Kazen I went out today with a friend and showed her all my favorite shops downtown. I even found a new favorite - a sewing needle shop that has been in business for over 350 years! I bought some, of course, and a little box to hold them. My reading may be suffering as a result - must test out new needles! ;)

eta: picture! The box is small (4x8cm) and there are 25 needles in that little packet there. O.o

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Kazen, cute box and that's so cool they've been in business for that long! As for your reading suffering, it sounds like you need to get some audiobooks in your life ;)

I totally do! These ebooks I've already taken out from the library are giving me the stink eye, though. ;)

I agree there. Your weekend doesn't sound any better than mine. =(

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5979 comments Holy crap Lauri 43 books listed as currently reading?!?! Wow how do you keep track of all of them (story-wise)?

Drishti hang in there! You too Laila Jane - can't even imagine back to back 12 hr shifts!

We're in dire need of a new mattress (which we definitely will be getting this weekend due to Presidents Day sales!!) but before we get it I've been trying to clean/organize all the crap that has accumulated under there... That and my closet. I have way too much stuff (clothes) so it's just a big mess right now. :/

message 256: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5979 comments Finished The Indigo Spell and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets which I'll add to the spreadsheet.

For HP - Hogwarts is a castle and they are living there during the school year so it should work for "live in a castle" right?

message 257: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Cathy, I would count that as lives in a castle! Also, yay new mattress! I got one a few months ago, so good not to have a spring trying to jab me in the back anymore! Lol

message 258: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5979 comments Tell me about it! I've had the worst sleep this past week because the mattress has been killing me!

Yay! I have another on standby for another challenge but I won't worry too much about getting it done until later.

I just got off my library's website after putting the max number of things on hold! Oops! Ten books coming my way. I couldn't decide which ones though, so I used a random number generator to decide, lol.

Cool! What are you planning to sew? I used to cross-stitch and embroider almost as obsessively as I read. My eyesight isn't what it used to be. I'm a sucker for needles and embroidery floss...

Would you believe our State library system has no limit on the amount of books you're allowed to borrow? I go crazy... My orders between branches keep them ib business, I think

Gorgeous!

message 264: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Over a year! Well, at least it's getting there. When I was a teenager I had Stephen King's The Stand that I decided to read only at the hairdressers and at school sports on Wednesday afternoons when I was bored (I did tennis that semester. Never picked up a racket, lol!) I'd get my hair done every 6 weeks back then, but it took me a year to get through still! So I guess I kind of understand long haul reading, lol.

My library lets you have 20 books out at a time, but only 10 things on hold apparently. Having no limit is crazy though! Haha. I wonder how many people actually utilise that.

I got some headway with my mosaic table top this weekend

and it is my husband's birthday tomorrow so we had a big family lunch today and so I am *exhausted*.

I started Illuminae and I'm finding the style a bit of hard work. I'm going to keeop going for a bit, but I'm not sure it is for me

Kazen Lauri - I'm in the middle of a yoyo kick at the moment. I've been having fun going to craft stores close to the hospitals I work at and hunting down fabrics. When I was a kid I made friendship bracelets and had quite the embroidery floss collection - no such thing as too many colors! ;) I wonder what happened to it....

message 268: by Kazen (new)

Kazen Karen - Holy cow, that's huge and gorgeous! And what work - the gluing, the flipping... can't wait to see how it comes out. :)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Oh my gosh Karen, that pheasant is so lovely!

message 270: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments I loved making friendship bracelets when I was a little kid too. I was obsessed with getting all the colors. I even had the little organizer and the cardboard spools to wrap the string around. Eventually I moved on to knitting scarves, but I have a bad habit of buying more yarn than I actually use to make scarves so I just recently donated a bunch of yarn away. There's something very relaxing about spending an evening knitting and listening to audiobooks

I remember yo-yos! I did Chistmas ornaments and a pillow top. My embroidery floss -- DMC -- is all in numerical order in little baggies in 6 plastic shoe boxes in my room. I'm still too attached to it. I have issues.

