It took me a while to understand what was wrong with my posts. Nothing. :(
But GR DOES count those spaces that they don't publish (at least in the status updates).
They also reduce used space when you try to just add blank space, too. I guess pixels must be endangered. /

So, I like a YA read now and then. I've run across several really excellent novels that are YA but I'm having a problem. Some of my GR friends and followers are a bit "younger" than me and I've started getting large numbers or book recommendations that are, "wow this is a great book!"But when I read it it's often (read mostly) one I find to be at best mediocre. Then I'm faced with either saying nothing (which I almost never do) or giving a negative review that doesn't hurt feelings.
I guess people think that of you agree on one book you'll agree on all books or something.
Mentioned this as I got several book recommendations just today.

These are mostly people who have liked my reviews and so on and I try to be "nice"... But I am beginning to side step a lot of the recommendations.
Hmmm... I can see this being an issue. I do make unsolicited recs BUT I try to only do that after I've gotten a feel for what that reader likes AND I run into a book that I feel I could see that reader read.
I also totally understand your feels regarding YA books - most of them aren't my cup of tea, either. The unbridled angst just drives me bananas.
Most of the time I ignore recs that I don't think apply. THe rest of the time I'll try to "like" the rec but I don't necessarily shelve the book.
I'm finishing up a book I'm not overwhelmed by but I know one of my "GR friends" likes it. When I review it I really don't want to come off like "this book you like is BBBAAADDD". I think I may simply start not responding to recs (I get a lot) and even if I read the book not make it "because" of the rec.

You know, that just happens, though.
I have a pretty decent group of followers who LOVE Kristen Ashley (romance author) and everything shes ever written. I decided to read her out of curiosity and OMG. I feel the writing is only 2 steps above criminal. The plot lines are INSANE. She's repetitive. Her heroes all sounds the same and they all drop their "g" when using words like "beginning." Someone is always going to get kidnapped. If the hero has an ex - she WILL be a total bitch and if the ex has kids with the hero then the kids will also hate the ex. Her heroines all do the same things and sound the same and OMG ALL THE CLOTHES PORN.
So I ripped a handful of them to shreds. And all of my friends who like her had to see my reviews.

A few months later a different group of friends were buddy reading a book I LOVED. And I had to watch them rip it to shreds. Totally understood how those poor KA fans must have felt.
But we all stayed friends cause...tastes and personal preferences differ greatly.
The only way I make recs are through my comments and/or star review.There are books I read years ago, I'm afraid to review till I read them again.
Taste and perception seems to change over time.

Exactly! ANd how anyone could NOT read Andre Norton just...confuses me. Are these "people" actual humans?
See, I'm not a Norton fan. I like her Witch World books but several others I just couldn't get into. It's all taste and the way the writer speaks to each reader.

Bookmark Exchange Update:I'm still waiting for addresses from Mike (the Paladin), Nicki, Becky, Nyssa and Elise. I was also a little busy last week and didn't have much time to work on the harassment schtick.
If you're still in PM me with an address and a number of bookmarks you can possibly exchange (maximum is seven right now.) For the others (me, Mrs. Joseph, Jackie) I am assuming everyone is good with seven exchanges.
To entice the others, I got my hands on some bookmarks from the public library here. Very rare outside this city. You'll get to pick from "Reading is my cardio", or "I like big books and I cannot lie". Supplies limited, state your preference early.

I'm so confused. I don't know what this is then. I thought it was a one time thing, but then there was discussion of multiple exchanges, but now it's one time again? I don't mind that it's here, it's just that I think it's easily overlooked here. And since I know from prior experience that people will want to share pics and stuff of what they get, I think it would be better in a thread for that.

I need to confess to someone. I did something i used to tease my wife and that I've also teased my daughter about.I am in a very reduced finical condition since my wife passed. In other words my savings etc. are all gone and I live on a limited income.
Of late I've been struggling with depression, can't get into a book, nothing has really helped (possibly early onset of SAD with the end of Daylight Savings Time)... Anyway I just went and spent (read dented my credit cards I'm been trying to pay down) on a lot of new church clothes and a couple of "hobby" items. I set myself back months...
To paraphrase Penny from Big Bang Theory Depression, lack of wisdom and a credit card are a bad combination...oh yeah and clearance sales.

Thanks. I'm not feeling too guilty. It's just that I know I have the problem. My daughter said that it seems to her I do this about once a year (actually I probably do it on a smaller scale more often).Oh well, at least I have enough church/dress clothes so i should be satisfied. I get it's not the worst i could do...but I still feel a little frustrated with myself.

Jim Dale does a good job. "We" got them years ago on disc, my grown daughter still listens to them. I'd like to hear the Stephen Fry version, but that doesn't take away from Dale's.
No, Jim Dale just takes away from Jim Dale's versions. ;) Honestly, I just don't like his reading style. I have sampled the HP books, and hate how he reads them. I've also listened to a couple other books on audio that he's read, and have hated every moment of both of them. I just can't stand listening to him read. I will never listen to another book he reads again.
I don't think that Stephen Fry is perfect, but he's much better than Jim Dale, if you ask me. I don't want to jam sharpened pencils into my eardrums when Stephen Fry starts reading, anyway.
I listened to Dale read the first Potter book about 10 years ago. I don't remember much about his reading, though I must have been ok with it.I did listen to the Fry readings during my last HP re-read and loved them.
Looking at what else Jim Dale has done, I could try The Night Circus to see how he does.

Any Harry Potter is better than no Harry Potter, but Stephen Fry Harry Potter is better than Jim Dale Harry Potter. :DI shall PM you.

I taught myself how to type, so I have no qualms about only using one space. In fact, I think two looks strange and is a waste of thumb movement. But that's just me. I don't have a problem with it if people use two. But three? That's just insane. O_O
