Help! I need a book set in....

Hi Rusalka - like Peggy I read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society a long time ago and my memory is fuzzy but I don't recall much food involved. Maybe others who have read it more recently can confirm.

I read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society last year and although I remember food being mentioned, I don't remember it playing a big part in the storyline.

@Rusalka, I read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society a few years ago. I remember the pie made with potato peel and a roasted pig. That's it. Not big part in the plot and not very french. It is a great book, though, and a quick read. So if you can make it fit any other task I recommend you do it.

Did you read Five Quarters of the Orange? There's a lot of french food there.

If anyone needs a book for Argentina - Read a book where the main character spends a lot of time on the road: one I recently enjoyed is Streetlights Like Fireworks. And so far the second book in the series, The Dragonfly Season, would also fit.

I haven't read it, it's on my TBR shelf though. I was thinking of reading The Perfect Meal: In Search of the Lost Tastes of France for this task, I happen to own it.

LOL! We must have been looking up the same things tonight. I can find books for most of the take home items and "about" items, but the setting (locations) are the hardest for me. I am still going through the books I own looking up the settings.

Shadow of the Wind is a great recommendation. Others are Marina and The Return. If you like travel stories, I also really enjoyed Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools: Tuck into a Slice of Andalucían Life.

For Poland I have some books on my TBR I think, one of them is The Boy on the Wooden Box. It has good reviews but I haven't read it yet. Another is The Girl from the Train, but it's partly set in South Africa and I don't know if 70% of it is set in Poland.

I was looking for some more and added Milkweed to my TBR.

Jenny worked magic with the Around the World lists. Also check out the bookshelves, as over the years the Master Lists haven't been updated (a lot of work) but members have added to the goodreads bookshelves. Which reminds me, I should update some of my reads on the bookshelves too.

Our gov funded multicultural radio/tv station here in Aus just published this today 40 books from around the world Was my last day at work today so didn't have a chance to look at it properly yet, but there are ones from a skim I have never heard of, so worth haven't a look see.

If anyone is looking for a book set in Ecuador, I haven't read it but plan to - The Queen of Water - is on my TBR list. It looks really interesting.

For Spain, I loved Guernica - one of my favorites. Also The Time in Between is really good.

For Chile, Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine, and the Miracle That Set Them Free was really interesting - non-fiction - about the 33 men trapped in the Chilean mine in 2010. Also, The Rhythm of Memory, which I haven't read yet but plan to in 2016.

I'd also recommend The Shadow of the Wind. If you like audio books, the narrator was excellent on this one.

I don't know if it's any good or not, but for Chile I choose A House in the Country. It sounds intriguing, and it has a high GR score.

Great recommendations! So far, I think I'll go with The Shadow of the Wind for Spain, Milkweed for Poland, and maybe Deep Down Dark for Chile.

A House in the Country sounds interesting, Lynda. Let me know how it is. It sounds a bit like Lord of the Flies in some ways.

You probably have a ton of recommendations for Venice, here are some more choices! :-) ...If you enjoy murder mysteries Kristie, Donna Leon's Commissario Brunetti series is set in Venice. And then there's the nonfiction The City of Falling Angels.

If anyone is still looking for a book about painting, I highly recommend The Lost Wife. The main character, Lenka, is an artist who is incarcerated in Terezin Concentration Camp where she and other artists are required to paint bucolic postcards and portraits. Several of the artists paint contraband pictures depicting life in the concentration camp that are hidden away.

It could also be read for the requirement to read about Auschwitz.

What about Sea Of Death? I read it at least 15 years ago, but I remember it being quite good (3 stars). Specially all the mythology around the fishing towns in Bahia, Brazil. Fishing is totally a main theme. Less than 300 pages, and quick read.

A Whale for the Killing is written by Farley Mowat who is a wonderful writer. I haven't read the book, but it looks interesting. It might be pretty gut wrenching to read, though.

I've read Jurassic Park for the Dinosaur book, but may need to use it to travel somewhere else if I can't find one for Alberta. Some of the books I've found are hard / expensive to get hold of in the UK...
