I've just show the youtube video to my friend, who had no idea what I was talking about when I told her about this little chat. So obviously I had to share the... joy?
My stomach now hurts so bad from laughing at her reaction :D

lol!!!
I posted a blog post!!!signs
It has nothing to do about reading or books, but it's probably been two years since I made a blog post.
@Homeinmyshoes - your blog post made me think of this sign we have where I'm from:
Look out for trolls :)
Nerdiest states in the USA: http://io9.com/what-are-the-nerdiest-...Georgia's in Nerd Hell. No wonder I feel alone in my nerdiness sometimes.

Well, it doesn't help that nerds tend to be more prevelant in higher population areas. I'm in IN, the 11th highest ranking and my city of blue collar factory workers and redneck farmers is almost completely devoid of nerds.
My state is "few nerds" but I'm guessing my city would be higher than that. There's quite a few of us here. And it's gotten better since I was in school. I was always the only girl reading Dragonlance - until I got my friends reading it anyway.
Well, Mark Lawrence is in the very beginning stages of talking with Wolfgang Hammer, the guy who developed House of Cards and Orange is the New Black about turning Prince of Thorns into a TV show.
Okay. I'm curious. Does anyone belong to a book club that meets in real life? At the library today I noticed a flyer that they host a science fiction-fantasy book club once a month. I've been thinking I *do* need to get out more and do things on my own (meaning without family). But I also have this horrible image of the "club" being 2-3 guys and being horribly uncomfortable. Should I? Shouldn't I? Should I ask someone at the library about it?

But it was a personal book club, not one with the library.
I planned to start another one here but MeetUp costs real money:
$12 a month for 6 months (a single $72 charge)
$15 a month for 3 months (a single $45 charge)
$19 per month

I've been think..."In the past month I've joined 2 book clubs and a food club in an effort to be more social. So far, it's worked out pretty well for me. One book club is through the library. The group reads classic YA books. It will go until July or August. The group is mainly older woman, but there is a younger girl that comes...she's very shy and quiet though. Most of the women are librarians or have some association with the library (ex. Friends of the Library).
When I checked out the book my name was the only one on the list! So I was really apprehensive going to the my first club meeting thinking it was going to be only me and a librarian. But, turned out most of them already had copies so I was the only one actually checking out the book. lol. Anyway, I've been to 2 discussions and so far it's been fun. Snacks + intellectual convo = great night! ....for me at least. ;)
I also joined another one that meets at a local indie bookshop. In that group there is a girl about my age, but mostly it's a mid to older crowd. I've only been to one discussion, but everyone was really nice and welcoming. According to the bookshop owner the group reads a bit of every genre. The bookshop owner took a shine to me and ended up inviting me as a guest to the food club, which also meets at the shop. That was a lot of fun too. Members get assigned a course and have to bring a dish that fits with the month's theme. The one I went too was a cheese theme. It's unbelievable the foods that have cheese in them! I came out of there 3 lbs heavier. hehe.
Anyway, I say expand your horizons and try it out. If you don't like it you don't have to join up. :)
I'm leaning towards it...Actually I found that my library started a group here that didn't really get anywhere. I left a greeting even though it hasn't had any activity for just over a year. Who knows? Maybe someone will answer. Lol.
My library has a book club, although based on the book list I'd just be sitting there complaining the whole time. Contemporary fiction + me = booooooooooored. Most of the time, anyway.
I keep checking though, I love the idea! Eventually I hope to see a book I'm actually interested in (and then steal that group of people and form our own underground super fun and elite SFF club!)

Yeah, my library has a GR group too but it's just sitting there collecting virtual dust bunnies.
I haven't been able to find a SFF group in my area. Mostly all the groups are non-fiction or contemporary fiction. I don't mind contemporary fiction though. I read a bit of every thing anyway. If I want to get genre specific I just use GR.
I could probably go troll my local Magic the Gathering stores and see if I could get enough for a SF&F book club, but I don't speak that dialect of nerd.
I read contemporary fiction and I've actually been reading more of it lately. With everything going on lately I just don't have the attention for long fantasy series right now. I do prefer fiction with a touch of fantasy and/or romance though. And even though it's not really my thing I would be open to joining a romance group.
I'm going to look into it.

It's sad though. We have Magic the Gathering nerds in great abundance in my town, but we seriously lack in almost every other regard. Very few read fantasy, and even fewer play Warhammer 40k :(

I saw a WoW group on MeeetUp but I don't play WoW. It's actually a game I should love - it's made by Blizzard - but I'm not paying a monthly fee to play a damn game.
I've thought about it, but never joined. I have the "you people read crap books" problem that has been mentioned. One at work is outta the question, for similar reasons.
Of course, even if I found an SFF one I probably wouldn't like half the books they picked, as I'm sure they'd tend to do the usual suspects...

Have you tried StarCraft?
I haven't played Starcraft yet. I haven't had a good enough computer to handle most games for a while. Plus, with the amount I read these days, my game time has lessened considerably. But my interests are cyclical, so by this time next year I might play more than I read. Hopefully not though.

I actually run my computers into the ground in order to save up enough to buy a new one with a decent graphics card and processor.

LOL!!
Told you.
I play astroempires.com now. It's kinda a simplistic version of EVE based on spreadsheets instead of graphics. It's very strategy and social based. It's great for political intrigue since everything is player driven so if you wake up and feel like backstabbing a guy you've played with for 4 years, you can go right ahead and do it.

They post the books and you sign up if you are interested and then we meet at restaurants around the valley and discuss. They only recently started doing fantasy and horror! I'm thinking of heading up a Dark Tower one. I'm nervous though.
As for dudes being the only ones, in my experience that is opposite. I signed up for the book club to meet guys and there are maybe 3. The rest are woman. Apparently guys who read are rare and guys who read and like to discuss are very rare.
And WoW is totally worth the $15 a month...if you have time for it, which I don't anymore. I miss it so much though.

Homeinmyshoes wrote: "We's exists. We swears it." I know you're out there. I finally snagged myself one...but it took 30 years!
Felina wrote: "And my Meetup group only charges $2 per club you attend."Yeah, but organizers have to pay the higher fees. :(
Otherwise I'd start a bookclub here. Fantasy Only! All the bookclubs around here are boring.
Felina wrote: "I see. I guess the $2 we pay per meet up pays for that expense so our leaders don't have to."Probably.
And GR just isn't the place to start that kind of book club. :(
Oh, well.
