Greta | 1459 comments Yes, now I have to read all the rules!! Any advice from more experienced players?

A little about me, I'm a 35 year old mom of 4 from Minnesota. I stay at home with my kids and watch my niece and nephew part time as well. Hobbies aside from reading are gardening, trying to stay healthy through exercise & good nutrition, going for walks with my family and boating/camping in the summer.

Favorite genres are fantasy of any kind but I read many other genres as well :-)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments Denise YAY!!! Haven't seen/chatted with you in months. How are you?

Wow Greta didn't know how active you were! I'm super jealous. I just got the Cize videos (LOVE SHAUN T!!!) because I've been super lazy for months and need something to ease myself into working out again and what better way than to dance?! Ha!

Re the game:
Anyone can chime in (and correct me if need be) but it's really easy and relaxed...at least how we've played it! Once we have our full team we can request the new itinerary. We will have 8 stops, with a minimum of 1 week at each stop. At each stop we have the option to do a spell-it-out (location) or do the detour. This round because we're Business Class, we can do up to 6 detours. We can determine in the beginning which we want to do based on what's given to us.

All books started from the beginning of the journey will count but you must read at least 1 book per week. If you tend to read more, or need to read something earlier that will work for a later stop, you can use that book but you still need to complete whatever task is set for that week.

For example, if you read a book in week 1 that works for the detour for week 5, you can choose to use that book for week 5 but you still need to read a book to use for weeks 1 (for the detour or s-i-o) and another in week 5 for "participation" since you already completed that task. At least this is how I understood it...

Does this make sense?

message 507: by Greta (new)

Greta | 1459 comments Cathy, I love CIZE!! My 7 year old loves it too :-)

NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments Your spreadsheet has been updated with the Business Class Itinerary :)

message 509: by Greta (new)

Greta | 1459 comments Cathy, that does make more sense! Thanks for taking the time to explain! I am going to reread the rules and will come back if I need more help understanding.

message 510: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments It looks like so much fun I can't wait to start it! Though I have to get off my lazy butt (put down the book or get off the computer) to do it...

Yay thank you for the new itinerary mods :)

message 511: by Greta (new)

Greta | 1459 comments So, for each stop we either read books in that country or spell out the country or city. We can skip those things by doing the detour that's listed by each stop? And then ALL of us do the detour?

So, for #1 in the new itinerary, is is the second city listed that we'd choose for the tasks? That would be Takamatsu.

message 512: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments Oops yes you are right! See we were spoiled because Karen was part of the team before & when we didn't know what was going on, she led us through it :P

Our 1st stop is Takamatsu, Japan.

We can choose to do the task OR detour.

Tasks -
A. set in Japan or Japanese author OR
B. Spell it out of Takamatsu or Japan (I believe Takamatsu gains more points so it's better to do that one - asked mods to be sure how that works)

Or Detour -
Read a book shelved (listed on the first page of the "top shelves" of the book) as russian - plurals and minor spelling variations are acceptable

According to the rules at least 4 members must complete the detour in order for it to be considered complete but to gain the maximum number of points, all team members should complete it.

Listed below is the Points scheme -

TASKS
◈ Completing a task will earn the team 10 points AND
◈ If at least 6 members of the team read a book that contributes to the tasks, that is an additional 15 points AND
◈ If ALL team members read a book for the time you are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points

DETOURS
◈ Completing a detour earns the team 25 points AND
◈ If at least 7 members of the team read a book for the detour, that is an additional 15 points AND
◈ If ALL team members read a book for the time you are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points

message 513: by Greta (new)

Greta | 1459 comments Ok, thanks again. That is so helpful :D

message 514: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1724 comments Ok -- so detour or Takamatsu? What are we feeling here?

message 515: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1724 comments Whoa! I just looked at the detours. Exponentially harder! Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore...

message 516: by Greta (new)

Greta | 1459 comments The goal is to do 5 of 8 detours? I feel like I saw that in one of Karen's first posts.

message 517: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1744 comments Hi everyone,

Just stopping by quickly and checking in before running out again. (We finally have some great weather here so I'm taking full advantage) :)

I'm all for spell it out of Takamatsu - I have nothing set in Japan or Japanese authors.
As for the detour, not so sure I have anything Russian either, so I'm quite useless for this first task I believe :(

message 518: by Greta (new)

Greta | 1459 comments I would be fine with the spell out!

message 519: by Greta (new)

Greta | 1459 comments I think the easiest detours would be:

#4 in series
Listopia- Books that Exceed Expectations
shelved 2008
shelved adult
Weight between 1-2 pounds
The Lovers tarot card

The DNA Helix option and Russian sound tougher.

message 520: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 3990 comments I'm fine with the spell out too.

message 521: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments Hahaha Lauri :)

Hi Annika! Welcome to the group!

I agree let's do the Takamatsu spell-it-out! There are 9 letters so we'll need 9 books for this 1st round. I'm almost done with a book that will work for T, and my next read can cover 1 of the A's. Anyone have a U book?

message 522: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments Since we are Business Class this round, we can do 6 detours. Greta's list above looks like the best ones to do from the list.

