That's another series I've been wanting to read forever but just never got to! Glad you enjoyed it :)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Started my yellow text book but I'm listening to the audiobook since it was on KU. Should finish it some time this weekend -

Wreckage by Emily Bleeker

message 53: by Kazen (new)

Kazen I started my yellow text (audio)book Come as You Are The Surprising New Science that Will Transform Your Sex Life by Emily Nagoski and I'm liking it! I actually have a couple of nonfiction books going so I'll be chipping away at it. :)

Now I just want to binge read the rest of the series :o
Must pace myself!
It is just as good as Harry Dresden, actually probably more accessible than HD as the books are short, and (well at least the first one) wasn't as fight heavy as Dresden

message 55: by Kazen (new)

Kazen Hounded is on my TBR, too! In fact, it may have just moved up a couple of slots :)

:D I love being an enabler!
I just got my husband to read it too, (massive HD fan) and he also really liked it. Good amount of humour and an interesting world ; lots of Celtic mythology so I felt like I was learning something too.. haha

message 57: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 3990 comments I've been wanting to read Hounded I will probably try the audiobook soon.

The US narrator was pretty good, but he made the dog sound kind of Chinese (odd for an Irish wolfhound!) ;)

Hahaha I want to get the audio just for that :D

And those're big words comparing it to Harry Dresden. I LOVELOVELOVE Dresden Files!!!! Will def need to try to fit that series in (at least the 1st one) in February!

So what are everyone's plans for the weekend? We had a friend over for dinner tonight (Fri) and then up the coast tomorrow for time with a group of small friends and all our kids. Sunday we have some family over.

This weekend I'm going to catch up on all my reviews. I'm halfway through one book and I also need to read two others for a January challenge. Fortunately, one of those has yellow text on the cover. Plus, I have a lot of studying to do too. Exams are coming up in the end of February! In nutshell, it is going to be a crazy weekend!

What are you studying Drishti?

I'm still in grade-9 (US translation: freshman in high school). So, unfortunately, I have to study all the subjects including those I despise. End-of-term exams are there in February, so I have a long list prepared of things I need to revise. Though I am still trying to decide what to start with. Someone help me!

message 66: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Sounds like fun, Karen!

Drishti, oh man having to do all the subjects was so bad, you won't know yourself when you get to actually pick things you enjoy! (Or nothing at all - which I imagine would also be a relief, haha)

(That said, some things you can't escape from. I was so excited at the thought of leaving English behind, and not having to write essays based on a quote etc after I finished high school, but I have to get my skills back up for the medicine admissions test in a month's time which has two essays! Lol)

I'm having a friend over tomorrow to continue our Harry Potter movie marathon turned drinking game, and doing a bit of shopping on Sunday, so a nice relaxing weekend ahead for me :)

I also just finished Pet Sematary by Stephen King
Unrelated to this challenge but I really enjoyed it :)

A HARRY POTTER MOVIE MARATHON! You guys are making me jealous now!

Kazen Jess wrote: " I have to get my skills back up for the medicine admissions test in a month's time which has two essays!"

Yeaa medical people! I'm a Japanese-English medical interpreter :) Is that a test to get into medical school? I wish you so much luck! Essays, ick. ;)

message 69: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Drishti, we've got the last four movies to go! I'm excited because my partner hasn't even seen the last three :O

Kazen, that's a really interesting sounding job! There's enough terms to learn in one language, surely! ;) and yes, a test to determine whether I get an interview with a medical school, anyway. Thanks! :)

message 70: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments I love medical interpreters! I'm a nurse, so you guys come in really handy =)

It's Restaurant Week here in Chicago, so me and my friends are having dinner tonight and brunch tomorrow to some restaurants we wouldn't be able to afford otherwise. Other than that I'm spending the weekend working. And somewhere in there I'm trying to finish at least one more book before January ends.

message 71: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Good luck Drishti and Jess! I definitely don't miss essays and exams one bit

message 72: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 3990 comments Nothing much going on for me this weekend I'm going to a bookstore to treat myself for my birthday and maybe go out to dinner.

Good luck Drishti!

Harry Potter movie marathon - awesome! I recently re-watched all the movies and started re-reading the books :)

Laila Jane ; that sounds very cool. I imagine Chicago is a bit chilly at the moment?! :o

haha Lauri, that doesn't sound boring. I'd love a few days of relaxation and reading!!

message 76: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments My plans are just to read! I actually took the day off to catch up on my reading since I didn't finish my January challenge books yet...though I haven't read much today since I've been updating goals here on GR.

I've been trying to re-read the HP books (only got through #1 so far). That is still 1 of my favorite series. It was one of the first series I read a couple years ago, and started my love of books and reading.

I feel for you Drishti...I do NOT miss studying at all. Good luck on your exams!

So I've added an "Our Books" tab to our spreadsheet here

Each column gives the detour/task country/task letters that we have possible for stops 2-8 of the challenge.
So if you read a book that doesn't count for "yellow text on cover", feel free to add your book here and just mark in where it may count for later detours/tasks. This can help if you have a memory like mine (woeful); and also to help us decide if we want to do a task or detour (as we will see what we have potentially already covered)
:)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments That's great Karen! Thanks for putting that together!

Drishti (drishti_ohri) | 1047 comments Catch and Lauri, it's so good that you guys are gonna read the whole weekend. I'm running out of time. Amidst all the studying I have to do, I'm losing hopes of completing my books for a January challenge.

