NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments Your itinerary is here

When you have a team name, just let me know and I'll update this thread name :)

First stop - Kagoshima (Japan)

Oh my goodness that is so pretty.

Hi everyone! *waves*

Any ideas for a team name?

message 5: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 3990 comments Hey team I'm really bad at thinking of names. How about Readers on Walkabout or Wandering Bibliophiles?

message 6: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16613 comments Mod
How can you say you're really bad? Great ideas!

I love Wandering Bibliophiles :)

message 7: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Hi!

Japan looks super pretty, I think we're starting our trip off quite nicely :)

I'm not good with names lol but happy to hear suggestions!

I look forward to getting to know you all through our books! :)

message 8: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Wandering Bilbiophiles sounds good :)

message 9: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Hello everyone! Those are both great names - you aren't bad of thinking up them at all! I like them! And this sure looks fun :)

message 10: by Drishti (new)

Drishti (drishti_ohri) | 1047 comments Hi, team! :-)

Well done, Delitaleax! Wandering Bibliophiles is a great name!

NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments So just to get you started...

Your first stop is Kagoshima, Japan.

You can choose as a team to:
TASK
- Read books set in Japan, or by Japanese authors or
- Do a spell-it-out of Kagoshima or Japan

OR
You can elect to do the detour, which for this stop, means that four of you need to "Read a book with yellow text on the cover"

message 12: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments I'm happy with Japanese author/setting or spell it out :)
I'd have to check to see if I have a book with yellow text on the cover but I mean surely at least one in 500 will, that's not much to ask, haha.

message 13: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Hi everyone! I love that Japan is our first stop, I'd love to go there in real life.

I think Wandering Bibliophiles is a great team name. Thanks Delitealex!

And I wouldn't mind doing a spell it out. I don't have too many books set in Japan

So....
to get maximum points we would need to do the maximum number of detours (5) ; and the other 3 stops as tasks. o
Our detours don't look too bad, but I think for stop 4 ("Read a book with the name of the tarot card ""The Hierophant"" in the text or title") we probably want to do the task instead!! ;)

Stop 1
Task option
-- If we do the task...we should probably not 'spell it out' Japan as it is only 5 letters, and we need at least 6 of us to contribute to the spell it out for max. points.
That means we can either:
>>Spell-it-out : KAGOSHIMA
or
>>read books set in Japan or by Japanese authors.
or
if we do the detour, we need at least 4, and ideally (for maximum points) 7, of us to read a book with yellow text on the cover.

Preferences?
I'd rather do the spell it out of KAGOSHIMA or read a book with yellow text on the cover. (I think, I best check that I can find a book with yellow text haha)

message 15: by Drishti (new)

Drishti (drishti_ohri) | 1047 comments I can do either of these. For a spell-it-out of Kagoshima I have books for letters S and H. And, for yellow text on the cover, I have one too.

message 16: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments love it Karen :)

My thinking is the easiest detours will probably be yellow text, mystery, published in December, rebellion/resistance, castle/palace, but I'm happy to try to fill any of the detours (except for the tarot one, hard! Haha)

Really depends if many of us have yellow text covers I guess :)

message 17: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Wow thanks Karen for really simplifying it that way! The next book I actually plan to read starts with both an S and is yellow, so I could go with either one.

;)
I agree Jess, they seem to be the ones with the broadest appeal / easiest to find.
Although I could find a werewolf one, the difficulty is that if we want max. points 7 of us need to read one ; and not everyone may be a paranomal reader.

So let me go check what I can read for yellow text and then I'll come back and confirm :)

message 19: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 3990 comments I can find something for the spell out or Japan setting. I have to check on the yellow text on cover though.

message 20: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Blood Doctor by Barbara Vine I've got this I picked up two weeks ago at a huge second hand book sale, so I'm good for yellow text. Also have a Japanese author and can find any of those letters for Kagoshima :)

message 21: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Ugh, I have to go re-check my TBR list. I read that detour wrong, I didn't realize it said "yellow text". I thought we just needed a yellow cover

message 22: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 3990 comments Found quite a few books with yellow text on the cover.

