On that note, is anyone interested in starting a bookmark exchange program? I'm thinking if we could get ten or so people together we could generate a list and do a bookmark exchange. Mail out one to someone on the list every month kind of thing.

I'm just not sure about postage for people that might be interested. I'm thinking freebie bookmarks from businesses and places in your town (ideally the library or local bookstores have them.)

Postage in Canada for an International letter is $2.50. I could afford that every month if the bookmarks were cheapish.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I still have some of the ones my wife and I made (though I don't generally give away the ones she made). I'd be happy to participate if you want to organize it...I'm either too busy or too lazy to do the organizing.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I'm interested but I admit I don't really know much about bookmarks. I sorta just stick paper, recipts, etc there and keep it moving.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments My favorite used book store usually has a selection of book marks at checkout that they give away(they used to sell some of our hand made ones back when). Most big book stores also tend to give away bookmarks from publishers (as well as sell others of course). Also sometimes libraries have them, our church has blue ribbon bookmarks with congregation name address and so on them we give away. Oh and i also get them from charities.

Those are the free ones there are also souvenir and craft book marks that people sell...depends on what you're looking for.

I like this idea. I've done a bookmark exchange before in other groups...usually around the holidays and it's always fun.

I don't know how much international postage is, but I'm assuming if it's a small/regular sized envelope the cost would be minor.

message 3108: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes I was thinking freebie ones from libraries and bookstores would be ideal. Keep it down to postage and a pittance (i.e. if you find a bunch at a garage or thrift sale then go for it, otherwise free.)

My library had piles of them around this summer and they were really good. Another idea would people making them. I'd be up for that because I love to paint and draw and doodle. We could write quotes we like on them. Anything would do. Even the receipt for a book you bought.

Anyone who wants in can PM me and we'll see if there's enough interest after a couple of weeks. That should give people a chance to brainstorm if they can find bookmarks as well. If the list gets too long we might have to randomize who sends to whom just so the initial run is not onerous. Otherwise I'll double check with everyone who wants to be in and I'll PM people with whom they need to send a bookmark too.

message 3109: by Elise (new)

Elise Kleuskens I'm in! Will be sending you a PM shortly!

Elise Kleuskens Also, this is perfect for my dad as well.. He is a stamp collector, but he is disabled so it is kinda hard to get stamps for him! I think he would love all the foreign stamps :)

Uh, I use Kleenex because I can never find the bookmark I JUST had. However, I do have bookmarks from Powell's, just paper. Nothing fancy. I think the bookmark trade is a super idea.

Nyssa | 2023 comments Can't believe October is already almost half over. I may just have to dedicate 2016 to all of the FoF and AE reads I've missed this year and last. That will be my one and only challenge.
These droughts keep happening and besides the obvious call of RL, Im not sure why they're so chronic.

message 3121: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I feel your pain, Nyssa. My reading over the last few months has been sporadic at best. But, pretty soon I will have mucho reading time, so I'm hoping to get caught up!

message 3122: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I hope your free reading time is for all great reasons, and I wish you happy reading! :)

My reading time is going to take a bigger hit, but for more positive reasons, if I'm lucky.
I'm going back to school to finally finish my degree and to get my teaching certificate. I've been subbing for four years and have been a long term sub in my current assignment since the beginning of the school year, and despite the challenges I love it!!

I just read this entire conversation to my husband starting here:

Nicki wrote: "Oh, re: the bookmark exchange... I won't sign up, because I don't use bookmarks, but I'd be happy to send one to anyone who wants a British one for their collection. Just PM me. :)"

after exclaiming - OMG we got all the way to Men in Black (forgetting that they were mentioned earlier, until I read it out loud)!!

HomeInMyShoes, Mike (the Paladin), Jackie, Mrs. Joseph, Elise, Nicki(?)...

message 3142: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'll participate too.

message 3143: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I can do this thing, I think. Just need to know the
"rules" and what not.

message 3144: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes That would make nine. I'll leave it open for others to join over the weekend, otherwise I think that's reasonable for a first round. I mean, really, how many books can one be currently reading? :)

I'll send out information next week. In the meantime, those that are interested can PM me a snail-mail address they can receive bookmarks at. I'll send out a sending schedule for everyone when I've got the final number. I'm thinking send a bookmark every other week kind of thing. So it's spaced out a bit.

If Nicki is not really interested (I did sort of just volunteer them) they can PM me to opt out as well.

message 3145: by Becky (new)

message 3147: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments So I read a blog post today about spaces - particularly about how many spaces one uses behind the period. The blog post - stimulated by this video I haven't watched here: http://www.newyorker.com/culture/cult... - said that the video states that "Only people over 60 use two spaces after a period."

Umm. SO NOT TRUE.

I'm under 40.

I always use two spaces behind the period. If I don't, trust me that its because of space limitations and I went back to remove them. Its automatic because that was the way I was taught to type.

What about y'all?
