Kirsten (kmcripn) Oh, God, I know, Amy. I can't believe it. I think it's crazy. People are willing to take a dangerous risk just because they hate Hillary.

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments Unbelievable. I've never been glued to an election this much in my life. I'm in shock but am trying to still hang on to some hope here. Hope that something good will come of it all. Canada is definitely in shock right now. Not that I could speak for the majority, but definitely think I feel our national vibe. Shock and awe that it was even happening with these candidates.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions and that's fair enough.

From my perspective it's a sad indictment of the current climate. I'm not really that shocked after Brexit, I was hoping for a different result but there we are.... and I'm going to leave it there.

Keep it friendly people

Let's face it the media basically got Trump elected, by giving so much coverage to him along the election trail. Maybe on screen they are giving the appearance of their heads exploding and off screen they are high-fifing each other.

message 8821: by Amy (new)

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments I thought this was a good portrayal of the sadness felt in so many hearts last night and this morning...

The election of Donald Trump to the Presidency is nothing less than a tragedy for the American republic, a tragedy for the Constitution, and a triumph for the forces, at home and abroad, of nativism, authoritarianism, misogyny, and racism. Trump’s shocking victory, his ascension to the Presidency, is a sickening event in the history of the United States and liberal democracy. On January 20, 2017, we will bid farewell to the first African-American President—a man of integrity, dignity, and generous spirit—and witness the inauguration of a con who did little to spurn endorsement by forces of xenophobia and white supremacy. It is impossible to react to this moment with anything less than revulsion and profound anxiety.

There are, inevitably, miseries to come: an increasingly reactionary Supreme Court; an emboldened right-wing Congress; a President whose disdain for women and minorities, civil liberties and scientific fact, to say nothing of simple decency, has been repeatedly demonstrated. Trump is vulgarity unbounded, a knowledge-free national leader who will not only set markets tumbling but will strike fear into the hearts of the vulnerable, the weak, and, above all, the many varieties of Other whom he has so deeply insulted. The African-American Other. The Hispanic Other. The female Other. The Jewish and Muslim Other. The most hopeful way to look at this grievous event—and it’s a stretch—is that this election and the years to follow will be a test of the strength, or the fragility, of American institutions. It will be a test of our seriousness and resolve. - David Remnick, The New Yorker, November 9, 2016

Jean | 2387 comments I am sick. Amy, I agree with all that you posted above. I only hope that there are a few courageous moderate Republicans in the new Congress who will stand up and oppose the majority. In two years, there will be an opportunity to turn over part of Congress and hopefully elect a Democratic majority. For our part, we must stand up against the hate and the insults.

message 8823: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Brenda wrote: "I did my civic duty, and there's nothing I can do about the result. I believe I'm going to go bury myself in a book. :-)"

Ditto.

Aymen: Thank you!

Amy: That's almost as good as what I said.

Jean: Won't happen. The "courageous moderate Republican" is as extinct a species as the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the dodo, the passenger pigeon and the woolly mammoth. And standing "up against the hate and the insults" is what generates martyrs, like Stephen in the Biblical book called The Acts of the Apostles.

I take your point, ladies, and do understand where you're coming from.

However, I'm conscious that many members don't have any other form of social media, this may be it for some. Some people have lots of friends others feel comfortable chatting here. I'm just mindful of different backgrounds and where all might be coming from.

Putting a blanket ban on any subject is not something I'm in favour of if I'm honest. Yesterday was a important occurrence not just for the US but for the rest of the world also. People will have thoughts. Historically looking back through this thread very rarely are politics or religion touched upon generally and I'd like to think of this thread as a place where conversation takes place like it were face to face, akin to a coffee lounge feel. What I would hope for is that differing opinions are allowed but there's nothing to prevent kindness to one another when expressing those opinions and that is the key. A generosity of spirit amongst all that I think already exists within our group and hopefully sets us apart. We can all have different viewpoints but voice them in an adult and respectful way without any form of personal attack.

Some of you may well disagree with me here and I apologise if I've got this completely wrong but conversation usually flows fairly quickly on this thread. Yesterday viewpoints were expressed and .... well ..... today is another day.

All I can say, I do not follow politics.

If I was in America, I do not know what I would have done.

The worst of the worst, as I do not think either were any good.

Although I did think Hilary Clinton would win.

But then I thought we would stay in the EU.

What did shock me is who voted, for you.

Breaking it down, more younger people voted for Clinton, more older voted for Trump.

But also surprised our share in our company have gone up !

I thought Trump in, would bring shares down !

But many voted for Trump !, especially in Florida.

As you say ladies....

Anyone reading a good book.

If you like have a look at RBC new premises in Jersey, which I have posted on my Facebook page !!

