Help! I need a book set in....
Thanks Sandra! I'll keep it in mind, although I'm usually not so much into such murder/crime/detective stories. Maybe I'll wait for your review ;-)
Peggy wrote: "If someone's looking for caves, Dragonsong might work too. Although someone should confirm this, just in case."I agree, Peggy. All of the Pern books have the dragons living in large caves.

I read in an interview with the show runner that (view spoiler)
I really liked all of the casting too. Some of the actors didn't look how I imagined their characters to look but they all played their parts brilliantly.

How about
. I added it for me to read :)
Almeta wrote: "Travis of NNY wrote: "I thought the tasks I eyed looked doable but France has me stuck. A painting book. Any ideas. I cannot wven begin to find a book about painting"I'm having the same problem. ..."
The Rembrandt Affair by Daniel Silva was a spy book specifically trying to locate the Rembrandt. It was very in depth and even talked a little about the painting, I love the Gabriel Allon series since his side job is a painter.
For France I'm thinking of Suite Française and for a painting I'm considering either The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History or The Goldfinch.

Wouldn't be my idea of a vacation but how about The Shining

I just keep coming back to "a book about painting".
Not a book about a painter, nor a book about A painting nor a book about stolen paintings.
The phrase is more specific. And so every synopsis stops me! ***frown***

Though, I would like to read The Goldfinch.

Would you believe it has been on my TBR since Aug 2012?

Really? I just picked it up as the cover looked interesting!

Ahhh. I missed that message.
That DOES change things!
Thanks Rusalka.
re: The GoldfinchIt's a chunkster, Almeta. But I really liked it.
And while it is more about this particular painting and its personal history for the main character, it is some about painting more generally.
Some parts of this novel resonated more with me than other parts, but it was so overall amazing.

I don't know if any of these have vacation story lines, but you could check it out:

I've got a very dog eared and scribbled on hard copy of the challenge I've been working with so haven't been on much today. Those of you who have read Brideshead Revisited, enough Venice for Venice?
Rusalka - It is mostly in England but, yes visits Venice, Morocco, and New York too. Brideshead Revisited is in Book Drum if you want to check it out. The audiobook is only a little over 5 hours and I thought it was awesome!Almeta - I have that Color painting book on my TBR since 2012. Who knew???
I have been looking for a vacation in the mountains story too, but aside Bryson's Appalacian Adventure and Wild, I guess my books don't take me to the mountains much, except to volcanos.
ROFL! After I read Lust for Life, I read Dear Theo(letters that Vincent and his brother wrote back and forth - yeah, I really was interested in Van Gogh at the time). Anyway, I just got a GR Recommends in my updates: Because you read Dear Theo, GR recommends Goya.
Goya is another painter. How did they know we were discussing painting books?
Rusalka wrote: "...Those of you who have read Brideshead Revisited, enough Venice? ..."Venice? Check out In the Company of the Courtesan by Sarah Dunant.
Cherie wrote: "...Almeta - I have that Color painting book on my TBR since 2012. Who knew??? ..."Wasn't that our Rainbow year?
Cheers Almeta. Trying to use what's on my shelves at the moment. But of course, we have over 200 criteria and do you think I can fit any of the tasks with the nearly 1000 books we have in this house?
Cherie wrote: "I have been looking for a vacation in the mountains story too, but aside Bryson's Appalacian Adventure and Wild, I guess my books don't take me to the mountains much, except to volcanos."I found this, but it sounds depressing, even though it has good reviews. Descent: A Novel by Tim Johnston
Almeta wrote: "Cherie wrote: "...Almeta - I have that Color painting book on my TBR since 2012. Who knew??? ..."Wasn't that our Rainbow year?"
Yup. Still scarred by orange.
For the painting task I found this The Bookman’s Tale on my tbr shelf. I think it should work. For the mountain vacation I found The Gamble.
Also, I have this one Bats and Bones for the bat or bones tasks, don't know which one yet.
Janice, I also need a ruling on the devout task. I found this one, The Way of the Guilty, does it sound like the main character would be devout enough?
I'm having so much fun gophering, but its kind of taken over my life, lol.

Lori Z wrote: "For the painting task I found this The Bookman’s Tale on my tbr shelf. I think it should work. ..."Wow! I've had that on my TBR since May 2013!☺
Yeah, I think that was the rainbow year too. LOL about orange, Rusalka. I think that was when I read Lust for Life. It was blue. I still see colors before anything else on covers. I think I could still tell each book I read for my first rainbow.I had The Bookman's Tale on my list too!
I agree Rusalka! I can't believe I am going through my books l own looking for covers and settings. Why didn't I do that when I added them? I have added to the list before looking for awards for topples, and some settings but not consistently. All have page numbers and authors and some have genre. I even have them in alphabetical order according to title and series names and broken down by print, audio, Nook, and Kindle. What I really wish is that I had used Excel instead of Word to make the list - so I could SORT. I even have all of the library books that I have read this year written on the stupid list and what I read for all of the challenges, topplers and group reads.
Cherie wrote: "I have been looking for a vacation in the mountains story too, but aside Bryson's Appalacian Adventure and Wild, I guess my books don't take me to the mountains much, except to volcanos."I've been googling and haven't found much. Surely there have to be books were people go on vacation in the mountains. Maybe skiing stories? Caught in an avalanche? Stalked by a backhills freak? Hiking and stalked by a bear?
Almeta wrote: "Cherie wrote: "I have been looking for a vacation in the mountains story too, but aside Bryson's Appalacian Adventure and Wild, I guess my books don't take me to the mountains much, except to volca..."Nothing says that the vacation has to be a happy one. :)
Lori Z wrote: "For the painting task I found this The Bookman’s Tale on my tbr shelf. I think it should work. For the mountain vacation I found The Gamble.

First, I don't think The Bookman's Tale fits the category of "painting". It's really about books. I don't even recall the painting in it.
As for The Way of the Guilty... I'm not 100% sure. I was thinking more along the lines of internal conflict of a devout person, or someone who's spiritual beliefs cause them to act in a certain way (good or bad). This book seems to be a cosy mystery about a bible study group who solve a mystery. Are they all that devout? I'll leave this one to your discretion.
Sorry, I'm kinding of bull-dozing through your selections.
After reading some reviews on The Bookman’s Tale, I do remember the painting.Still - nope. The book is primarily about books - Shakespeare forgeries to be specific. The painting may have been the catalyst, but the story isn't focused on it.
There are murder mysteries or cozy mysteries set in the mountains and/or at ski resorts. I've read at least two, but I'm having trouble remembering enough about them to find the names. I'm pretty sure one of them was about a quilting retreat, and another was by an author whose last name started with "W". Really helpful, huh?I haven't read it, but Alpine for You might work.

Well, shoot. I thought for sure The Bookman’s Tale was going to work cause the description made it seem like he's obsessed with a painting. Oh well, back to the drawing board.
I did have my doubts about The Way of the Guilty, though, so glad I asked.
So, anyone have a recommendation for a book with a devout character?
Janice, is this more what you were thinking for devout? Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War. These 4 women risk everything to fight for the cause.(keeping my fingers crossed) :)
Would
work for vacation in the mountains? I saw the movie but didn't think of it as a "vacation." At least not a vacation I would take lol :)
Lori Z wrote: "Janice, is this more what you were thinking for devout? Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War. These 4 women risk everything to fight for the cause...."
I don't think so. From the book blurp, I don't see anyone who has strong religious beliefs, affiliations, or motivations.
That book could be used in the task that requires an army.
Here's a listopia of books more along what I am looking for:
