message 953: by Isa (new)

Isa Hi everybody! New to the group but eager to get started! I'm in a bit of a transitioning period in terms of reading interests, as I started university this year and am definitely not a Young Adult anymore. I'm always open for new reading suggestions and looking to broaden my horizons!

I like historical fiction, classics, epic fantasies and to a lesser degree contemporaries. Some of my favorite books include The Book Thief, 1984, A Song Of Ice and Fire, Emma and To Kill A Mockingbird.

message 954: by Heather (new)

Heather (lynn6) Hi, I'm Heather. I enjoy a variety of genres. My favorite author is Harlan Coben, my favorite book is The Stand by Stephen King, and I've recently been reading a lot of YA.

message 955: by Madalena (new)

Madalena (maddalenad) | 30 comments Hi everyone! My name is Madalena and I am from Greece. I am an 18 year old English literature student. I read books both in Greek and in English, but mostly in English these days. I love fantasy, classics, dystopian, historical novels and some contemporary. Recently I have started reading some poetry too. I have a huge to read list, so I am not sure if I will participate in group challenges, but I will definitely try! In any case I' m excited to be a member of the group and I would love to discuss with you about the books we read.

message 956: by Maria (last edited Dec 28, 2014 11:39AM) (new)

Maria (mariah90602) | 2287 comments Welcome everybody. I'm fairly new to the group too. I already started getting some new ideas of what to read. I tend to stay in my comfort zone. Incidentally Isa, some of your favorite books are some of mine. I didn't think I liked Young Adult books, I am no longer a young adult. I just turned 40 this year for heaven's sake. I started reading some lately and some of them are really good. So you never know!

Cassandra | 5832 comments Welcome, everyone! Thank you for introducing yourselves and I look forward to getting to know you all this year. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions!

message 958: by vane (new)

vane (vanegilbert) Hello everyone, my name is Vanessa Gilbert, I'm 16 years old and i'm a high school senior student. I read everything that catches my eyes, but mostly I go after romantic, YA and fantasy books. I'm looking forward to meet new people here in order to share my love for books as most of my friends don't read as much as I do, and it's kinda complicated talking to them of most of what i read.
sorry if I've misspelled anything but I'm from Dominican Republic and we speak Spanish and I don't have a lot of practice in speaking English. thank you.

message 959: by Bookwench69 (new)

Bookwench69 | 16 comments Hi. My name is bookwench, aka, Lindsay and I am new to the group. I like to read a mishmash of different styles and authors, anything that catches my fancy, (anything from odd to 'palette cleansers') I work in a small, indie bookstore, so it's not that difficult to find the eclectic and the ordinary. Looking forward to chatting about books!

message 960: by Mari (new)

Mari Säisä (seregi) Hi, I'm Mari and I'm a bibliophile. I'm looking for new reading challenges!

message 961: by James (last edited Dec 28, 2014 10:29PM) (new)

James (james18) Hello

I just joined Goodreads a few months ago and think it is great to tract what I read or listen too.

I am James and I live in Reno, NV now. I work for a local college teaching radiology students. I enjoy listening to audiobooks, mostly true, real life, or biography types.

I am also a cyclist and do lots of listening as I ride. I also swim, lift weights and play tennis.

Getting my list of the A-Z challenge ready and plan to participate with that. Hope to add some of you as friends so I can follow what you have read and/or listen too.

message 963: by Santina (new)

Santina Hi my name is Santina. I love to read and like to read all genres. I often find myself reading more than one book at a time. Life is too short to read just one book at a time!

message 964: by Artemio (new)

Artemio Romero Macías | 1 comments Hey, I am Artemio. I am 27 and love to read anything, actually a prefer epic fantasy novels (Tolkien, Dragonlance, Discworld, etc), but I have read so much that I am kinda sick of that and I am trying to read different thing now, currently I am reading the Robots saga of Asimov Caves of Steel. Nice meeting you all.

message 965: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyferrell) | 38 comments Hello! I'm new to the group! I'm a mom to an 8 year old daughter and haven't found much time to read lately. I used to be in two book clubs, which kept me on track. I'm starting with a goal of 1 book per month (hopefully that will lead to more) so that I'll keep reading all year long. I love many different genres, but especially enjoy books with strong heroines. Happy New Year!

message 966: by Ammie (new)

Ammie (ambir775) | 2 comments Hi All! I am 35 years old, I love to read and have found many book clubs don't end up discussing the book. I am hoping by joining an online book club, only the ones who have read the book will comment. I am hoping to broaden my perspective and interpretation of my surroundings by listening to others input. Happy New Year!

message 967: by Dana (new)

Dana (danalibrariana) | 42 comments Hi all,

My name is Dana. This is my first experience with a book club or a reading challenge. I'm looking forward to both! I wish you all a very happy New Year! :)

message 968: by Alta (new)

Alta | 145 comments Hello all...

