I wanted to have a tee shirt printed that said I survived my son's teenage years. My sister's kids were 6 and 8 years younger than my son. I would just say wait til they are teenagers and laugh my head off.

RIP Robert Vaughn

Died from Leukemia.

Dream on. The electors will meet and cast their votes according to their states laws. If you think that over 39 will change their votes you are deluding yourself. Change. org is irrelevant to the process. To quote my least favorite President, Obama, "Elections have consequences." Blame the Clinton campaign for not getting enough people to the polls in states like OH, PA, IA, WI and MI. When our side loses which we did in 2008 and 2012, you don't see us out there rioting in the streets. Clinton lost in Michigan by approximately 13,000 votes. Even though I voted against him twice, I could nod in approval that the country elected an African American President. Obama's policies on the other hand pretty much sucked and some of his actions were unconstitutional. As someone who has in his family tree some of the founders of this country, John Adams, Sam Adams, John Hancock and John Jay, we take the transition of power seriously. One of the nastier ones was between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. They later mended their friendship and engaged in ongoing correspondence until their deaths on July 4, 1826. It saddens me that people who claim to be tolerant and preach tolerance are among the least tolerant people in many cases. Talk about sore losers...sheesh.

message 8857: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Obama is your least favorite? Gosh... That's crazy. He has some policies that sucked (drones)... but for the most part he was handicapped by the Republicans who refused to work with him.

My least favorite:

- Bush #2
- Reagan
- Nixon

I do agree about the electors. Though, we had one elector in our state that refused to vote for Hillary regardless of the result of the voters.

People I blame for this election:

The media - they gave Trump free coverage and then never corrected his 80% falsehoods

Debbie Wasserman-Schultz - for not having a level paying field in the Democratic primaries.

The media (2) - not covering Bernie Sanders

The people who did not vote at all - remember sometimes it is more important to vote AGAINST someone than FOR someone.

All the people that hated Hillary so much they voted for Trump. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

message 8858: by Gary (new)

Gary Sundell | 1191 comments I think we can agree that the major parties put up the two most flawed candidates in recent memory. Aside from that you and I can agree to disagree on politics and agree on books we like or don't like. Have a great weekend my friend and happy reading.

message 8859: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Yeah, I agree I had to laugh at all that thought Hillary was electable. I knew she wasn't and that was before all the e-mail crap. Still, at least she would've been good at governing.

A quote I remember from "Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me!"

"They're both wrong... but one is wrong within normal parameters". This was from the dyed - in - the - wool Republican on the panel show, P.J. O'Rourke

Ter'e Crow Lindsay (terecrow) | 798 comments Di always enjoyed Robert Vaughn. Not only was he a talented actor, he was so handsome, in his rugged way and I loved the way he spoke. Another person lost to leukemia. Such a shame.

Re: the political side here............am treating this like a communal t.v. If I don't like the show.....I can change the channel. Right? It's not the discussion I dislike ---- it's the nasty tone. I try to type the way I speak to another person. Not everyone was taught that way.

As Gary said......"the next few years will be interesting".

message 8863: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Amen, Ter'e!

The way the right portrays the left and vice versa. I may not agree with the right, but it's the hate I so often see that turns me off.

Years ago, my mom used to watch a show on Court TV (remember them?) -- my niece said it wasn't a talk show, it was a screaming show.

Gary: You obviously aren't one of the 90% of Americans who probably would be DEAD by now had the Rethuglicans succeeded in repealing the Affordable Care Act because they have a so-called "pre-existing" condition like my diabetes. You also obviously never had your food stamps get cut each year for three years even though your rent went up several times and your SSI stayed stagnant like mine did for 3 years. 2013 was the first year I'd gotten a Cost Of Living Adjustment (COLA) to my SSI since 2009.

C**p like THIS is why the Republicans are as DISLIKED now as they were in 1800.

The GOP replacements that they tried to pass over the past few years for the Unaffordable Care Act include the pre- existing condition language. My sister, who is an RN has actually had correspondence with Trump during the campaign about this issue as she was born with kidney issues among other things. During the campaign he indicated that the pre-exisiting language will be part of any replacement. He confirmed that again in his interview with the Wall Street Journal that was released Thursday. My opposition to Obamacare was more basic. Explain why men are required to buy an individual policy that includes OB-GYN care? I had an excellent plan available through the State Bar of Michigan which I was extremely happy with. (Remember we were promised "If you like your plan you can keep it.") I could not keep my plan as it didn't comply with the one size fits all mentality of Obamacare. The first year Obamacare went online the cheapest policy I could afford was approximately $300 per month but included a $30,000 deductible. I opted for the fine even though I have been suffering with moderate to severe psoriasis for years.