Ok, I can read Black Rabbit Hall by Eve Chase for yellow text on cover (author name)

Looks like most of us can do yellow text on cover? Once the others check in let's confirm and then start reading :o

I'll change our team name too

message 24: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Ok, found a book with yellow text

message 25: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Wow! You guys are awesome! I have any and all of the above laying around. Japanese settings are one of my favs, yellow text is easy as are the letters in Kagoshima. Maybe someone should just flat out tell me what to read...
And I really like Wandering Bibliophiles, too

message 26: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16613 comments Mod
haha Lauri

I think we are going with yellow text on the cover, unless anyone really struggles to find one, and then we can flip it back to a task ;)

message 27: by Kazen (new)

Kazen I sign up during a break at work and I come home to find I'm on a team, yea!

Hi all! I'm Kazen, a medical interpreter living in (dun dun DUN) Japan! I met Karen during Tower Teams ~waves!~ and look forward to getting to know all of you!

I have some library books hanging around, including the audiobook of Come as You Are The Surprising New Science that Will Transform Your Sex Life by Emily Nagoski with (tiny) yellow text on the cover. So count me in! :)

message 29: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments Hi everyone! Look forward to playing with you. This is going to be fun :)

So it looks like for the first task we are reading books with yellow text. No problem! I have a couple that I can choose from but will need to finish my current read first. Most likely start it tomorrow.

message 30: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16613 comments Mod
Hi Cathy!

Ok, I need to finish my current book also.

Just a question... as a team are we happy to take things easy or do we want to finish in 8 weeks?
There is no time limit to the challenge so I'm happy to just take things as they come, but if anyone wants to be really speedy then I'll try and prioritise these books

message 31: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments I would prefer to take things easy just cause I'm doing more than one team challenge at the moment, but if you guys want to do speedy I'll make it work.

message 32: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 3990 comments Taking it easy sounds good to me.

message 33: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments I'm good with whatever :) just to make sure I understand though, we're at each stop for one week. We get extra points if we all finish our books in that week. But if we don't, we still get the points for completing the task. Is that right?

message 34: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments I tend to read several books per week because I have become way too addicted to these challenges so I can make it work either way :)

It's a minimum of one week, but we can stay longer. There is no extra points for finishing faster ; but we do get more points if everyone reads a book while we are at the stop (so we probably don't want to move forward until everyone has finished at least one book. Any books we read can be used for future stops too, so faster readers don't need to feel like they are "wasting" anything they read while waiting for slower readers). I hope that makes sense!!

In summary
Because we are choosing to do a detour for this first stop....
◈ Completing a detour (a minimum of4 team members reading a book with yellow text on the cover) will earn the team 25 points AND
◈ If at least 7 members of the team read a book with yellow text on the cover that is an additional 15 points AND
◈ If ALL team members read a book for the time we are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points

--I think we can totally rock this for the 50 points :D --

P.S sorry if I go into mod mode and takeover. Because I created this challenge I get the mechanics more than most. Just yell at me to shut up ;) I really won't mind!

Are you kidding??? We TOTALLY lucked out having you here!!! I'd vote with Lauri to name you Queen :D

message 40: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Thanks for the explanation! And agreed with the others, no need to apologise! :)

Sounds like a good plan then to stay at each stop until everyone's done. I might try to read ahead with a few possible tasks/detour options while I'm on uni break if they'll count for later :)

Oh thanks, that's really sweet.

My baby is having a nice day sleep, so I just did a quick tracking page on our s/sheet.
The s/sheet has been opened up so it can be edited by anyone with the link.
Basically, just add the book you read for this detour to the cell under your name when you have finished it :)

Do you have the sheets app Lauri? That's what I use on my iPhone/iPad although it doesn't have full functionality, it's ok for small edits or looking at a s/sheet

message 46: by Lauri (last edited Jan 29, 2016 06:32PM) (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Nope. Still need to charge my laptop & try that way - BUT - I have started on my yellow text book. Should be a quick and easy read... It's 'Insane City' by Dave Barry. Happy reading, everyone!

I finished
Hounded (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne
which although doesn't count for this challenge, I *really* enjoyed. Can't beleive it took me so long to get around to reading it.
Anyhow, it means I can now start my book with yellow text on the cover :)

message 48: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Yay :) I'll be starting my yellow text book tonight, though I changed my mind on what it was, haha. I'm going with this one now :)
The Prophecy of Bees by R.S. Pateman
