because of the detective, but the ongoing action in the cartels. But I will say that they are both beyond-challenging to get through -- it took me forever to read both.