My name is Alta and I consider myself an avid reader, but I've fallen off the wagon a bit this year after returning to school. I'm hoping that joining this group and participating in a reading challenge will help motivate me to read more when I'm not working or studying rather than waste precious hours on social media. I will be turning 35 this year so thought that was a fair number to set as my reading goal. Wishing everyone happy reading in 2015!

message 969: by Jennie (new)

Jennie Randolph | 2 comments Hi!

My name is Jennie. I'm 42, married, and mom to 13 and 9-year-old boys. I currently work as a school librarian, but am considering going back to the classroom to teach special education. I'm a lifelong avid reader, but find that the chaos and busyness of life with kids keeps me from the social part of reading that I love. This sounds like a great group, and I'm really looking forward to getting to know everyone!

message 970: by Lorina (new)

Lorina | 59 comments Hello everyone! I'm Lorina. My taste in books varies pretty drastically, though I tend to prefer fiction over non-fiction. My favorites include Pride & Prejudice, Jane Eyre, the Hobbit, and the Harry Potter series. I am partial to historical fiction as well!

message 971: by Ray (new)

Ray | 2 comments Hello all. I am Ray and am a Physics prof and researcher. I try to read as much as possible but sometimes get bogged down in real life. I particularly enjoy non-fiction books (Science and Biographies primarily) but do like some fiction. Mostly classics (Russian especially) and anything Thomas Pynchon and David Foster Wallace!

message 972: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Buell I'm Wendy, 48, life long New Yorker who gave up NYC 13 years back when a better job and a much lower cost of living led me up the river to Albany. The kids are grown and the job is kind of dull so I should have plenty of time to read, but life threw me some unpleasant curves the last couple years Fortunately things have kind of leveled out now and the last few weeks I've been trying to get back to me, which includes my formerly voracious appetite for reading. I'm hoping to challenge myself a little to move back towards my old one book a week lifetime norm. The last couple years I have been mostly doing audio books and been sucking up my guilty pleasure cozy mystery and amusing paranormal series. (well they amuse me) But I find myself delving back into non-fiction again and into fiction that requires a little more of my investment in the plot line.
Hoping to find some interesting ideas for reads in this group, and to share thoughts on common reads. I welcome a virtual poke or 3 from anyone who wishes to remind me I'm not sharing along the way.

Tytti | 58 comments Ray wrote: "I am Ray and am a Physics prof and researcher."

I wonder how you would like The Quantum Thief, the author has a PhD in Mathematical Physics. (It's scifi, though.) You would probably understand a lot more of it than the rest of us... :D

Tytti | 58 comments Silja wrote: "Hi everyone! I'm Silja and I'm from Switzerland."

If you ever need a book that has your name in it, then there is The Maid Silja: The History of the Last Offshoot of an Old Family Tree, it's maybe the best novel of a Nobel Laureaute.

message 975: by Books and the Bru (new)

Books and the Bru (booksandthebru) Hy guys, I'm Bruna from Brazil.
I'm really excited to join this group and to be able to participate in some of the challenges. I read a bi of everything, though lately I've been reading a lot of romances. I'm also crazy about mangas and comic books. Hopefully we can have fun together.

message 976: by Cat (new)

Cat Lee | 24 comments Hi, I'm Cat, 27, live in Stockport (UK) total book addict but easily distracted so I'm going to do the 2015 genre challenge to help focus me.

Mum and I can't go near a bookstore or second hand bookshop without buying several books (I really don't get on with E-readers), consequently I have SO MANY BOOKS that I just haven't got round to reading yet. I have no specific genre, I'm happy to read anything with a story line that interests me (I have the same views about movies and music really) although I do love Stephen King (who really should be a genre category all of his own) young adult and sci-fi/fantasy but not too technical/in depth as I get a bit lost.

I love theatre (I have a Phantom of the Opera tattoo), movies, photography, cats (own 2), and ferrets (own 4).

Rachel Inbar (rachelinbar) Hi, I'm Rachel. Originally from the US, but living in Israel for nearly 30 years. I'm a mom of 6, aged 6-21. I had several years during which I barely read at all, but the last few years have been pretty good. I particularly enjoy historical fiction and stay away from fantasy... I also enjoy teen fiction, dystopias & thrillers. I love books that I can't put down, but have a hard time starting a new book, for fear that it will disappoint me.

message 980: by Meagan (new)

Meagan Hello! I'm Meagan, I'm 17 and was born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada. I've always remember reading ever since a very young age but it wasn't until a few years ago that I really started to enjoy it. My favorite genre is probably young adult contemporary or fantasy/dystopian, but I really enjoy to read just about anything. I love a good challenge and this group seemed like a perfect fit for me. Can't wait to read with you all! :)

message 981: by Kanako (new)

