I have actually read it before, many years ago and it was very interesting, from memory it was written just as the HMO's were becoming very powerful in the US, so I thought it would be interesting to reread and see just how accurate he was.

Michele Jennie, I have just started reading it and boy do I have a bad memory..lol nothing to do with HMO's all about drug companies wanting to sell medicine to healthy people by having them think they are sick. It was written in 2005 and is an Australian book.

Bette, I just LOVED your review! Wow, leave it to humankind to invent something like the 'iron muzzle' - and we think we are the most evolved species on Earth ... Anyway, I have been wanting for a while now to read this book, and even though your review alerted me to how confronting it must be, I want to read it even more since I saw your review, thank you. Now I know where my hoped-for birthday book voucher will be spent :-)

I'm currently reading Burial Rites and even though I'm only 18% in, I can absolutely see what all the buzz has been about. I believe Hannah Kent is going to be a superstar. Having read a lot of reviews of the book beforehand, I was prepared for it to be a fairly bleak and slow-paced read, which it is, but I DONT CARE, because the writing is so exquisite. Even though it is hovering around 40C here, I can feel the chill wind on my face and the brambles catching on my skirt, I can smell the dried animal dung on the fire and the goat's-milk cheese - and I can see the distant figure of a solitary woman still sitting on her horse because she has been tethered to the saddle by her captors. Agnes Magnusdottir is already haunting me.

When you have the drop down box under your books, there is a shelf called "favorites" (Yanky spelling!) among the "want to read", "read" etc... just click on that and it'll make your shelf for you:)

message 7466: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Actually, I went to edit shelves and it tells you how to feature one shelf at the top, which was what I noticed other people had, so thanks, I appreciate the quick help, Brenda, and in the meantime I figured it out. And Hey, my favourites shelf has Aussie spelling!!!

I'm reading this at the moment as well, Sally! I must be almost at the same point as you - just slightly further on than this - Agnes has just spent her first night at the farm. Except I'm listening to it as a book I downloaded from my library's Bolinda audio website - I've never done that before - it's certainly very convenient!

Listening to it is a strange experience with all the strange people and place names which I have no idea how to spell! But as you say, the writing is beautiful and I'm looking forward to the next time I listen to find out what happens next!

Funnily enough, as I'm reading the book, I'm always stopping at place names to try to sound them out in my head, LOL! I think one tip I can offer is that they seem to use more consonants and less vowels than we do in English - strings of four consonants (especially including letters like F, N and V) all together in the middle of a word seem not uncommon. Luckily, I am the kind of person who quite likes puzzling over the pronunciation of words in different languages.

On the subject of 'favourites' shelves on Goodreads, is there any way to change the spelling of one's existing 'favorites' shelf? I have a cordial dislike of American spelling being forced upon me, I'm strange like that!

message 7470: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 79994 comments Mod
I don't know - unless you make your own shelf (where it says "add another shelf"), and take your books off their favorites one and put them onto your favourites one:) That's the only way I can think of to change it...

Jennie The Luminaries is a massive, slow read but well worth persevering with. I actually didn't really get into it until about 300 or so pages in but then I couldn't put it down and it all came together really well. Hope you enjoy it.

Because I didn't have a favourites shelf and was trying to make one, that was what I did, then made that shelf the feature shelf so it sits at the top on its own. But if you already have lots of books on your favorites shelf that might be a bit of a chore

When I was reading Instructions for a Heatwave by Maggie O'Farrell one of the characters is Aoife, and before I got very far at all, I needed to look up the pronunciation on the net so I was saying it right in my head, LOL! I just couldn't stand the idea I would be saying it wrong for the whole novel. These Celtic names..... it is pronounced EEFA, you'd never guess, would you! Of course, if I had been listening to an audiobook, I wouldn't have had that problem, but might not have recognised Aoife when I saw it in print as the same thing.

Diane | 14 comments I am reading a book on Seurat, the artist,
from Thames and Hudson. It is a bit dry. He was
very secretive and apparently it was only after
his death that even his close friends realised
he had a mistress and a little son. Weirdly, a
few months ago I read a book on Friedrich, a
landscapist, and he also had a very monotonous life.
