I read On Distant Shores by Sarah Sundin. It features the Mount Vesuvius volcanic eruption of 1944. The eruption caused multiple plane crashes and destroyed planes on the ground for the 340th Bomb Group, which just happened to be stationed at Pompeii Airfield near Terzigno, Italy, just a few kilometers from the foot of Mount Vesuvius.