Politicians are liars, Gary. And if "During the campaign he indicated that the pre-existing language will be part of any replacement" is true, why the (bleeping) hell didn't the mainstream media, INCLUDING NPR, cover that? If he intended that all along, he should have said so in public as well as in the letter to your sister. But as it is, we only have your sister's word.

I admit that the part about "men are required to buy an individual policy that includes OB-GYN care" probably should not have been included, but that was a FAILURE of the proofreader not the law itself.

Sharon: Sorry to hear that.

So good to hear from you, Sharon. Hope you make a full recovery and soon. Take good care of yourself

message 8875: by Gary (new)

Gary Sundell | 1191 comments Amber he did say it in public. NPR and the mainstream media were in the bag for Clinton, so I am not surprised they didn't mention it. A couple of minutes worth of web searching found it. It was said in a February Republican debate hosted by CNN.

Here is the quote.
“I want to keep pre-existing conditions [the Obamacare provision that prohibits insurers from denying coverage]. I think we need it. I think it’s a modern age. And I think we have to have it.”

message 8876: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale CNN is something I can't watch, Gary, and you know why. If it's ANYWHERE on TV I can't watch it.

message 8877: by Gary (new)

Gary Sundell | 1191 comments Amber I am aware of that. There was an article in Forbes from a couple of days ago which pointed out that Trump's position on pre-existing conditions is not new. Of course the devil is in the details, how does the cost get covered...he reinterated it last night in the 60 minutes interview that he wants to keep it along with covering kids at home to age 26.

but Janet just answered that you will continue them- I guess I was wondering are they always the same 5 - or do you add- or change up- This is my first year of fully retirement- and I joined goodreads later on in the year- then here- so I'm a bit behind everyone- and I guess now I'm getting the 'hang' of everything-well, kinda anyway!!

Amber Martingale Gary: Re: Your ? about the Cadfael novels: If I were getting bored, I'd have stopped reading the series by the fifth book. *BG* I just got a copy of the thirteenth novel in the series, The Rose Rent.

Rick: Gary has already pointed out, on the previous page, that Trump SAYS that's the ONLY provision of the Affordable Care Act he wants to KEEP. I think Trump's lying since that's what politicians DO: they lie.

Amber Martingale You're welcome, Gary. I actually read the 11th book first many years ago in college, but no longer have my copy because it was in my footlocker which I had to abandon in Phoenix before moving BACK to Illinois 13 years ago. I had to abandon it b/c Mom said we couldn't take it if I couldn't find my keys for the locks on it and I couldn't.

Don't know what the apartment complex management did to the items we had to abandon, including about half of grandma Roquemore's good crystal! Crystal she acquired with her formal china set when she lived in England for a time...at least according to family legend. We had to leave some of the larger pieces in the china set behind too. Ran out of room in the UHAUL truck Mom rented AND Mom's '98 Suzuki (the car) that my cousin JP and his mom's friend Fred hauled behind the truck because they were driving the truck from AZ to IL for us while Mom and I flew Southwest Airlines from Sky Harbor to Lambert. They took Route 66, the lucky buggers.

And now you guys know more about me than I've ever really revealed before on GR... .

Maureen, we may well do those challenges again and perhaps some new ones too. If you have any ideas please feel free to share them. I'll be asking members for ideas as the new year approaches, see what they want to do again, anything new. We want members to have fun! Any questions, please don't hesitate whether here or privately.

Rick | 606 comments Rick: Gary has already pointed out, on the previous page, that Trump SAYS that's the ONLY provision of the Affordable Care Act he wants to KEEP. I think Trump's lying since that's what politicians DO: they lie.

reply to Amber:

Even if Trump does keep that provision, he also has to keep the provisions that insurance companies cannot charge pre-existing patients higher premiums and that they cannot outright reject insuring those people. Otherwise, the pre-existing issue is meaningless. I don't trust trump either....

message 8896: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Good point, Rick, even though I personally never thought about the need to keep them from overcharging or the ban on not covering those with pre-existing conditions would be totally meaningless.

I don't think anyone who's SANE trusts him, either.