Kanako (kanakotone) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Kanako. I used to read a lot when I was a kid, but I stopped sometime during high school. I need to bring back my good habit. I love to read mostly business books.

message 982: by Anna (new)

Anna (abunchofbanana) | 17 comments Hi everyone! I'm Anna, and I'm 22 years old. I'm really excited to be a part of this group and to challenge myself to read more this year. I'm a huge fan of YA Lit. It's what I love to read, and it's what I love to write. I do read other genres on occasion, but I am forever a YA girl. But I'm hoping to step out of my comfort zone and read more nonfiction and classics in 2015. I love giving and getting book suggestions, so if you want to recommend a book to me or want my opinion on a book, that would be really awesome. Can't wait to get to know more about you all!

Kirsty Hobbit | 3 comments Hi all. I'm Kirsty, 30 years old and have an almost 3 year old little girl who I've blamed for me not reading for 3 years. Time to change.

Where's the cheapest place to purchase eBooks, as money apparently hates me at the minute.

Thank you :)

Amazon has some decent deals sometimes, but I recommend signing up for bookbub.com because they send you a daily e-mail with deals on extremely cheap and sometimes free eBooks according to the preferences you give them. I've found a few books that sounded really interesting to me through them, and I don't think I've ever paid more than $3 that way. You can also search "free books" in the store on your Kindle (if that's what you're using), and it'll bring up a huge selection of free titles. Those books are usually a hit or miss, but it's definitely worth looking through. I found a few good short story collections that way and a couple novels I plan on reading eventually. Amazon also has a lot of classics for free. I got things like Peter Pan, Les Miserables, and the Wizard of Oz for nothing that way.

You can get free books on kindle

message 987: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Medved (jessreads101) | 2 comments Hello everyone!
My name is Jessica.

I have a booktube channel where I do reviews, hauls, and tags ---JessReads! - that is actually what brought me to GoodReads.

Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIWk...

My absolute favorite genre is historical fiction, although I am finding a big love for supernatural books! Who would have thought?!?! Certainly not me. My first experience with supernatural was Breaking Dawn, (which no hate if you loved, we all have our own tastes) but I was so NOT in love! But this past year I started to read the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs and I am in LOVE! If there are any supernatural suggestions you have please let me know!

I am excited to be more involved in a community where talking about books and reading is embraced and people don't look at you with a furrowed brow because you get SUPER EXCITED about characters in books - really it is just like getting excited about characters on T.V. except you can't see them, just means I have a better imagination! Right? RIGHT?!?!

message 988: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, I'm Sue, I'm 51 and have 3 grown up children and 2 grandchildren. I live in Lincoln, UK. I love books and read most genres. I particularly like historical, real life, romance and classical literature. I am looking forward to trying some of the challenges on here.

Manish Sinha (manishsinhav) | 8 comments Hello, I am Manish, 26 and live in Boston. I mostly love reading scifi, medicine, general science, philosophy, skepticism, dystopia and post-apocalyptic books.

I started reading books in 2012 after not reading any for 10 years. I am aiming for 52 books in 2015. Wish me luck.

Tytti | 58 comments Silja wrote: "Thanks! I didn't knew there was any book with my name in it... And it sounds really interesting!"

Is it a common name in Switzerland? Btw, it has been translated to German (and 26 other languages) and sold well there at the time, so you might find it somewhere. It's a very Finnish book about the countryside, and the nature is important like in all of his books, more or less. There are also some similarities with the author's own life and especially with a woman's he knew (also named Silja).

message 993: by Tytti (last edited Dec 31, 2014 07:28AM) (new)

Tytti | 58 comments I'm not sure it's exactly Scandinavian, I don't think it's that common in Sweden and in Norway there's Silje. It seems to be more Finnish and Estonian (and Frisian?). I can easily understand why Finns would start calling Cecilia (it comes from that) "Silja", a bit like Russian Tatyana becomes Tanya (Tanja).

There's also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silja_Line :D

message 994: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 9 comments Hi, I'm Rebecca! I want to read 100 books in 2015. That means I will probably count any books I read, no matter how short. I haven't quite figured out a system for comics: I'm thinking 10 issues or 1 collection will count as a book.

Suzanne (nordlys) Hello all, I'm Suzanne. I read widely, but I especially like to read historical fiction, which I am also trying my hand at writing. I am taking a deep breath and challenging myself to read more books, and to keep track of them in 2015. Exciting!

Georgie (livininafantasy) | 2 comments Hi! I'm Georgie, I'm 17 and I loooove reading! I'll read pretty much anything, usually dark romance and sic-fi but I'm just getting into contemporary reads. I'm so excited to start the 2015 challenge!
