Groovy Lee That's a good-looking court, Sean. Wimbledon's got nothing on that grass court--and I'm not just saying it. If I ever come into an inheritance, or,(everything crossed) I become a bestseller, the first thing I'm getting is--you guessed it:)

Sorry you lost, but you know you don't often. So, stretch, take deep breaths, and get back in there:) I'm rooting for you.

Amber Martingale Groovy, I'm NOT "anti cable/satellite" like you are. I just can't AFFORD it!

I get $733 a month in Supplemental Security Income and $410 of that has to go just to my RENT! Another approx. $50 to my power bill, $130 to my twice a month housekeeper, anywhere from $33 to $150 out of pocket for my dental and the rest to things like laundry or whatever I need to buy for my household that my SNAP won't cover...like dishwasher detergent or whatever OTC meds I need (like alcohol swabs for my Humulin 70/30 pen needle)...and I don't have enough left for even PIRATED TV.

Hell, I'm lucky if I can OCCASIONALLY afford a matinee show at the local movie theater!

I won't give detail, Groovy but I'll keep you posted!

message 6004: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Thank-you, Janet!

And Amber, I do understand. Taking care of yourself is more important. It should be against the law to have to pay to look at tv--I mean, honestly!

message 6005: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Thanks, Groovy.

It's a hot and sticky night and I'm supposed to be asleep. (It is 2:00 am!). This could be a long, sleep deprived night.

P.S. Janet, try laying a wet (cold water) washcloth over your head or neck when you go to bed on those sticky nights. Worked great for me when I was a kid in Tennessee in the pre-air conditioner days.

I can tell you - I am so thankful for A/C. I remember the days I didn't have it and I was raising a family in Ohio. Man, it can get blazing hot and humid there.

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments I wish I could send you all our weather. 70s for the most part with occasional low 80s. Not much of a workout for the AC yet. Do you guys have ceiling fans in the bedroom? Tremendous help and much less AC use at night on those borderline hot days.

Don't know about you all, but I actually really like the autumn/winter. I LOVE the cold dark nights, snuggled inside with a book. Best feeling ever. The summers good for getting washing dry I suppose...

No I like sunny weather really, just not so hot you can hardly breathe and you need about 10 showers a day...

Last year Indian Court declared that same-sex is not only prohibited but also an arrest-able and punishable crime.
The world moves forward, we move backwards.

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Only some time ago did Stephen Fry, visiting several countries to gauge their receptivity towards g/l culture, came away favorably impressed with India's level of tolerance. More's the pity.

message 6040: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale At least, in theory, gays and lesbians get a JURY trial before being punished in India, Titas. That WASN'T the case in the Ugandan "KILL THE GAYS !" Law. They were, from what I heard, liable to SUMMARY execution just as spies caught in civilian clothes in times of war.

Re: A/C. Air conditioning was initially invented for use in a hospital's malaria and yellow fever wards...if I remember correctly.

" In 1820, English scientist and inventor Michael Faraday discovered that compressing and liquefying ammonia could chill air when the liquefied ammonia was allowed to evaporate. In 1842, Florida physician John Gorrie used compressor technology to create ice, which he used to cool air for his patients in his hospital in Apalachicola, Florida.[8] He hoped to eventually use his ice-making machine to regulate the temperature of buildings. He even envisioned centralized air conditioning that could cool entire cities.[9] Though his prototype leaked and performed irregularly, Gorrie was granted a patent in 1851 for his ice-making machine.[10] His hopes for its success vanished soon afterwards when his chief financial backer died; Gorrie did not get the money he needed to develop the machine. According to his biographer, Vivian M. Sherlock, he blamed the "Ice King", Frederic Tudor, for his failure, suspecting that Tudor had launched a smear campaign against his invention. Dr. Gorrie died impoverished in 1855, and the idea of air conditioning went away for 50 years.

Since prehistoric times, snow and ice were used for cooling. The business of harvesting ice during winter and storing for use in summer became popular towards the late 19th century.[11] This practice was replaced by mechanical ice-making machines.

James Harrison's first mechanical ice-making machine began operation in 1851 on the banks of the Barwon River at Rocky Point in Geelong (Australia). His first commercial ice-making machine followed in 1854, and his patent for an ether vapor compression refrigeration system was granted in 1855. This novel system used a compressor to force the refrigeration gas to pass through a condenser, where it cooled down and liquefied. The liquefied gas then circulated through the refrigeration coils and vaporised again, cooling down the surrounding system. The machine employed a 5 m (16 ft.) flywheel and produced 3,000 kilograms (6,600 lb) of ice per day.[citation needed]

Though Harrison had commercial success establishing a second ice company back in Sydney in 1860, he later entered the debate over how to compete against the American advantage of unrefrigerated beef sales to the United Kingdom. He wrote: "Fresh meat frozen and packed as if for a voyage, so that the refrigerating process may be continued for any required period", and in 1873 prepared the sailing ship Norfolk for an experimental beef shipment to the United Kingdom. His choice of a cold room system instead of installing a refrigeration system upon the ship itself proved disastrous when the ice was consumed faster than expected.[12]" from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_con...

message 6045: by Jean (new)

Jean | 2387 comments Yes, Titas, but lest we in the USA congratulate ourselves too mightily (yes, our Supreme Court has done what our Congress would not) we sadly have only to think of last week's murder of nine innocent people by a 21-year-old who thought it was his duty to remove them from this world because of their race. The people of Charleston, though, have responded with dignity and unity rather than with anger and violence, so perhaps there is hope for this nation. We hope that the confederate flags will all come down...and now the rainbow flags can fly proudly!

message 6046: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I am proud of the way the people in Charleston handled it. Instead of it dividing races and causing a race war, EVERYONE stood united. You can't help but admire that.

message 6047: by Jean (new)

Jean | 2387 comments Yes, Groovy. I am glad that so much attention has been paid to the positive response. It's such a contrast to the riots and hate speech we have been used to for the past months in response to police shootings, etc.

Sharon Mccall the official photos were released today from my muddy exploits last week so have added a couple to my profile page. apologies for the gruesomeness that is me :)

Friday started well for me this morning when I did a wee test with my tape measure round my waist and hips - 2 inches off the waist 4 off the hips! guess I need to get back to the gym and get working harder!!

Groovy Lee I'm going to add to that by saying: If you want to keep me in a good mood, don't mention tape measurer, size two, eat healthy, get out there and walk...etc.,