And I think I'll save my next read for the #4 in series (don't know if I'm on that # in any other series!) but I am 1/2 way through an audio that can be used for either U or A.

message 523: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 3990 comments I'm almost done with a book that can be used for S

message 524: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments Great Delitealex! I copied the previous round sheets on our spreadsheet and revised them for this round so that we can keep them separate. Anything ending in -Bus is for this round. I didn't bother changing the letters for the Spell-it-out - not sure if we need to log that for all the books if we've only doing it for the 1st 2 rounds?

message 525: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1724 comments Welcome, Annika!

I got A's, a possible K, M's and am going to the library on Monday. Let me know if we need that U, Cathy. I think that would be the hardest letter to find.

message 526: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments My book can be used for either but if we do the spell-it-out for Russia we'll need another one!

message 527: by Greta (new)

Greta | 1459 comments What are we using for the spell outs? Author/title/series?

message 528: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments It's title, series, author 1st or last name, narrator 1st or last name, or MC's first, last or nickname.

message 529: by Greta (new)

Greta | 1459 comments My current book fits for M. City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #3) by Cassandra Clare Series: Mortal Instruments

For the U, I could read: Unshapely Things (Connor Grey, #1) by Mark Del Franco

Let me know if you need it!

Hi Annika!! Glad you're joining us :-)

message 531: by Denise (new)

Denise (kitsune816) | 1647 comments Hi, Cathy! Good to see you, it's been forever! :D

If we're doing the spell out I have a few books that would work:

Sandman Slim - S title or K author
Armada
Kiss of Steel - K title or M author

I have a bunch of other books so if we need something else specific let me know, but I'm reading those three and Evernight (which I don't think works for anything, lol) in the next week or so. :)

message 532: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1744 comments I have a U book that I'm reading so I can take that one :)

I also finished The World As He Sees It yesterday. It can be used for:
T - Title
A - Author (Arthur)

message 533: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 3990 comments Read Small Fry (London Harmony #4) by Erik Schubach by Erik Schubach 4/3 for S in the spellout

message 534: by Cathy M. (last edited Apr 08, 2016 09:28PM) (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments Great! Probably would be better to use for A since we have the most of them!

When you've completed your book you can add them to our books log - here is the link, or add to the thread and someone can post it for you.

So to recap -

T - Cathy's Red Dirt Heart (MC Travis) (DONE)
A - Annika's The World As He Sees It (Author AM Arthur) (DONE)
K - Denise's Sandman Slim (Author Richard Kadrey) (DONE)
A - Lauri's Aunt Dimity and the Duke
M - Greta's City of Glass (Series: Mortal Instruments) (DONE)
A - Laila's Prisoner of Night and Fog (Author Anne Blankman) (DONE)
T - Jess' book
S - Deliteaux's book Small Fry (DONE)
U - Annika's Unexpec;ted Demands (DONE)

Just need to hear from Laila Jane, Jess & Lauri on what they have on deck and we can move things around if need be! I can also remove my T since I'm also listening to an audiobook that works for A.

message 535: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 200 comments Hello everyone, glad to see we have a full team again!

If we're spelling Takamatsu, I have books that will work for M, T, S, A. Also maybe K depending on when we were allowed to start books for this challenge (I started that one March 31)

message 536: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments I'd say go for a T or A since you have ones that will work :)

message 537: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1724 comments I'm going for A then since we need multiples Aunt Dimity and the Duke because I have it at home already!

Looking good already, ladies!

Aunt Dimity and the Duke (An Aunt Dimity Mystery, #2) by Nancy Atherton

message 538: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Hi guys! Just saw this. I can read for either A or T, whichever one is leftover

message 539: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments Actually, I've decided to read for A. My current book, Prisoner of Night and Fog, has an author with an A name - Anne Blankman

message 540: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments Sounds good Laila!

Jess can you do a T then?

message 541: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments Finished The Universe Versus Alex Woods which I've added to the spreadsheet. Can be used for U or A in the next spell-it-out or can use later for the Amazon hardcover weight task.

message 542: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1744 comments Finished Unexpected Demands for U :)

message 543: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments Great job Annika :)

message 544: by Denise (last edited Apr 04, 2016 06:35PM) (new)

Denise (kitsune816) | 1647 comments Finished Sandman Slim (and added to the book log). Works for a bunch of stuff but I think we're using it for K (author last name)? Also just started another K book, lol. :)

Do start dates matter for this? My book says 3/23 because I stuck it on my currently reading shelf when I downloaded it from the library (I tend to forget what I have if I don't do this, LOL) but really I just started reading it yesterday. Let me know if I should fix the dates!

message 545: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments Great Denise! We can use it for this spell-it-out or the one you're reading now. As long as we have a K covered we've good! Technically it should be books started 4/1 but if you say that you didn't start it until yesterday, don't worry about it. I trust you :)

message 546: by Greta (new)

Greta | 1459 comments I finished City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #3) by Cassandra Clare and will go log it now for our letter M, series name.

message 547: by Cathy M. (new)

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5977 comments We are looking good at our 1st stop :)

I finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time which can be used at later stops so I've added it to the books log.

message 548: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments I finished Prisoner of Night and Fog by Anne Blankman. Adding it to the spreadsheet now

message 549: by Greta (new)

Greta | 1459 comments What are the deadlines for each stop?

message 550: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 1238 comments My understanding was that we have to be at each location a minimum of 1 week, but we can stay as long as we need to.
