Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I obsess over meal planning/recipes almost as much as I do books and reading. I do monthly menus (months in advance) and post them on the fridge. All menus are subject to change without advance notice. If you don't care for that night's selection, please make other arrangements for yourself. My family is used to this already. I do LOCUN and EMFHN every week, too. That's leftover clean-up night and every man for himself night. My 2 favorites! :)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments I've updated the Spreadsheet with things I've read in the last week :)

All this talk about baking makes me want some nice fresh cookies! And tiramisu. And apple crumble.

Lauri, your happiness is infectious :)

Also, I'm almost finished Hounded (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne so that'll be ready for the werewolf detour :)

Hahaha that's how you do it Laila Jane! Congrats on your upcoming wedding :) Hope you're not getting too stressed with the prep for it!

Wow that's amazing!! My hubby & I try to do food prep for the work-week and we're not even that good at that :P We do it 1 week then don't do the next. I was too lazy today so since I'm taking tomorrow off, I'll be cooking for most of the day tomorrow. Fun times!

message 355: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Well, after I've obsessed over it and printed it out and posted it up, I don't have to think about it anymore. I'm set upon my charted course. Then if I get sick, or if I'm just not feelin' it any day, the disclaimer takes care of it all.

Told ya, selectively OCD

Kazen I finished Hounded (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne and really liked it - thanks for the rec, Karen! I ended up giving it three stars because it got info dump-y in spots, but I can totally see the next book getting four stars now that the world is set up. And yes, it's already on hold at the library, why do you ask? ;)

eta: Oh, and it's my werewolf book, so double yea! :D

That's on my TBR list. I'm excited to get to that one!

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments New Goodreads layout!

Illuminae is on my TBR list too!

And I have about 40 pages left of Hounded but nevertheless I'm picking up the next book from the library today :)

Also add Lilac Wedding in Dry Creek 2/6 for L in Salalah spellout.

Thanks :)

So I read The Happy Prince and Other Stories by Oscar Wilde which will work for the detour of a character living in a castle.
The book hasn't fared well over time, but I'm glad I finally read it

I just realized I never responded to this. Thanks Cathy! I've actually been enjoying the wedding planning so far. We'll see how long it lasts. Everyone keeps telling me I'll change my find the closer we get to the wedding lol

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I'm about halfway through my D book for CANADA spellout.
Should finish by Saturday at the latest.

The Dark and Hollow Places The Dark and Hollow Places (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #3) by Carrie Ryan

message 366: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments No worries Laila Jane :) Enjoy it while it lasts! Weddings are a lot of work but as long as you have help, it should be okay!

I think we're almost done with this week's tasks...but can't tell for sure.

I did a brief stint as a wedding coordinator -- less than 2 years. I cranked out about a dozen weddings and a few smaller parties/events. My husband said I was too bossy:). Imagine that...
I stopped because I couldn't handle the mothers of the brides!

Hahaha too bossy he says? You are in the ideal location for that though. I actually got married in Hawaii a couple years ago. Maui - my picture is from my wedding. I loved it! It was awesome - not too much stress, no big wedding party or anything (just ceremony & dinner). We just took everyone out to a luau and snorkeling a couple days before, and dinner every night. There were about 20 friends/family there. It was super fun & relaxing!

One of my best friend's is actually getting married in Hawaii summer 2017. I've never been, so it'll be my first opportunity to visit. I'm excited! It'll be a gorgeous wedding.

I wish we could get away with a small wedding, but that was never even an option. We've got 8 bridesmaids and 8 groomsmen. We tried to aim for 125 guests, but now it looks like it'll be between 150-200. Which I guess isn't too bad, considering that when we first starting working on guest lists we had 400 people on there (fiance's fault - he added every single person he knew)! I thought I would have to worry about my mom being difficult, mainly because all my friends that have gotten married had issues with their moms, but mine thankfully has been really great. And my bridesmaids have all been super helpful as well. Yay to no drama!

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I actually had to slap one bride because she was having a meltdown. What's worse was she's my friend (still is) and I was the matron of honor!

We got married in Fiji. Similar to Cathy, it was just a small no stress wedding with about 20 family members. It was awesome not justg to have the wedding there with them, but also to hang out with everyone at the resort for a week. :)

When is your wedding Laila Jane? I'm sure it will be amazing

I just updated our tracking to check, and looks like just Lauri's book to go. We can't move until the 27th anyhow, so looks like perfect timing for her to finish :)

Next stop is detour:
"Read a book where a character lives in a castle or palace"

message 374: by Kazen (new)

Kazen Laila Jane - My first time to Hawaii was for a friend's wedding and we had the most amazing time. I'm sure you'll love it! If you're in Honolulu I recommend the snorkeling at Hanauma Bay - I nearly swam into a huge sea turtle! So many fish, so pretty.

