What Are You Currently Reading? (doesn't have to be an Aussie book)

As someone in The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society said, "Reading good books ruins you for enjoying bad books"!!

Yes I remember that quote quite clearly Kathryn and it's spot on!!! :)

I have Norwegian by Night here from my library, which I haven't started yet:)

Phrynne it isn't great that's for sure, which is unfortunate because the author is lovely and you kind of want her to be successful as she is an Aussie. Although I'm sure there would be an audience for this kind of novel. Yes I think Bette's review is pretty spot on. I might persevere with it though and read it when I can't be bothered concentrating.

Mine is a library copy too Brenda and I've just realised I have to return it on Friday as it has a reserve on it. It's pretty good so far and I remember reading a really good review about it...I think it was by Marianne.
Yes Marianne recommended it to me too:) Mine is due back 7th February, but at this stage I'm able to renew it, so I'm safe for awhile:)

There is certainly an audience for her novel. Many people are giving it five stars! I just know it is not for me! :)

Snap! I, too, have Norwegian by Night borrowed from the library and my next-up book:)

Well, as I recommended this one to all of you, I do hope you all enjoy it as much as I did!

Well all I can say Marianne is so far so good. I stayed up till 1.30 last night reading it. It was hard to put down. I'm working today and the rest of the week so reading time will be curtailed but somehow I think I'll manage to fit in some reading.

Wow there are a few of us to read this one! All thanks to Marianne I think:)

I finished it, but it was a struggle. Could not see that winning Miles Franklin over

I liked the Hobbit, I cannot stand the Lord of the Rings trilogy though. Hobbit was ostensibly a kid's novel, so Tolkien laid off on the descripty, but LOTR drags for so long. I wanted to kill myself.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Tolkien wasn't a very good writer.

Just love a good crime story! This one's set in Russia
From the back cover:
In his ground-breaking Gorky Park, Martin Cruz Smith created one of the iconic inverstigators of contemporary fiction, Arkady Renko. In Tatiana, Smith delivers his most ambitious and politically daring novel to date.

Agree with both Brenda and Marianne on this.
Finished earlier today Dying For A Chance by Amy H. Allworden I just picked it off my kindle at random as a "waiting room read", and it's delightful!

You need to read it yourself Angela. Many people love LOTR, me included. As with any book it is a personal thing.

I am with you Liam, I could not get into it and I hated the movies, never bothered to see the third one after I spent most of my time looking at my watch during the 2nd wondering when it was ever going to end...lol

I've started The Weekend by Peter Cameron and Norwegian by Night by Derek B. Miller.

I guess one person's 'not very good writer' is another 100 million or so people's 'genius'. After it was first published in 1954, it was the second highest selling book in history, certainly up until 2007 and possibly to this day (I have heard rumours about Harry Potter and/or the Twilight books having broken that record, but I'm not at all sure they are true). It has also been voted 'the nation's favourite book' in the UK, Germany and Australia, and was voted 'the book of the millennium' by Amazon.com customers in 1999. So while it would certainly be a dull world if we all agreed on everything, I think it's fairly safe to say that Tolkien must have been doing something right ... ;-)

And what other author has ever made Orlando Bloom wear pointy ears and a pony tail to such incredible effect?

Loving the African setting as something different for me.

It's set in the late 1980s and about a teenage girl whose uncle dies of HIV/AIDS. After her uncle's death she discovers for the first time that he's had a partner for many years that she's never known about and gradually they start to develop an unconventional friendship.

I looked up The Perfect Location and just the names of the three heroines would put me off completely. If that was not enough Bette's review would do it!
