Good writing isn't a born gift (unless you're my brother, grrrrrrrr) it's something that only comes after a lot of hard work. So write and let the quality come later.

Yeah, my writing goes one of two ways.1: "LOOK LOOK LOOK AT WHAT I WROTE!!! LOVE IT PLEASE!!!"
2: "Keep it secret. Keep it safe."
If you feel like writing - write. For awhile I was into writing fan fiction. I suspect it wasn't very good. Though it wasn't the worst either. But it was fun. And it was a good brain excercise.
I say go for it. I don't think I could write anything orginal but if you can go for it.
I've written 2 1/2 really awful 1st draft books. I've outlined dozens more. It's made me confident enough to actually try one I may move on to the editing phase with. I'm still at a very low word count, but I'm in the habit of writing every day and enjoying it. Cuts into my reading time, though...

Then I expect to take years to actually become a decent writer.

I don't write like I should. I need to keep those skills fresh if I think I'm really going to go back to get a Masters.
I've started several stories but never finished. My biggest issue is that I...like the story part but not the writing part. Once I get the story in my head, I tell myself the story and move on.
I usually get just enough on paper to give myself a good mental purge and then stop.
^I would put myself in that camp. I think I should be a children's writer actually, but that's not an easy path. I do have an ability to draw, paint and take a not bad photograph.

I've heard that too. I've also heard that publishing is super hard and I'm a big proponent of paper books for kids.I really should be taking the opportunity more with my four year old to test story and art ideas.

You should! HP was sold by a kid.
Speaking of kids books... Has anyone read The Day the Crayons Quit? I can't believe the message this sends kids.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDBTw...Youtube video of a reading. It is such a negative book in my opinion.
If those were my crayons, I'd snap em in half and buy markers.

I'll have to check it when I get off work.
No video access. :(
I'm confused. The narrator was a little annoying but the book seemed cute enough. What's the bad message? It think it teaches kids to embrace being different (black wants to be something happy like a rainbow, pink wants to be used even though it's a "girl" color) and to think outside the box. What am I missing?
☆αlly☆ (litєrαry єscαpist) wrote: "The message I got from that is if you don't like something, protest and refuse to do it."Another perspective is "if you don't like something, speak up and try to change it". I think it's a good message about wanting to be happy, and having enough self-respect to ask for what you need to get there, rather than just settling for an existence that isn't fulfilling or enjoyable. Also, it's a nice message from Duncan's perspective, about changing your mindset to take others' needs into consideration, which can be just as rewarding. I liked it. :D
I laughed until I cried reading that book. It is also the only book I could get my boyfriend to read last year...It holds a special place in my heart ;)
I liked the book. My only concerns. I know you like matching colours to concepts and to backgrounds Mr. Jeffers, but in low lighting, like when you're reading before bed, yellow on white is atrociously hard to read.I'm evicting yellow.
That moment when you find an interesting free book on amazon, click on download and it tells you that you already downloaded the book 3 months ago...

Ok I'm pretty sure it was:
The Death Bundle, Books 1-3"
Nice! It looked really good to me...until I got to this:
The Death Series is a six volume, dark dystopian new adult fantasy series about a group of resilient American teens gifted with unusual paranormal talents who rally together (along with some clever zombies and snarky adults) to come against a corrupt futuristic government.
DoodlePanda wrote: "Is it like YA?"New Adult - NA
It's like YA with sex (and it only started because YA writers were beginning to put waaaaaay too much sex in their YA books. So they eventually started NA so that those authors would stop getting flack for putting major ass sex and atrocious relationships in YA books.)
It's in between YA and regular adult. I think it uses smaller words than regular books, but a little less like this happened and then like that happened and I was like.I believe what the world needs now is more categorization hair-splitting.
Aaahhh I see! Oh well, it was free so I don't care :)I'll prob try it out at some point, and abandon ship of I don't like it!
I think NA is mostly categorized by the age of the characters. If they're college students it's a NA instead of YA.But Mrs.J is right - from my experience it's just an excuse to have sexual content in a YA book.
Which makes me feel kind of dirty being in my 30s and reading about children (from my POV) getting it on. I don't mind some sexual content but I've read some things that even make me uncomfortable reading - and I read adult romance and erotica.
Luke wrote: "Hm, it makes me wonder where the line should be for sex in non-romance, non-erotic fiction."It's not quite the same. Most of the sex in these books are pretty graphic.

ROFL!!
That one actually made me laugh out loud! :D

Oh no. You did not just do that...
I'm working all night and now I will probably have that song on my brain...
I will probably go completely nuts at the end of it... O.o
