Thanks Brenda, my reading has really slowed down since I went back to work. I have a flight to and from Canberra coming up so hope to cram in a bit more to complete the October and spring challenges.

Owl, do you use a dedicated ereader ie actual Kindle or the Kindle app on a tablet? I find I cant read on my tablet much (I will persist with a library book) but I can read along time on my Kindle (Voyage) Makes a huge difference.

I use a Samsung tablet for Nook, Marlin. Do you think an ereader device would make a difference enough to be worth the cost? =o)

E-Readers have different lighting to tablets etc I believe & are supposed to be easier on your eyes. So if you read a lot of e-books Owl, a Kindle or something similar might definitely be worth at least a look at.

Absolutely Owl, tablets are what they call 'backlit' and dedicated ereaders are 'frontlit', so the lighting is different. Ereaders are better to read in the sun as well.

If you decide to consider one, I'd suggest one that has an inbuilt light. My Kindle goes everywhere with me.....

Sally906 | 87 comments I currently have two main books on the go - nothing original there - but what is truly amazing - and I didn't click until my lunch break today - as that the female MC in both books is called Zoe!!!!!!

I am reading:

Dead Man Talking (The Happily Everlasting Series, #1) by Jana Deleon Dead Man Talking by Jana Deleon

and

Two Steps Forward by Graeme Simsion Two Steps Forward by Graeme Simsion and Anne Buist

BOTH called ZOE!!!! Amazing.

Also both books have wonderfully bright covers!!!

Thank you so much for the info about ereaders, Marlin and Zoey!

I am not a big fan of ebooks as I prefer a book books but I think that part of my aversion to them is because of the headaches.
By an inbuilt light do you mean like the one that adjusts automatically to different levels of light like the voyage has, Marlin?

I'll definitely look into them. =o)

message 1868: by Carolyn (last edited Oct 22, 2017 10:45PM) (new)

Carolyn | 9836 comments I'm reading The Fire Child by S.K. Tremayne on my kindle, an excellent psychological thriller, almost Gothic in it's setting on the edge of the Cornish moors next to abandoned tin mines and soaring cliffs. A new favourite author for me!

Also struggling slowly through Half Wild by Pip Smith as my bedtime paperback for the last three weeks. It's a fictional account of Eugenia Falleni, a woman who lived as a man in the early 1900s, married and was accused of murdering her/his wife. Loved the first section imagining her childhood in NZ but the second section feels disjointed and jumps around in time with too many voices. I'm finally moving into the final section where he/she is being tried so hopefully it will get better again.

I read on both a kindle and tablet (iPad) Owl, but prefer the kindle because of the better lighting and use it mainly for longer reading sessions. It doesn't tire my eyes out as much as the tablet which is a bit glarey.

It's probably not the best book to be reading for short sessions just before going to sleep. Might be less confusing read over a shorter time!

I don't have a Kindle or other dedicated e-reader myself, so I could be wrong, and it may not be the same in America, but here in Australia, I believe that the Kindle Fire is the only Kindle that you can borrow library e-books with using Overdrive or EBL books (no idea what EBL is so don't ask!). Or so my library's e-books page says... So it might pay to check it out if you intend to use it for borrowing library e-books, Li'l Owl.

Li'l Owl | 2504 comments I want to thank everyone for helping me solve my ebook problem!
I did a rough calculation on how much $ all my un-read ebooks are on my Kindle shelf and came out as being over two times more than the cost of a new Kindle Paperwhite with cover and warranty. So it is absolutely worth getting one.

Thanks to Marlin, Zoey, Carolyn, Brenda, Kathryn, Sally for your help. (I hope I didn't miss anyone)
I'll be reading my ebooks headache free in no time!

xxx xxx

Can't believe the great timing that they have just started their 10th Anniversary sale on all Kindles which started the day after we started were discussing this.

Li'l Owl | 2504 comments Currently reading Bird Box by Josh Malerman

Nearly half way through but not sure if I'm going to continue. It's not overly terrifying yet it's like a constant fear of the unknown. It's not that that's bothering me and it's written well but ...

Something has taken over the world. If you see it it makes you homicidal then suicidal so very few people are alive still. You can't go outside or see anything part of the outdoors without being blindfolded and all light from outside has to be totally blocked out. I'm becoming more and more claustrophobic though so may have to call it quits.