It sounds like from what I read and from what Speaker Paul Ryan said, (Wednesday morning) 'they will be rewriting the bill' and it won't be the way Obama wrote it. While I have the luxury to be able to get my health insurance through work, we do need the affordable care act, but I hope that it will make the price I pay bi-weekly go down and I hope that what he said was true. I actually know someone that went back to England due to MS, back in 2000, they paid into the system their for 25 years, it was more affordable for them to do this verse staying in the US were they we're a US citizen.

Heres an interesting facts, to add to excellent comment and wish we had a like button.
Saw this on google, while following the election at work; The majority of college educated voters voted for Clinton and the majority of voters with just a high school education voted for Trump.
Found that interesting, along with most of the States that Trump won are hurting financial wise, the people in these states are hurting and with Trump wanted to make the states govern themselves more verse the Feds do it. It's going to be a mess, if he follows through with doing that.
Now were can someone miss 60% of their job, miss countless key votes, repave your driveway with a Government credit card (He did pay for it making installment payments) be able to run for President in the primaries and still get re-elected. Only in Fla. can that happen as they re-elected Marco Rubio to the US Senate.

message 8836: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Mike, Speaker Ryan is a POLITICIAN. That means that he steals lollipops from babies when he's not kissing them. In other words, he's a professional LIAR.

I really hoped that Trump would loose because I agree with the Virginia statement about politics: "You rise to your level of incompetence" and I didn't think he was incompetent enough to win.

And what about what was said by "President" Trump's pick for the neoNazi DHS, Mike? We didn't need to DHS BEFORE 9/11/2001, we sure as hell need it even LESS now!

Plus the water protectors at Standing Rock, both tribal and white, are screwed now. We KNOW that Trump holds the First Amendment in utter CONTEMPT.

Situations like this are the reality behind why dystopian novels, both adult and NA/YA, are so damned popular...if they didn't trigger the turmoil that allowed Trump to steal the election.

message 8837: by Aymen (new)

Aymen Ben cheikh Amy has a point, and I think that politics has an impact in a lot of other subjetcts: Health, work, freedom, ... And if we look few years before, some countries can be destroyed because someone was elected and decided to start a war, so yes, if we can't talk about politics, we re going to avoid very important subjects. And we just new the results yesterday I don t really feel like talking about foo ... and there are threads for food I think.

Actually, we might be more affected from what Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell have planned than from Trump. It would be nice if the Democrats took a page out of the Republican playbook and insist on doing everything to make Trump "a one-term President".

I live in a red county in a - thankfully - blue state and have heard all sorts of reasons why people voted for him. Most of it is "Hillary's evil!!!" -- but some wanted to stop gridlock. Funny, from where I sit, the gridlock was on the Republican side.

You'll survive and so will they, Janet. I hope. Sorry to hear they are driving you nuts.

I know I drove my own parents nuts. Once Mom got fed up enough with me that she scared the crap out of me by nearly pushing me through a weak spot in the living room wall! She scared the bejesus out of the dog, too!

Buttercup tucked tail between her legs, yelped and hid. Even Dad's jaw was halfway to the floor, but I don't think anyone was more shocked than Mom.

I haven't lost faith in the system as much as the people voting (or not voting). Some people are so inconsiderate. They couldn't bring themselves to vote Clinton so they thought they had to stay home. They don't realize voting AGAINST someone is actually more important in the case of Trump.

I dread to think how many girls will be sexually assaulted with him as role model.

Amber Martingale Horn, I stopped having faith in the system when I saw how Congress tried more than 70 times to overturn the Affordable Care Act.

How many girls were sexual assaulted regardless who's the President, regardless of their party?
Laws only work, when they get correctly applied. The perfect example was that rich swimmer from Stanford, the evidence was their for the charge to happen and a Judge let him walk off easy. He was penalized harsher by our US swimming federation and the international one banning him for life and will never be able to compete in the Olympics.

Then you have the ugly side of the sexual assault allegations with the Patrick Kane case. Were you have the greatest ever US born NHL player, putting himself into a bad situation, then wrongly gets accused of sexual assault, the evidence didn't support the girls story, neither what the two witnesses said, one being her friend and her family wrongly planted fake evidence to tarnish how the police handled the case. This girl should have faced charges for doing what she did, Patrick Kane was monetarily effected by this, his name was tarnished, opposing teams fans heckled him, but I'm proud how the Chicago Blackhawks, Blackhawk Nation, his fans including myself stood besides him and had the faith to believe in him, that he was innocent of doing anything wrong.

I hate Trump, proud that I voted for the lesser two evils, didn't waste my vote by not voting or voting libertarian or for the green party. But I also believe that you need to put your faith into that he'll do the right things, that the few Democrats in Washington will fight like hell to make him toe the line and that John McCain becomes a roll pain in the @$$ to Trump.

message 8850: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale I think the part about McCain being a pain in Trump's ass is a given, given how badly Trump dissed him.