Thanks ladies. I'm a bit nervous about it due to the size and complexity, (and also the expense of the materials!) I'm determined to get it done 'soon'.!

I knitted as a kid, but never really got the hang of it. I probably should try again some day. I think it would the perfect thing to do at night ; especially in winter :)

Wow, Karen! Talk about labor intensive! I just love it! How did you get the flower motifs on the tiles? You didn't have to make each one individually, did you?

Oh thankfully no, Lauri! Those ones are called "Millefiori" and they are gorgeous, but uneven (and expensive) which makes them a tricky medium. Basically they make coloured rods of glass and put them together to make flowers , and then that new cylinder is snapped off into small pieces which can be used in mosaics.

I'm a knitter and crocheter at heart - it's a great craft to learn! And with a little practice you can even read and knit, the best of both worlds. :) I feel weird if I'm at home reading and don't have sock knitting in my hands.

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Kazen - I'm amazed you can read and knit at the same time, that's talent! I knit in front of the tv and while listening to audiobooks all the time, but reading at the same time is too much multitasking for me

It's thanks to subtitled films - if I didn't look at the screen I'd have no idea what's going on! And it has to be the plainest of knitting, anything else and my brain fries. ;)

Ok so stupid question alert.... I assumed you were fluent in Japanese for your job? Or are you watching movies in another language that need subtitles?

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Updated the spreadsheet with all I've read, what should I put in the section for this task though? I've got a few books that can be used for it, idk if it matters which one I put in, lol.

Got three texts from the library today that my books were in, went to pick them up on the way to lunch with mum, then during lunch I get two more texts that there's books in! Lol I'll have to go back tomorrow to get those two stragglers.

I think just pick one that is unlikely to work for future stops (I'm guessing spell it out of Canada and Salalah and detours for the others).

Oh that happens to me so often with my reserves! No wonder I'm at the library 2-3 times per week ;)

message 288: by Lauri (last edited Feb 15, 2016 02:29AM) (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1724 comments I try to schedule my library holds to be picked up on either Sunday or Monday. My library system gives us a 2-week window for pick-up. If you fail to come get them, they charge you $1.00 for each one not picked up, so that's a really good incentive.

I'm off tomorrow so I should finish The Diva Frosts a Cupcake (set in America) and hopefully Accidentally Dead that has a werewolf character! Really enjoying The Queen of the Tearling but it won't count for this challenge...

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments I'm swimming in books at the moment! 5 library books have come in this week and yesterday, the lady who works at the office in my building, who saw me return from joining the library and learned I was a big reader, gave me two bags of books she had lying around! :)

Delitealex, that's an amazing name for a mystery book! Lol

Lauri, oh no, library fees! That sucks. Though a 2 week window is pretty generous so it makes sense. I can only join this one because they have no fees (unless it's 10 weeks overdue, then you're meant to replace the book since it's assumed lost), I'm weird but when there are fees I tend to have nightmares about missing the return date and ending up with huge fees! Lol

message 294: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1724 comments I am obsessive about renewing/picking up books and only rarely ever have a fine. I consider that my donation to the system! Plus I live about 4 blocks away from the library. I used to live on the same street! That was dangerous.

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1724 comments I finally finished my mystery late last night
The Diva Frosts a Cupcake (A Domestic Diva Mystery, #7) by Krista Davis
It was pretty cute, but not spectacular. Loved the dogs & cats sub-theme!
Karen, I tried the hyperlink thing in the spreadsheet and it turned RED & said 'Anonymous Alligators.' Seriously? So maybe you can check on it for me. I don't want to screw it all up. I should finish my werewolf book by tomorrow...

I did NOT expect to love it so much! I looked at the book page and didn't realize that the reviews were so mixed. All I know is that I found it hilarious! (view spoiler) I started it yesterday for another challenge and I couldn't put it down either. I stayed up until 2am last night reading, and then HAD to finish it today!! Can't believe it ended that way though *grrr* As much as I love Ethan I don't think I would be able to forgive him though. He better be extraordinary in the next one!