Kazen Laila Jane - And I love nurses! Always so helpful when I have random questions. :)

Huzzah Chicago! I visited for the first time this year and loved it. We wish we set more time aside for the Museum of Science and Industry - my husband spent over an hour gawking at the U-boat alone. ;)

Delitealex - Happy birthday! Books and dinner beats a movie and dinner any day. But I'm biased, hehe.

Lauri - Yeaaa medically-adjacent people! :) I can never seem to stuff enough vocab in my head, and do resort to English Wikipedia quite often while I'm studying. Even in one language it's like trying to drink from a fire hose!

Karen - The Our Books tab is awesome, thank you! For some reason I didn't realize that we could use character/author/narrator names for these spell-it-outs and I love it. :)

message 83: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Delitealex - Happy birthday!

Karen - Thanks so much for making the spreadsheet! That'll make things so much easier to manage. And yes, Chicago is chilly but at least we didn't get hit by the blizzard that hit the northeast, at least not yet =)

Kazen - I've lived in Chicago pretty much my whole life and no matter how many times I say I want to go visit the Museum of Science and Industry the last time I've been there was when I was in elementary school. They had the Harry Potter exhibit there for a year or so and I never got the chance to visit.

Cathy and Lauri - So jealous you get to spend the weekend just reading. I swear, sometimes I'd rather do that than go out!

message 84: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Oops I missed that.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DELITEALEX! Hope you have a wonderful one!!

Actually have been busier than I thought. Dang laundry...And the hubby and I have decided to try the food prep thing again - spending Sunday prepping the food for the week so that we eat healthier again. It's so time consuming planning a menu and prepping everything. I suck in the kitchen so it always takes me forever!

message 85: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Happy birthday Delitealex!

Harry Potter movie marathon is complete but I got no reading done yesterday as a result :( have to make up for it today!

Also, it's funny there's so many medical field people here considering it's such a small group!

message 86: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments I thought so too :P

Okay so I finished a book that doesn't work for this week's task so I added to the "Our Books" tab. Hopefully I did that right!

message 87: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Happy Birthday, Delitealex! May all your books be big ones!
City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #3) by Cassandra Clare
I just finished 'City of Glass' by Cassandra Clare and it was awesome. Love reading in bed. Too bad it doesn't count for this challenge. :) Working on my yellow text book now.
Have a lovely weekend, everyone

message 88: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Finished Secrets of a Summer Night (Wallflowers, #1) by Lisa Kleypas and added it to the spreadsheet.

Also, didn't realize this til I was filling out the spreadsheet that Oman is one of the countries we're visiting. So excited for that one just because I was born there!

message 89: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Lauri, reading in bed is the best!

Laila Jane, that's really cool that Oman is there then! They're all new places for me :) I have travelled very little, lol.

Happy Birthday, Delitealex!

Oh that's pretty cool Laila Jane :)
I didn't look too hard at our countries until I did that spreadsheet either. I've been to only 3 of the 7 (Russia, USA and Canada), so I may just learn something about the others during this challenge!

message 91: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I haven't really been anywhere outside the U.S. -- except to Mexico when I was a little girl. It's so funny that everybody wants to visit Hawaii. The people who live here can't wait to leave! We get what is known as 'Rock Fever.' That's a persistent desire to get off the island.
I'm about 100 pages into my yellow book. I finished two others that, of course, don't count for this challenge...
The Horsemasters (Reindeer Hunters, #2) by Joan Wolf The Blue Afternoon by William Boyd

I've only ever been to the airport at Hawaii. I always thought of stopping there on the way home one day, but it just never worked out.
I travelled quite alot until we had kids (my eldest is just over 3 now), and our holiday of choice is now Fiji as it is not too long of a flight and it is a great place to go with small kids.

message 94: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Also finished Resolution (Swept Away) by J.S. Cooper for yellow text. Quick read, but not a good book. Actually not a good series in general. The characters were so stupid and inconsistent, but I was interested in the mystery enough to want to find out what happened next.

message 95: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16613 comments Mod
Well done! I can't deal with poor characters - good for you for pushing through!
I have about 3 hours of audio left for my yellow text book

message 96: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Finished my yellow text book yesterday - Wreckage by Emily Bleeker . It was a little predictable and wished the ending was different but overall was an okay read.

Also just finished Magic Rises (Kate Daniels, #6) by Ilona Andrews which I needed to finish for another challenge and didn't realize also has yellow text! I'll use it for the werewolf task if we decide to go with that detour, or one of the letters because this one had a ton of characters in it!

Awesome Cathy!
I finished by book with yellow text
Black Rabbit Hall by Eve Chase
and added it to the s/sheet.
I'm starting Hexed (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #2) by Kevin Hearne and Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll next. One should have a werewolf and the other is mystery if we do those detours ;)

message 98: by Kazen (last edited Feb 02, 2016 03:58PM) (new)

Kazen I started it too early for this challenge but I finished Whipping Girl A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity by Julia Serano yesterday. I learned so much! Great if anyone is interested in gender issues.

message 99: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments You guys are making me look bad! Good going!
I should finish my yellow text book tonite or tomw... Got my mystery ready to roll and a book published in December & have ordered my werewolf book. Which city/country do you think we'll end up spelling out??

message 100: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Moving straight on to another yellow text book Karen! Lol

Lauri, I know right! I'll finish my yellow text tonight or tomorrow as well though :)