It looks like I avoided a lot of drama by planning my wedding literally half a world away from my mom! My parents came to Japan for it, of course, but were blissfully not involved in any of the prep. ;)

message 375: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Our wedding will be on Aug 19. Wow, you guys have all gotten married in such exotic locations (compared to Chicago). I can just imagine how fun and relaxing that must have been. And I bet your wedding pictures were all just gorgeous from the locations alone =)

My friend hasn't decided on which island she'll have her wedding, but if it's in Honolulu, I'll keep the snorkeling in mind. Thanks Kazen!

message 376: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Wedding planning as a job would be so stressful just because of the intense brides and their mothers!

Glad you've had no drama Laila Jane! Not long to go now either :)

I'm just sitting here picturing my life as a future crazy dog lady while you all talk about your weddings :) lol I'm 22 and not fussed about getting married, and have a lovely partner who I live with, but I really would like a dog lol.

Glad our tasks are going well :) I've read one book that counts for living in a castle, and will be finishing another that fits that in a few days anyway.

message 377: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments You guys are all pretty hilarious! I was married in Hawaii (big surprise there!) Not at all exotic for me... I got married in 1989! Yes, I am OLD! HAHAHAHA!! We did the whole Catholic church thing with a ginormous reception in a Waikiki hotel. My mom offered to pay for the whole thing IF we'd agree to go to Vegas. We were too dumb to take her up on her offer & went into debt for years. I don't know what I was thinking....

But I really should finish my book by tomorrow. Promise!

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Jess - Dogs are the best! We have a basset hound named Thomas. Best decision we ever made =)

Delitealex - I'm adding your book now

message 381: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments You are all making me jealous now! First desserts, now dogs. I grew up surrounded by all kinds of animals for pets. Now I live in a tiny apartment and we aren't allowed any pets! Not even a cat... Sigh. Someday I'd like at least 2 dogs and a cat. Medium-sized mutts are my personal weakness.
Bassett hounds are adorable!

What kind do you have, Jess? And how many? I believe you need at least a dozen to qualify for crazy dog lady...

message 382: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Basset hounds are super cute!

Lauri, I don't have any at the moment because I'm in an apartment too. You can actually have a dog here, but only up to 10kg in weight so that rules out most dogs. Plus we're only definitely here until June. My dream house has heaps of land for dogs to run around on, and a couple of horses and cows and stuff too! Haha.

I'm a fan of big dogs! I'd love a Dobermann, Great Dane, German shepherd, Rottweiler, borzoi, greyhound... But really I don't care as long as it's a gorgeous doggy <3 haha.

message 383: by Lauri (last edited Feb 27, 2016 05:11PM) (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Yeah, I know what you mean, Jess. I had a horse as a child, but now it's just too expensive. I still dream about puppies, though...

I finished my book! So now we can depart Canada, right?

Could someone add it to the spreadsheet for me, please?

Great!

Here we go. Welcome ladies to Port-au-Prince

Read a book where a character lives in a castle or palace

- 5 of us already have read a book for this one, so we just need to read 'any' book this week. Lauri, Laila Jane and Drishti - just 2 of you need to meet the goal for us to get max. points

message 385: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Has anyone read Red Queen (Red Queen, #1) by Victoria Aveyard ? I'd like to use this one for the castle task. The summary states that the main character works at a palace, but does anyone know if she lives there?

Yes it would count Laila Jane. :)

message 387: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Okay, I'm starting this one on March 1

message 388: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I am 300 pages in on The Queen of the Tearling

The MC lives in the Keep which is just another word for castle, right? Does it count, Karen?

If so, I should finish by Wednesday! I'm also starting 'The Abbey' which will give us another A for Salalah. Are we still doing the detour for rebellion? Got one for that, too. :)

Keep definition:
3.the strongest or central tower of a castle, acting as a final refuge.
synonyms: fortress, fort, stronghold, tower, donjon, castle, citadel, bastion, fortification....

Works for me Lauri!

message 390: by Drishti (new)

Drishti (drishti_ohri) | 1047 comments I have actually read a book, Heir of Fire which works for the castle detour. But, by mistake, I added it to the 'Our Books' tab. I've now added it to the 'Tracking' tab too. :)

I'll add yours too Delitealex!

message 396: by Kazen (new)

Kazen Hi guys - I hope everyone is having a great week!

I was wondering what you guys think about a book I just read for the resistance to a regime goal. The book is Factory Girls: From Village to City in a Changing China, and while rebellion isn't a main theme she does cover the history in and around WWII. She talks about what her family was doing to resist when the Japanese army rolled in, and later how her grandfather resisted the new Communist regime and was killed (with bayonets!) as a result. Thanks in advance! :)

message 397: by Drishti (new)

Drishti (drishti_ohri) | 1047 comments I'm having some issues with my laptop. So, could one of you please add Stray (Touchstone, #1) by Andrea K. Höst to the spreadsheet for me? Finished on 3/2. Thanks in advance!

Kazen, I think that book would work for rebellion or resistance to a regime. I think it's not mentioned that the rebellion has to be the main theme. :-)

message 398: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Kazen - I would think that book would work. Let's wait to see what Karen says.

Drishti - I'll add your book to the spreadsheet.
